This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300GD was originally ordered from the factory as either a demo car or an employee vehicle when new and was recently purchased in Europe as a restoration candidate. Refinished in Dark Green Metallic paint over Saddle leather, power is provided by a 3.0-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel engine sending power to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. Features include an upgraded colling system, upgraded turbo, easy-folding custom soft top, front and rear locking axles, updated high-output headlights, W463a style brake lights, late model W463 paint matched rear tire carrier cover, gloss painted steel bumpers, and installed A/C. The current owner has performed a nut and bolt cosmetic and mechanical restoration inside and out on this example. With an odometer reading 34k miles (TMU) and 100 miles driven since the restoration, this 300GD is offered for sale by the dealer with a clean Florida title.
The exterior wears newly painted Dark Green Metallic paint with contrasting gloss black painted bumpers and a satin lower engine protector plate. The fender flares are also painted in the green metallic body color with fresh rubberized impact strips tracing the beltline of the car. Newer W463a style brake lights are installed at the rear with high-output modern headlights installed at the front. A swing gate with spare tire and late model W463 color matched cover are mounted on the rear gate. The 1.6-year restoration and paintwork were performed no less than 100 miles ago.
18” five-spoke alloy wheels from a later W463 are fitted and wear their original silver painted finish. New Nexen Roadian HXT tires measuring 265/66 on all four corners have just been mounted and balanced showing 2023 date codes. A full-size spare is mounted to the rear door with the new style W463 paint matched cover.
The cabin was reupholstered in high quality saddle leather which lines the seats, door panels, dashboard, and rear compartment. Matching tan high pile carpets with tan vinyl borders have been fitted along the entire cabin. All four seats are fitted with seatbelts. The saddle leather seats and door/trunk panels are perforated and feature a partial diamond quilted pattern. An umbrella is included in the trunk compartment with teak wood flooring. Interior features include climate control with a front windshield defroster, lockable front and rear axles, power windows, updated Blaupunkt head unit, USB charging ports, and a lockable glove compartment. Mounted on the center console is a manual hand brake, controls for the four-wheel drive system, the gearshift for the 5-speed manual transmission and two cup holders. The restoration saw an A/C system installed with an A/C compressor switch on the dashboard along with a custom soft top with easy-folding capabilites. Aftermarket wood veneer lines the cabin and door panels. A video of the soft top mechanism has been included in the listing.
The three-spoke wood and polished metal steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer along with gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Lights for the differential lockers can be found mounted in the center. The five-digit odometer currently reads 34k kilometers (TMMU) with just 100 miles added by the current owner since the restoration.
This G Wagen is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-five turbodiesel OM617 engine producing 131 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The car and mechanicals have received a full nut and bolt restoration. The seller has provided engine bay photos along with undersides, and comprehensive restoration photos in the gallery.
The selling dealer says there was and is no rust on this W460 G Wagen. Start-up videos are provided below. A thick aftermarket radiator and electric auxiliary fan are seen through the grill since OEM equivalent parts are NLA. This 1979 300GD is now offered for sale in Jacksonville, Florida with a clean Florida title.
The seller has included the following videos:
Having driven a few cabriolet G Wagons, we can attest there are few cars on the road with more of a smile factor than one of these. The open air motoring while sitting in a properly high position is hilarious and has huge charm. Matched with an interactive five speed manual transmission with the enormously tactile and responsive turbodiesel OM617, this example would be a treat to drive and live with. The expensively trimmed interior, upgraded sound system, modern head unit, seats for four, and the engine bay that had us zooming in to drink in the detail work of the restoration makes this green on tan W460 a winner in our books. While sports cars and AMGs are enjoyable, this is a car that will have you smiling more than pretty much anything live on our site.
