Finished in Firemist Red Metallic (548), this SL is equipped with an AMG styling package (772) which consists of a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts and rear apron with a single exhaust outlet visible from the rear. The car is equipped with a color-matched hardtop and Java soft top, both of which are viewable in the gallery below. According to the seller, the AMG front bumper has been repainted during their ownership due to rock chips and bottom scrapes.
This R129 is now being offered at no reserve with a clean Carfax report, original toolkit, factory literature, maintenance records and a clean California title in the seller’s name. Videos are provided below showing the electric soft top functioning properly and a walkaround of the exterior and interior.

@OldCarProblems I never said secondaries aren’t needed for road legality. One actually can get smogged in Commiefornia without secondary cats. All of us in the auto enthusiast community out here know how, and I’ll gladly assist a CA buyer with this. Given the car has been in CA all its life and I live out here, the Magnaflows of course are CARB approved and I’m well aware of the requirement, but thank you nonetheless.
@sushipaste I'm afraid you're wrong about not needing the secondary cats to be legal to drive on US roads, nevermind being able to get the car smogged in CA. This should be explicitly disclosed to buyers. The magnaflows have to be CARB approved as well should a CA buyer be interested.
@OldCarProblems Thank you for pointing that out. So as long as two Magnaflow cats like the fronts are welded back into position, then the vehicle will be perfectly legal to drive on all US roads, but honestly Uncle Sam doesn’t care and will never care about something like this. Why the secondaries are gone? I had my exhaust shop do away with em. I like the mod as it makes the exhaust have a beautiful slightly deeper tone without increasing the volume. Primaries were already Magnaflow when I purchased.
Why does this car not have secondary catalytic converters? The primary catalytic converters look non-OEM as well. Maybe it's just me, but this type of thing should be explicitly disclosed so that an unaware buyer doesn't purchase a car that is not legal to drive on US public roads.
@GibsonMB The color is also a point of constant compliments, everywhere I go too! Definitely agree about the xenons. Was a requirement of mine when I first was looking for an R129
Great color on an R129. Xenons make such a huge improvement on the look of these cars too
@2002SA addressed this in a previous comment, buyer didn't pay and the sale fell through
What happened to the sale on BaT?
@retiredpasta Thanks! Did my best to always keep it good looking and as pristine as possible during my ownership
Wow this is good looking!

@Nishboo The trunk simply wasn't closed all the way. Photos in the gallery will show perfect alignment. Also thank you for your bid. Good luck!
It looks like the trunk is misaligned in the walk around video. Is that a correct statement to make or was it just not closed? What a gorgeous car!

@CryoBenz that’s the solid build quality era of Mercedes for you! Maintain these cars and they will truly last forever
Agreed, this thing shouldn't have any trouble going to the moon and back, let alone a cross country trip. Good luck to the seller, what a spec!
@sushipaste Okay, thank you.
@super500 yes sir ! The A/C works perfectly
@super500 I've played that game many times. Old British cars have left me hanging once or twice but a 90's or 2000's Merc, never!
Ok, thanks, BaT still has it up as sold. I particularly like this rare color, which is why I'm interested. I live on the east coast, so have to think about whether I want to drive it cross-country. A risk when buying someone's 20 year-old-car. Did it once years ago, was fine, enjoyed it. Is A/C working correctly?
@super500 yes, unfortunately that sale fell through. I took that as a sign to bring it to this site where it should’ve gone in the first place
@sushipaste I was following your SL500 on Bring a Trailer, where it just sold the other day for $15k. Looks like same seller name, so did that sale fall through? Please explain, I'm interested in this car.
Hello everyone! Welcome to my auction for this lovely 2001 SL500. I hope you all take the time to read through the details of this lifelong California car and take a look at all photos. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Thank You and happy bidding!
