
This 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Signal Red (568) over a Creme Beige Karo Cloth (035) cabin. While true origination isn’t documented, it shows evidence of federalization in period by way of the lights, bumpers, and gauge cluster. As a rarer example, this 280SL is powered by a 2.8L M110 inline-6 paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes heated seats, air conditioning, manual windows, a Beige soft top, a paint-matched hardtop in Signal Red (568), an original Becker head unit, and a full size spare with factory tools. The selling dealer acquired the car in 2026 and has added approximately 100 miles to ensure driving quality. The odometer reads 94k miles at the time of sale and a folder of service records is included with the car. Under the dealer’s care the following services have been performed: a new clutch, a new throw-out bearing, a new radiator, a new oil cooler, a new fuel pump and filter, and an upgraded A/C compressor. Some imperfections are noted by way of light rock chips at the nose of the car and several small chips from age. The beige soft top appears to be relatively new and shows nicely without tears or snags. The rear window remains clear and non-creased.
14″ Bundt alloy wheels are shown in good condition and wear Hankook tires measuring 205/70 all around with 2022 date codes. A full-size spare bundt wheel and tire are located in the trunk floor and shown in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in Creme Beige Karo Cloth (035) and features heated seats, working air conditioning, manual windows, an original Becker head unit, 3-point seat belts, and woven wool floor mats. Additionally a Nardi steering wheel is mounted in place of the factory wheel. The original Zebrano veneer is shown with some fading and cracks noted. The rear parcel shelf shows well with matching beige carpets.
Gauges include a 160-mph VDO speedometer, 7k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and a six-digit odometer showing 94k miles. Auxiliary gauges include oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. It’s presumed this example was federalized in-period.
The 2.8-liter M110 inline-six features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was rated at 182 horsepower when new. A 4-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels. A folder of service records is included with the car.
