This 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220 “Fintail” 4-Speed Sedan was originally sold by Boozer Motor Company in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for $4,472.01 retail. It’s a 3-owner example with the current owner and seller acquiring the car in 2022. Upon receiving the car, the owner decided to invest just over $46k into a mechanical refurbishment to ensure this example was performing as the factory intended. Records from Pierre Hedary and Jamie Kopchinski are included in the sale and outline recent work. Records since new are included in the sale from all three owners along with OEM workshop manuals. This Fintail is finished in Moss Green (DB226) over Creme Beige Leather power is provided by a 2.2L M180 inline-6 paired to a 4-speed column-shift manual transmission. The most recent service, performed by Jaime Kopchinski’s Classic Workshop LLC, shows a $14k total with records available in the gallery. More than 100 pages of records accompany the car documenting the car’s life from the first sale. This Fintail sedan is offered for sale by the current owner with complete documentation for the car, workshop manuals, some spare parts, the factory jack, factory literature, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.
The body, as indicated on the original window sticker, was originally finished in Moss Green (DB226) and was refinished under prior ownership. Exterior features include optional rear bumper guards, complete brightwork, a driver side rear view mirror, stacked OEM headlamps, and factory “220” decklid badging. The chrome brightwork across the body of the car is noted to be in great condition with no pitting shown. The front grill is topped with the original hood ornament with the plastic mesh showing no holes and the thin chrome inlays have no bends.
The 13” steel wheels sport polished covers including color-matched Moss Green hubcaps. Maxxis Whitewall tires are mounted and measure 185/80 at all four corners. Braking is handled by drums behind each wheel and all four shocks were replaced in 2022 prior to the current owner’s acquisition.
The cabin is adorned in Creme Beige Leather across the seats with matching door cards and carpets. Natural Herringbone CocoMats adorn each footwell and show well. Crank windows are shown with all the OEM cranks present, and the corner windows are manually operated by knurled plastic knobs below to direct outside airflow onto the occupants. The walnut dashboard shows no signs of chipping or delamination and the dashboard wood appears to be in great condition. FrigiKing air conditioning is featured and operates as intended with controls mounted below the dashboard. A linear tachometer has been installed in the radio filler plate. The levers for the heat and fresh air in the center of the dash are all intact.
Original VDO instrumentation is encased in a rectangular piece of glass framed behind the large black Bakelite steering wheel and U-shaped polished metal horn ring. Featured in the instrumentation is an aviation design inspired speedometer that tops out at 100-mph, fuel gauge, temperature in Fahrenheit, and oil pressure. Attached to the steering column is a four-speed shift lever for the manual transmission. The analogue odometer reads 89k miles (TMU).
The 2.2 liter M180 inline-6 engine features dual carburetors and was factory rated for 94 horsepower and 124 lb-ft of torque when new. Thank you to all bidders today. High bid was just not close enough to reserve, even though I dropped reserve $4,000 at the end. Thank to MB Market for the auction.
I have lowered reserve to try my best to get this lovely car to a new owner today.

I've been staring at this Fintail for the last week and have not been able to get the color out of my head. I went to check out the 600 project car that's listed as well and realized it was originally painted this SAME color! At this point I'm just absolutely in love with the details here. @mrindler thanks for being a good steward!

Car was shipped via transporter when moved from Florida to my home in Maine. It has been driven around Maine for the past year. Everything on the 220b works!
Was the car driven back and forth from Maine to Florida?
Thank you for the kind words. This is a truly remarkable car, and the Moss Green color is a wonderful vintage original color. MB Market believes three owners, but a thorough review of the hundreds of pages of documents which accompany the car would yield a definitive answer. The fortunate winner of this auction will be able to enjoy and drive this well sorted and beautiful vintage Mercedes.
What a stunning example. Documentation from new, $14K in recent service, operational A/C, wood trim in great shape, and a beautiful color. You can’t ask for much better than that. Do we know how many owners from new?
