Very glad to hear that- going through the air suspension is formidably expensive. They are really wonderful cars, AND in a sense the ancestors of the 500Es, I suppose the AMG cars as well.. a very honorable lineage of Percedes performance road cars.
Given the cost of a complete refurb of the air suspension system, I'd want to know how long it stays up and when it was last comprehensively gone through, if that info is available. It's a handsome car. The original radio is available as a rebuilt unit from Becker in New Jersey; they also sound as good as any modern radio, and they can add BT etc if desired.
A bargain, in my opinion.
Lovely car. They are wonderful drivers, for a fact. Not to quibble but the restoration shop ought to have done the dash wood; it disgraces the car. The burl wood is the most attractive of the commonly offered veneers in this car. The new owner should have it removed and send it to Madera. Sadly, the fellow in NC who used to do them is no longer with us. His shop was terrific.
Incidentally, there is a kit available to install a Sanden AC compressor in place of the original York- uses less hp, cools better, and is quieter. Bud's Benz has it.
A serious deal, if you ask me, with so much of the heavy lifting done. Congratulations on acquiring a legend.
They made about seven thousand of these, perhaps not that many. (I don't know how many are left, but the later cars are the ones to have.) The tinworm has taken many of them. If you've thought about acquiring one, do it here and now. They aren't making them, they are a fortune to restore, and parts will continue to get pricier. This looks like a lovely example. The quality of these automobiles is beautiful, the performance and styling legendary. If you are a Mercedes aficionado, driving a 6.3 is an experience you ought not to miss. (and, yes, I have one, or I'd be in this.) GLWA, hope it does very well; it deserves to.
I would call that a very good win. Happy motoring over thousands of miles!!!
Thank you for posting the video! I have a 500E and love it. They are complex cars, but go like crazy when sorted.
Thank you.
Are the factory wheels included with the car? Thank you.
This was a DEAL for the buyer, who did very well here.
Hard to imagine a better shop for these cars than Renntech. This car is definitely the 500E you would want to buy. 500Es are slowly advancing in value, but this one ought to be worth considerably more than average.
One of the best-styled cars they ever made, classic Paul Bracq understated elegance. Just lovely, and built when engineering and quality were what they sought, first and last.
Now, if I understand the discussion on the monoblock wheel auction properly, in fact those wheels will not fit on this car. Correct me if wrong. This looks to be a good 500E with a long ownership history and lots of care. This is what I would want if I were shopping for a 500E. Fungible items like tires wouldn't concern me as much as making sure everything works and that the AC system is leak-free. Putting a new evap unit in almost any Mercedes is a big undertaking; I've been there. Good luck with the auction- looks like a nice example of a very desirable car.
Thanks to all who helped me understand what fits and what doesn't.
This clarifying comment is most welcome. Thank you.
So these wheels in fact would not fit on my 1992 500E? There is nothing wrong with the 8-hole wheels I have, which are original. I just think the AMG wheels look better.
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Would these wheels fit on a 500E, without spacers? Thank you.
Mario, thank you! I've lost your phone number, though. I'll message you through this site.
Since I'm local, could I get a look at this car? Thank you. Jim Rosenthal
Well done!! Incidentally, when these cars were new, Mercedes supplied a set of black spacers for the rear suspension in case an airbag collapsed. They are now available again- call David at Bud's Benz in GA, and have the VIN ready. They were NLA for ages.
Still a good deal for a functioning 600. They are not exactly thick on the ground.
It was sort of like piloting the SS United States would have been- took a while to get to speed, but once there, nothing was going to touch it.
I've driven a couple of these over the years... including one that Karl M fitted with a Vortec centrifugal blower. Quite the experience, that was.
Very cool historical artifact that you can drive and zip around in. I'm keen to see what it brings.
Oh, boy. Can't wait to see that one, if it appears here.
I think that was a deal, and I wish I had had room for it. Sigh. What do you have next? :)
That gray car was outstanding.
Still a bargain, but I don't think that will last.
It appears that some attention will be required to the seat upholstery and cushions, as well as the damaged right front fender. What else does this admirable survivor currently need in the way of service or replacment? Thank you.
What a beautiful car, AND a manual, AND an AMG. Hardly gets any better than that. Hard to resist, to say the least.
@Schultzygood question. I really thought 118 would do it.
I spoke too soon.. does this mean not sold?
Formidable price for a formidable car.... I suspect the minute you floor the throttle pedal, you'll instantly forget what it cost.
Getting her propers, she is....
How does it work with the two CD changers? That is a new one for me. Fantastic car, even hotter than a 500E, which isn't exactly tepid itself.
Would look even better with an original radio, but just a beautiful classic Mercedes.
Nice 308, at least I think that's what it is.
Thank you! I will look those up.
Thank you! Looking them up, now.
