This 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG is number 64 of 150 examples built that started life as an SL600 before receiving extensive modifications from AMG when new. Finished in Special Order Sapphire Black (009) over Exclusive Mushroom Leather (565), power is provided by an AMG-tuned 7.1-liter M120 V12 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Factory equipment includes a panormaric hardtop, two-piece AMG monoblock wheels, xenon headlamps, remote central locking, heated seats, rear kinder seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and ADS suspension with adjustable ride height and damping. Additional modifications from AMG include a high-performance steering wheel, signed ashtray cover, dual-exit chrome exhaust tips, 300km/h gauges, and a Burl Walnut interior trim. The car was also sent to BRABUS by the original owner and received metal flared fenders and a Brembo big brake kit. A full service in preparation for the sale includes rebuilt top hydraulics, a flushing of all fluids, new spark plugs, new catalytic converter, new hydraulic spring accumulators, and much more. Japanese service history is included with the car along with a stamped service booklet and R129 AMG-specific manuals. Now with 93,843 kilometers (~58k miles), this SL70 AMG is offered for sale in Germany with the R129 AMG original manufacturer’s literature, AMG stamped engine block, original AMG data sheet, both remote keys and a clean Japanese title with accompanying export documents.
The exterior is finished in Sapphire Black (009) which was special ordered and believed to be 1 of 1 in this color. The car features a paint-matched removable panoramic hardtop and a power-folding black fabric soft top, both of which were factory optioned when new. The top hydraulic cylinders for the electric tops were rebuilt in 2024 along with a new soft top control unit. AMG body styling includes a sculpted front air dam with mesh intakes, extended side skirts, and a sculpted rear bumper. The front and rear fenders were widened by BRABUS under the original owner's care when new. The seller had both sides of the car repainted in 2024 to correct chips and light scratches from normal use over the years. Exterior features include xenon headlamps, front fog lights, heated and power-adjustable door mirrors, remote central locking and dual-exit AMG exhaust tips. The factory V12 badges remain mounted on the fenders while "SL70 AMG" badges can be found mounted on the trunk lid. The exterior is in good condition showing no signs of damage or rust.
Factory optioned 2-piece 18” AMG monoblock wheels are fitted with new Continental ContiSportContact tires measuring 245/40 and 275/35 respectively. The wheels were professionally refinished along with refreshed suspension including new hydraulic spring accumulators all around. The standard Adaptive Damping System uses hydropneumatic shock absorbers to control both ride height and stiffness. The original owner had a BRABUS-branded big brake kit by Brembo installed along with the widened fenders.
The seats are trimmed in Mushroom Multi-tone Leather (565) which extends to the door panels and also includes rear kinder seats. Burl Walnut wood trim lines the center console, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and instrument cluster. Interior modifications include a signed AMG ashtray cover, AMG gauge cluster, AMG door sills, an AMG wood/leather steering wheel, and a wood-finished arm rest on each door, center console, and courtesy light surround. Interior appointments include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and power-adjustable seats with three-position memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an MB radio with a CD player. The front seats fold forward to provide access to the rear kinder seats.
The AMG steering wheel features burl wood grips and "AMG" on the horn pad. AMG instrumentation includes a 300-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, economy, coolant temperature and oil pressure. Digital instrumentation includes an outside temperature sensor, a trip meter and the odometer which currently shows just under 93,843 kilometers, approximately 58k miles, from new.
As with all SL70 examples, this R129 originally featured a 6.0-liter M120 V12 and was destined from the factory to receive the increased displacement to 7,055cc by AMG. The 7.1-liter V12 is tuned to produce 489 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. A numbered AMG engine stamp on the block identifies this car as number 64 of the reported 150 SL70’s produced along with the upgraded displacement. Beginning in 2024, the car underwent a full service totalling 16,700 Euro with invoices provided. Service included a flushing of all fluids, new spark plugs, rebuilt top hydraulic cylinders, soft top control unit, new tires, new catalytic converter, new hydraulic spring accumulators, new steering components, AC service, and a new catalytic converter. Receipts from 2024 are provided in the gallery.
Underbody photos are provided by the seller. A fully custom stainless steel exhaust is mated to the original AMG tips and provides a more aggressive exhaust note without being unnecessarily loud according to the seller.
The seller notes that bidders from the EU and Germany are subject to the 19% VAT in addition to the bid price. The seller is able to assist in shipping needs for bidders. Included at the seller's expense, the car can be delivered to the seaport in Bremerhaven and handle export clearance in Germany.

