The exterior is finished in Tobacco Brown (423) with chrome brightwork lining the front and rear bumpers, grille and window trim. Exterior equipment includes factory tinted glass with a heated rear window, a sliding steel sunroof and twin exhaust pipes at the rear. Chipped paint is visible on the rear driver-side wheel arch along with various rock chips and scratches with the seller reporting no signs of rust or damage. The car previously received a full respray in its original color under prior ownership.
The 14” steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps with paint-matched centers and are wrapped in a set of Nexen NPriz AHS tires which measure 195/75 and show 2022 date codes. The spare tire is mounted in the trunk along with the factory jack.
The cabin is upholstered in Cognac Leather with matching carpets and wood veneer which lines the dashboard. The wood trim appears in good condition with no signs of cracking. Interior appointments include manually-adjustable front bucket seats, power windows, central locking, climate control with factory air-conditioning and the original Becker Europa radio. The seller reports that the interior was previously refinished.
The two-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, an analog clock and a multi gauge showing fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The odometer is said to have stopped working under current ownership with approximately 46,100 miles currently on the car. 5k miles have been added by the current owner over the past two years.
This W108 is powered by a 4.5-liter M117 V8 which is factory rated for 182 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. Maintenance performed by the seller in December 2022 included an engine oil change, new spark plugs and a new alternator belt. Additional maintenance documents from Mercedes-Benz of Albuquerque are included with the car.
The car was purchased by the current owner in 2021 and subsequently titled under the owner’s dealership. This 1973 280SE 4.5 is now offered for sale by the current owner in Durango, Colorado with the original owner’s manual and a clean Colorado title.
It’s impossible for any enthusiast to hate a W108. An instant classic upon design and launch, the W108 set the tone for modern Mercedes and the next 40 years of innovation. As we’ve seen with previous examples, W108's touting the 4.5 V8 are more than capable of keeping pace with modern traffic while looking extraordinary in the process. With both the paint and interior having been previously redone, this example presents itself well and is sure to provide many more years of excellent motoring.

@gtmiller do you have any videos of a cold start and the vehicle out on a drive? Would help to see and hear how the car performs on the road. Thanks!
@MBlvr 73 MB Central lock system works but one rear door sluggish, AC works blows cold, Heater works great including slider controls, Interior/Exterior lighting works all great, Power windows work great, Radio comes on but no sound, antenna does not power up and down don’t know if it should. Clock and Odometer both have stopped since I bought it. I have not replaced frame/motor mounts or shocks do not know what previous owner did. It drove literally across the country with no issues and handles/ drives beautifully.
Nice car. Does the central locking work?, a/c (how cold)?, heater (how warm)?, lights, reading lights, power windows all 4, radio, windshield nozzle, radio and power antenna (if such) work? Have the subframe mounts, motor mounts, rear axle mounts, springs and shocks been changed? Anything that does not work, clock etc? Thank you.
@Lthomas yes, the car is fuel injected.
@Jcanabal the car drives very well with nothing strange coming from the suspension and the transmission shifts smoothly.
Is it fuel injection ?
Any comments on how dies it drives? (Shifting, suspension etc)

Whoever did the interior refit appears to have done an exemplary job of it. Cognac is a difficult leather to find, and this leather appears very close if not identical to what they had when new. Kudos to the trimmers who did this.
I love this car and wish I had room for it, both in my garage and bank account. Sigh.
@terry55 The interior fabrics were re-done before we purchased the car and it is now leather.
@Jim_Rosenthal The paint is the Tobacco Brown (dark brown) color and the interior was re-done before we purchased the car. It is now leather rather than the MB-tex that a lot of these cars came with. We have the service records from our ownership of the car but not from before.
We've adjusted the listing to show that the interior of this car has been recovered with leather. The interior is not the original MB-Tex.
Interesting and beautiful car. Paint reads as dark brown in some shots, black in others. So the interior is leather, not MBTex? Are there service records with the car? Thank you.
@gtmiller The seller ain the ccomments sectionstatesFinished in Tobacco Brown (423) over Cognac MB-Tex (140) end comments section states "wrapped in beautiful leather rather than MB-Tex". Under the first picture at the beginning of the advertisement states "Finished in Tobacco Brown (423) over Cognac MB-Tex (140)" In the comment section at the end of the advertisement the celler states "state say the celler states "wrapped n beautiful leather rather than the MB-Tex. What gives, which is correct. This makes me wonder what other information inaccurate. Not good for me to spend more than $10,000 dollars for a pig in a poke, so to speak.
The car's interior is wrapped beautiful leather rather than the MB-Tex