Thanks for letting me know about these wheels, which look great. What size tires would go on them, if you know, to duplicate the overall width and rolling diameter of the original 16" wheel package now on my 500E? Thank you.
Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for a set.
These would fit on a 124 500E? Thank you.
What a sweetheart of a car.
Whoever did the interior refit appears to have done an exemplary job of it. Cognac is a difficult leather to find, and this leather appears very close if not identical to what they had when new. Kudos to the trimmers who did this.
I love this car and wish I had room for it, both in my garage and bank account. Sigh.
@TheAMGKit, actually, with the manual gearbox these cars do fine in traffic, you just have to rev them up. The 5 cylinder versions, at least over here, all had automatic transmissions and offered no advantage over the manuals. The turbo 5cyl cars are faster, but you miss the fun of shifting gears. For use in the USA, the fact that this car doesn't seem to have AC IS a negative; retrofitting AC to this car would be a huge headache and make it less original. And with 60 hp, it doesn't have a lot of power to spare for running the AC compressor. So if you live in a temperate part of NA, where they don't salt the roads in winter, where you don't get a lot of hot days, where it's generally dry so you don't need the defrost function, this might be the ideal car for you. I admit I can't readily think of such a place, but perhaps there is one. It's a well-kept car, for a fact.
Interesting and beautiful car. Paint reads as dark brown in some shots, black in others. So the interior is leather, not MBTex? Are there service records with the car? Thank you.
@MedhatElsergany maybe they wanted to put in a serious bid?
I agree. I bought them new back then, and I still drive them. This car was built at the zenith of Mercedes quality.
Back when MB really did build the best cars in the world. Not the fanciest, not the fastest, but the best engineering. And build quality.
Seems this car has had an adventurous life. A collision in which it was overturned, AND a theft resulting in a total loss. Talk about a run of bad luck.
I'd rather have this car than a Red Pig, which would really only be usable on a track. And for what it would cost to duplicate a Red Pig, you could buy this one and a 500E and own TWO of the best cars MB ever made.
Thank you for clarifying that. I hope she finds a new owner. She is really a lovely car.
This ought to have done the job, if not close. I'm curious, too.
@GoBoGoI think the trunk badge is way cool. History and all that. I'd leave it right where it is.
For a six-cylinder low grille car, shouldn't this have been enough to buy it?
Does this car have AC? I was not able to tell, ,but I did not think it does.
Thank you! Cores are hard to find, so if it's present, it's a plus for certain.
Is the camber compensator still with the car? (they can be rebuilt, but you have to have a core) Beautiful car is great colors.
Apologies, already explained. My mistake.
Interesting for a Euro car, it has USA headlamps. Does this car have AC? Thank you.
Really impressive car- the one to have if you want a 126 coupe. Which are very desirable cars.
This was NOT the car which sold on BaT within the last month. That is a different car with a different VIN.
Not a bad deal all around. Leaves room for a few odds and ends on what appears to be a basically quite sound car. Well done, all around.
Nice car. Can you specify what rust repairs were done, if you would? Thank you.
Any idea when motor was last able to turn? (not to run, but not stuck) An alloy-block Mercedes V8 would be perfect, and a Getrag manual transmission, like a 265/5... not too much upfront weight, and LOTS of power. I wonder if you convert the front brakes to discs...
Seems a bit thin for what this car offers... maybe they can put a deal together.
Wow.. this looks like the original dash radio unit. Been a while since I've seen one of those.
I have a 109 car- they are some of the best postwar automobiles MB ever made. It's a little weird to see something you bought new now as a classic, but I can say with a clear conscience that I loved them when they were not classics, just used cars. I'm glad to see they have come into their own.
Very complete photo set. I would immediately take this car to Dryce for cleaning the underside.
They are amazing cars. Probably a bit higher maintenance than a standard 124, but what a ride.
I'm curious to see if the 500E board folks comment on this one. It looks very nice indeed. They usually have a file of information, at least on US spec cars.
Actually, I don't. No doubt I should, but I don't. Was it recently? I look at entirely too many cars on line, which is why I have too many of them.
What a beautiful car. If I were going to buy a 107, it would be this one.
This would not work with a 1971 M116 engine, isn't that right?
Nice car. I thought the 250SE 111 coupes had the wooden instrument binnacle, though- anyone know?
Thank you!
FI or carburetors, may I ask? Thank you.
Very well-preserved car... I remember these as new vehicles. Bearing in mind that Mercedes factory AC in that era wasn't exactly freezing, does the AC work? Thank you.
Really a nice deal on what looks like a VERY handsome car. Kudos all around.
Lovely car, wish I had space for it.
It was a bargain, there, for a bit. Still a good deal.
Ah, auction is waking up a bit.
Thank you. It appears to be in very good shape.
Beautiful car. Any known needs at this point?
I'll look, and thank you. I always love reading about MB specials cars, the only thing better is driving them.