@Alex33082 Hi You can see the engine stamp in the description. It is no 64! And the AMG Cert doc shows that it was converted when it was brand new! Title shows 7.05L displacement.
Hey! Just wondering — does the car have a plate or marking showing its number out of the 150 made? If yes, do you know which number it is?”

@Mebomees Hello It was converted at AMG Affalterbach before the 1st registration as shown on page 1 of the cert doc. This is a German spec AMG Germany car, no AMG Japan. The doc is included in the pictures!
One more question: does the documentation show the conversion to be done in AMG in Germany, or was it converted later in Japan?

@MrJagger thank you. Awesome CL btw !
@Tino absolutely. it's so boring these days in comparison. Here's the card for my CL I was referring to https://www.lastvin.com/vin/Mm8YVdBLz4k2JaKyD I don't think your car needs much help in the special department though! Incredible. Best of luck with the sale
@MrJagger awesome. I love that. It always displays a unique order. Today the production is not as flexible as it was in the 90ies and if you want something really unique, you have to pay way more for it. Eg 11900€ for the color Yellowstone on a SLS AMG GT ROADSTER. Unbelievable.
@Tino yeah on the card for my 97 C140 they're chatting away about the interior in German for another two pages beyond the official spec list. Definitely makes the car feel more individual/special

@sirmathrocks Hi It is a bad translation. Basicly it is a summary of the order, that the car is ordered in 009 sapphire black with instructions how to handle it. Means it is mentioned, that the buyer has to pay an additional amount and due to the AMG look factory order the AMG optics parts will be painted and mounted by AMG. Once I had a CLS55 AMG with a 5 pages datacard full of special instructions. I love the 1 of 1 factory orders. It makes special cars even more special.
@Tino what does record T text mean in the vin decoder. Who puts this text in? Never seen this before. Record T Text %TO 992 PAINTING SPECIAL PAINT OUTSIDE THE SAMPLE CARD SL 600 AMG SAPPHIRE BLACK MB 009 PRICE FOR SPECIAL PAINTING: 1070.-DM PLUS VAT FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS AND SILLS COVERS ARE NOT REQUIRED, AS THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH CODE 772 IS DELIVERED TO AMG. NOTE TO UT. OR BRANCH: 1. ORDER RECORDED ACCORDING TO DATA SHEET OF 26.04.96
Is there a better R129? 1 of 1..... with enough miles to drive it and not feel like an idiot..... that's the game changer for this one. Unbelievable car for so many reasons.
this car is beyond amazing. It even has the 18 inch AMG staggered 2 piece wheels by BBS. Definitely could be one of mbmarket's best auctions!
I truly believe this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting auctions in thembmarket.com history. Both top bidders are true enthusiasts with a proven track record of bidding on rare and special edition MBs. These are bucket-list dream cars for so many, and even just watching this auction unfold is an experience in itself. Big kudos to the seller for putting together such a great listing—I’m almost as excited as if I were bidding myself! Best of luck to all the bidders—this one’s going to be unforgettable!

Ohhh wowww....unreal perfection.
@Mebomees Hello This SL70 AMG was originally delivered to the Mercedes-Benz branch in Wuerzburg, delivery date 1996/08/13, german spec. Then the car was shipped to Japan with 1st registration date: 1996/11/08. The 2nd owner was mentioned in 2023/10/30. The dealer who sold it in Japan didn't give us any documents which show the names of the owners like service records or any invoices. Sometimes they cut it out, sometimes they mark them black and sometimes they let them in original shape. There is an odometer picture showing 88888Km in 2009/05/19. It still has original soft top and the interior shows up in original condition. The engine runs perfect, the transmission as well! We did everything the car needed to be perfect! Invoices are attached. The mileage is 100% original.
Do you have any information about its history? Are there any maintenance receipts or invoices available? Where was it originally delivered?

@Kirillva Hello. The left and right side of the car is repainted. No accident, no rust, no dents!
Amazing example, any information about the paint coating, is it all original? Thank you
Beautyful example. I have a 1997 SL600 and use it regularly, but some better stopping power and more pulling power really make these more usable, collectable and desirable than a new SL/comparable. Forget the new car tech it's all outdated in a year anyways and this will be around 30 years from now while anything new will most likely be recycled.
This is absolutely EPIC! Incredible spec, I'm dying for this one.
