This 1981 Mercedes-Benz 280SE was originally ordered through the Schwaebisch-Gmuend branch in Germany and sold as a German market example. It was reportedly imported to the United States in the 2001 according to the first reported Carfax entry. Finished in Astral Silver (735) over a Black Leather (231) interior, power comes from a 2.8-liter M110 Inline-6 paired to a four-speed automatic transmission. Features include an AMG front lip spoiler, Rial mesh wheels, a power sunroof, cruise control, anti-lock brakes, and rear self-leveling suspension. Recent service includes a new Bosch Fuel accumulator, fuel filter, fuel tank damper cage, fuel return line to tank, fuel tank and hoses, fuel level sending unit, Bosch fuel pump, cleaned injectors, and a new battery. This 280SE currently shows just under 69k miles (TMU) and is being offered at No Reserve with recent documented maintenance, three keys, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Illinois title.
Finished in Astral Silver (735) with contrasting gray lower cladding, this example features shorter, European headlights and bumpers both front and rear. Exterior features include glass headlamps, a painted power sunroof, chrome window trim, and an AMG front lip spoiler. Paint imperfections are noted with specificity in the photo gallery and include clear coat failure, various scrapes, and spots of corrossion around the body.
This 280SE wears 16” Rial mesh wheels wrapped in Ultra Futura tires measuring 225/50 all around which the seller states need to be replaced. The wheels show various scuffs and imperfections around the hubs and lips. Rear self-leveling suspension is fitted from the factory.
The cabin is trimmed in Black Leather (231) across the seats, door cards, head rests, armrest, center console, and dashboard. Black carpets and floor mats remain with the car and walnut root wood veneer adorns the center console, door cards, and dashboard. The seller states the wood needs to be refinished and various tears can be seen in the seats along with a crack in the dash. The original Becker head unit has been replaced with a Sony unit with CD. Additional features include power windows, heated rear glass, and a Webasto heating unit. The seller notes the rear driver and front passenger window regulators need to be replaced.
The black steering wheel frames a 160mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer featuring an analog clock, along with gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The six-digit odometer has been converted to miles and now shows 68,670 miles (TMU).
The 2.8-liter M110 inline-six was factory rated at 182 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque when new. Over the past few weeks, the owner has undertaken some mechanical refreshing in order to ensure the car can run and drive. Work includes a new Bosch Fuel accumulator, fuel filter, fuel tank damper cage, fuel return line to tank, fuel tank and hoses, fuel level sending unit, Bosch fuel pump, cleaned injectors, and a new battery. The seller states the car currently needs new accessory belts.
