This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL first shows registration in California from 1992 through the present where it is being offered for sale by the current owner. This R107 is finished in Cabernet Red Metallic (587) over Creme Beige Leather (275) and is powered by a 5.5-liter M117 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes a paint-matched removable hardtop, automatic climate control, power windows and cruise control. Recent service includes a new set of Michelin tires, brake service, transmission flush, a new steering coupler, refurbished hirschmann antenna, and a new hood pad. This 560SL now shows 112k miles and is offered for sale with the original first aid kit, a clean Carfax, and a clean California title.
The car shows the factory 15” Gullideckel wheels which have been finished in chrome and are wrapped in a set of new Michelin X Tour all-season tires measuring 205/65 on all four corners. Recent service included a brake fluid flush along with a full set of new brake pads.
The cabin is finished in Creme Beige Leather (275) lining the center armrest and door panels while Burl Walnut wood trim adorns the center console and dashboard. Modifications to the interior include a black dash cover as well as an Alpine bluetooth head unit. Features include automatic climate control, power windows, cruise control and an outside temperature indicator mounted in the dash. The air conditioning system is currently inoperational due to a leak in the refrigerant system. The original first aid kit is included and shown mounted in its factory location behind the front seats on the parcel shelf.
Instrumentation includes a 170-mph speedometer which also houses the analogue odometer reading 111,858 miles. Other gauges include a tachometer, fuel level indicator, fuel economy indicator, oil pressure, coolant temperature and an analogue clock. Below sit a row of warning lights alongside the controls for the resettable trip odometer.
This 560SL is powered by a 5.5-liter M117 V8 which produced 227 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque when new. Recent maintenance to the engine included an oil change with new oil filter, driver side valve cover gasket and fresh air filters. A four-speed automatic transmission drives the rear wheels and has recently received a full fluid flush. The seller notes that the driver’s side lower ball joint will need to be replaced.
The Carfax report lists no accidents or damage reports, linear mileage updates, and 10 years of reported service visits. This 560SL is now offered for sale with the paint-matched removable hard top, original first aid kit and over three years of documented service history from the current owner.
The R107 was a staple in the Mercedes-Benz line-up for nearly two decades and this 1988 model year is one of the later facelift cars which includes the more powerful 5.5-liter M117 V8. While most customers went a more modest direction, typically choosing silver or black, this example is finished in a stunning Cabernet Red Metallic paint which stands out from most other R107 SL’s. This car has a lot to love sporting a clean history, desirable color combination, and life-long California registration.
