This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL was initially sold and registered in Michigan where it remained with the first owners until 2024 when the current owner and seller acquired the car. This W126 is finished in Midnight Blue over Beige Leather (265) and powered by a 4.2-liter M116 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Features include heated electrically-adjustable front seats, a sunroof, automatic climate control, an aftermarket head unit, disc brakes, and 15″ wheels. Complete service documentation accompanies the car and a seller-made spreadsheet organizes every service by line. During Fall 2024, under the current owner's care, about $6,000 was spent on services including an A/C service, replacing the fuel pump, and a front suspension refresh by way of new tie rod assemblies, new lower ball joints, new bushings, and a center drag link. Now showing 124k miles, this 420SEL is offered for sale by the current owner with service records, the original window sticker, an original first aid kit, a factory tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Michigan title.
This 420SEL, while originally finished in Signal Red (568) from the factory, received a repaint in Midnight Blue under the first owner’s care. The repaint was commissioned as a result of the car getting keyed. It’s now painted in Midnight Blue with the same gray lower cladding shown. Exterior features include headlamp wipers, a power antenna, a power rear view mirror, and a power sunroof. The seller reports slight corrosion on the corners of the front bumper chrome caps. New caps will be included in the sale. Photos showing exterior paint and trim condition are viewable in the gallery.
Silver 15″ Gullideckel wheels are mounted with a new set of 205/65 Toyo tires showing 2024 date codes. Stopping power is provided by disc brakes stationed at all four corners. A full size spare and factory tool kit are included in the trunk.
The cabin is upholstered in Beige Leather (265) with matching carpets and door panels while Zebrano wood trim adorns the dash, center console, and door cards. Amenities include power-adjustable heated front seats with position memory, automatic climate control, cruise control, an analog clock, power accessories, and the optional sunshade. The sunshade is reportedly inoperable. The A/C received a recent service.
A four-spoke airbag steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline. Additional gauges provide readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and instant economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 124k miles, 2k of which have been added by the seller.
The 4.2-liter M116 V8 was factory-rated for 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque when new. It sends power to the rear wheels via a 722.3 4-speed automatic.
The included Carfax report shows a clean history and linear mileage updates. This 420SEL is offered for sale by the current owner with service records, the original window sticker, an original first aid kit, a factory tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Michigan title.

@Eurocayman Thanks for your inquiry - I do not know and haven't experienced any issues with the engine while driving. As I noted in other comments, soon after purchase I provided it to our German car specialty mechanic shop for a sort-out inspection and I did not receive any comments about idle speed. Thanks.

@Seller do you know why it idles so high even when the engine is warmed up? 1100 rpm idle seems very high.

Correct, the rear window sunshade does not work. I did not do any timing system work and all invoices I received from the original owner are entered on my spreadsheet. All power windows and central vacuum locks operate.
@rezwiththebenz while not speaking on behalf of the seller, I already asked that question and he already responded. Based on the invoices, he has "no knowledge of any prior timing system repairs"

I also want to chime in, and of the major timing components done?
Thank you for your compliments. The octogenarian original owner (who bought it for his wife) apologized that the sunshade no longer worked. I have not attempted to sort through that. All other power accessories work including the antenna; I purchased and installed a new rubber grommet at the antenna base. You will see screw holes on the driver door card where an aftermarket cup holder was mounted but the aged plastic crumbled. The passenger door cupholder still is there. As for service I abstracted all the invoices I received from the original owner into the spread sheet, I have no knowledge of any prior timing system repairs.
very nice looking 420SEL, repainted in Midnight blue, which is such a classic Mercedes paint color. Interestingly optioned with front heated seats and power rear sunshade. I gotta ask, does that rear sunshade work? there were no photos of it in the up position, and I understand they are notoriously unreliable. Can you indicate anything that is NOT working (sunroof including pop-up feature, central lock from both front doors and trunk lock, power windows including the rear windows)? Also, reading through the extensive maintenance I don't see that the timing chain/guides/rails have ever been replaced (I ask because they are time-sensitive bits, not necessarily based on miles).
