The bodywork is finished in Astral Silver Metallic (735) and features refinished brightwork including thinner Euro-spec bumpers. All the glass in this example remains original and displays OEM etchings. The care underwent a full professional repaint in the original color in the early 2000's under proir ownership. The headlamps, taillamps, and marker lights were all replaced recently with OEM parts and function as they should. The current owner added updated lenses with bulbs for modernized light output. Features include a power sliding sunroof, power antenna, and adjustable rear view mirrors. A polished exhaust pipe cover is installed over the OE bare metal tailpipe.
Refinished 14″ Baroque (Bundt) wheels with paint matched center caps measure 14x6 on all four corners and are shown with General Altimax tires measuring 205/70 showing 2021 date codes. A matching original full-size spare wheel and tire are shown in the trunk along with the original toolkit and hazard triangle. A spare painted center cap is included in the sale as well. The suspension was refreshed a few years ago and the current owner has done some steering component work in 2021.
The cabin is trimmed in Black MB-Tex (101) across the seats, door cards, dashboard, and armrest. The seats were recovered by the second owner with OEM-specific MB-Tex and show no rips, tears, or scuffs in the material. The cabin is accented with Zebrano wood trim on the dashboard, center console, and shifter surround. The Becker Grand prix head unit has been rebuilt and functions properly including indicator lights and preset functions. Air conditioning controls function as well and mitigate fan speed accordingly along with temperature and direction. Other features include controls for the operational power antenna, rear defrost, cabin lights, and sunroof. Newer OEM floor mats have been installed with the Mercedes-Benz emblem embroidered on the corners. The seller notes the right rear window stopped working. Some of the work performed pertaining to the interior cabin is as follows:
The original four spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 125-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer displays 212k original miles and the trip feature functions as intended. The cruise control reports to be non functional and is most likely the amplifier needs a rebuild which is around $100.
The 3.0-liter OM617 turbodiesel five-cylinder was rated for 110 horsepower and 160 lb-ft of torque when new and sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. In recent years, this 300SD has received more than $10k in preventative maintenance to ensure all systems function as they should. The following services have been performed with documentation:
This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD is offered by the selling dealer with a tool kit, safety triangle, two keys, years of service records including extensive preventative maintenance, and a clean New York title.
The W116 S-Class was the first luxury passenger vehicle to be fitted with a turbo diesel engine in the world. CAFE regulations put a pythonic stranglehold on clean air emissions which forced Mercedes-Benz to put more research and development into their diesel engines, especially for the North American market. In 1978, Mercedes-Benz introduced the short wheelbase 300SD which debuted the legendary OM617A engine. This W116 was foreshadowing what was to come from the brand in the North American market and these engines carried over into pretty much everything in the ‘80s. These diesel W116s have a strong cult following – an understandable one at that. This highly maintained W116 is the spec you think of when you close your eyes and imagine a late model W116. With the suspension having been gone through as well as a ton of engine work, there is no doubt this car has another 200k miles left in her. A lot of people that drive these are left underwhelmed and that’s mostly due to them driving roached out cars with tired steering and suspension components and tired interiors. Dialed in W116s still have a modern, everyday usable driveability to them and can do anything a modern car can but with stoicism and peak Geiger design language that’s timeless, especially with Euro bumpers!
