This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC 5.0 is an Italian-market example that was imported and federalized to the U.S. and is 1 of only 1,636 units built. The 5.0L SLC is a homologation special to qualify the SLC for the World Rally Championship. Power comes from an aluminum block 5.0-liter M117 V8 linked with a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Brilliant Red Metallic (525) over Beige Velour (905), features include 14″ Bundt alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, fog lights, rear seats, automatic climate control, manual wind windows, and a Blaupunkt stereo. The most recent service in July 2026 included an oil change, new fuel lines, plug wires, cap and rotor, muffler repair, and an AC conversion to R134. This 450SLC 5.0 shows 138,841 miles and is now offered by the selling dealer in New Jersey with a clean New Jersey title.

This homologation special is finished in Brilliant Red Metallic (525) and features an alloy hood. It is also equipped with factory Euro-spec headlights, fog lights, a factory sunroof-delete, dual side mirrors, a power antenna, Euro-spec chrome bumpers, and polished aluminum trim. The selling dealer notes the antenna is currently inoperative. The car was optioned with the black trunk lid spoiler and debadged from the factory. The seller reports no signs of rust on the body.

The original 14″ Bundt alloy wheels are mounted with GoodYear Vector tires measuring 205/70 on all four corners. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with ABS.

The interior is finished in Beige Velour (905) with a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, and doors. Amenities include front seat headrests, front seat armrests, automatic climate control, a Blaupunkt stereo, central power locks, and manual wind windows. The seller notes some cracking visible in the wood veneer on the center console. The AC was recently serviced and converted to R134.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a federalized 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer, analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel economy, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 138,821 miles and total mileage is unknown due to the cluster swap during federalization. The seller reports the mileage reading was equal to the kilometers shown at the time of import.

The Euro-spec 5.0-liter M117 V8 was rated at 240 horsepower and 297 lb-ft of torque, and features and all aluminum block and Bosch fuel injection. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. The most recent service in July 2026 included an oil change, new fuel lines, plug wires, cap and rotor, muffler repair, and an AC conversion to R134.

There is no Carfax report available due to the early year model. The owner states there were prior service records with the car but they have since been misplaced. The car will come with a clean New Jersey title.

The MB Market Insights

As Mercedes-Benz aimed to reintroduce themselves into the world of rally racing, the SLC was hand-picked as the perfect platform with superb handling and a fixed roof providing added body rigidity to the SL. The only piece missing from the formula was more power. With that in mind, Mercedes introduced the 450SLC 5.0 as a homologation special model which beefed up the M117. The debut event for the SLC rally car was the month-long 30,000 km 1978 Vuelta America del Sud (Tour of South America) which was known as one of the most grueling rallies. Only about 1/3 of all the entered cars survived and finishing 1st, 2nd, and 4th was the 5.0 SLC, and, for what it's worth, 3rd place was also a Mercedes. The 450SLC 5.0 is the original homologation model SLC packed with a 5.0L under the hood in order to continue their dominance in rally racing. Today, finding a rust-free 5.0L SLC has become shockingly difficult. This stunning red over beige example has strong curb appeal and retains nearly all of its originality. The unrestricted Euro M117 is a night and day difference over the muted U.S. versions. For true classic touring, you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler model to do it in. We wouldn't be surprised if the next owner adds some rally lights and finds the nearest dirt road.