These cars, which are rather rare, have value not only because of their performance (which is legendary) but because of their rarity and the fact that they were all custom built. I had the impression, though, that there are some cars which may contain AMG parts or mods, but that were not built as genuine AMG Hammers. (this doesn't apply to this car, I don't think) Can anyone point me to a reliable source of information on that topic?
Still a good deal, although things got hot at the end. Very nice car.
Now the real action begins.
These are worth restoring, but a restoration of an M100 109 is not inexpensive. Just the parts to do the air suspension would approach eight or ten grand. These cars were not rustproofed from the factory, so if there is rust showing, there may be more to deal with. The new owner, if/when there is one, might consider sending the car to Eastern Europe for a complete restoration; there are shops in Poland at Latvia which would merit looking into for a complete resto. Even by modern standards, these are still fast cars, and the experience of all that torque and the roadholding of the air-suspended chassis is exhilarating. Not a cheap thrill, but a big one.
Is this the 3.5 or 3.8 engine? Good to know about the timing chain, that it is the two-roller version.
With diesel over $6.00/gallon, this starts to look like a very good alternative to the 300CD. Nice example, too, in good colors.
How about telling her you just bought her a car?
Well, I did that a lot and now no more space left. I mean REALLY no more. But this is a really well-done car. I had one when they were new and they are just terrific automobiles.
I so wish I had room for this beautiful car. Sigh.
I think in a different location, Europe or NA, this car would have been bid higher.
Automatic? I don't think these were offered in an automatic. Looks like a nice car, other than the modern radio. I think the location is problematic unless a potential buyer is already in the Middle East.
Nice car, and entirely deserving of a new home. Really, rather a good deal at this figure.
Fossil... well, a prehistoric stone axe is likewise primitive, but you can sure do some damage with it. There's nothing one can say to someone who calls this car a fossil, except that you ought to drive one. Maybe you could do it under an assumed name, since anyone who read your remark isn't likely to allow you to drive theirs. Certainly not me. Fossil.... I thought the idea of this web site was to appreciate and market vintage and collector cars. Some of which inevitably are old, or older. Maybe you got lost on the web and ended up here by mistake?
It would indeed do that, with that ring and pinion. 126s are great turnpike cars.
Mr. Hedary's shop is extremely thorough. Are there service records that come with this distinguished car? Also, what is the current rear axle ratio, if known? Thank you.
Beautiful shape. Closest thing to a Forever Car out there.
Thank you! Usually they do, but not always. Much appreciated.
do the originals of the service records come with the car? thank you.
Nice result on a lovely car. Envious.
This is such a nice car. I really wish I had room for it (I don't). I've been watching it all week. Built by MB when engineering and intelligent ergonomics were THE most important things in MB cars- the pre-bling era, so to speak. I remember when 124 cars were considered the best medium size sedans you could buy. And this one is a jewel. I have no place to put it, which is good for everyone else, but sad for me.
Seems very clean underneath, to me, especially for a car which has lived in the snowy (and salty!) Midwest.
Nice car, but that last ought to have done the trick. I'm surprised.
Thank you. Any idea where the leak is?
Does this car have AC, and if so, does it work? Thank you.
Beautiful car. I am curious about the radio- is this a modern Becker? Seems a screaming bargain at the current bid, can't imagine it will stay that way.
Lovely car. I agree about the wheel arch trims, but fortunately from what the seller says, they come off without trauma. I have a similar car, but for a modern Becker radio which was a very nice addition indeed. A great car for tours and vacation trips.
I think they had a bright red, too, not a metallic, but it isn't as attractive as this color, by far.
Great color, and not a common one, on a great car. One of the best convertibles MB ever made.
Benson Motors' building is still there and still an MB dealership, although Benson himself is gone. Also the first place I had a Mercedes serviced- a thousand-mile checkup on a brand new 280SEL4.5 sedan, bought in Chicago and driven to DC area to visit family. Wish I had it now.
CD changer in trunk, or does it have to be added? Thank you.
Maybe it IS cable TV. After all, these ARE luxury cars.
LOL I thought it was cable TV
What is the box with the multiple wires connected to it?
Thank you. Bidding getting serious, now, which is nice.
Beautiful car. Couple of questions: -steering wheel appears to need a refinishing, to match the otherwise very fine interior. -did restoration extend to the drivetrain, suspension, mechanicals, etc?

Any idea when motor was last able to turn? (not to run, but not stuck) An alloy-block Mercedes V8 would be perfect, and a Getrag manual transmission, like a 265/5... not too much upfront weight, and LOTS of power. I wonder if you convert the front brakes to discs...

I have a 109 car- they are some of the best postwar automobiles MB ever made. It's a little weird to see something you bought new now as a classic, but I can say with a clear conscience that I loved them when they were not classics, just used cars. I'm glad to see they have come into their own.

Fossil... well, a prehistoric stone axe is likewise primitive, but you can sure do some damage with it.
