The 722.342 transmission is specific to the first generation of 4MATIC cars introduced on the W/S124 line of E-Class. This was on a California owned car its whole life being parted out in 2024 with the last mileage report being 241k miles. A new main seal is seen installed on the output shaft. Very little corrosion is present on the transmission body and hardware.
This transmission was removed from a 1992 300TE 4MATIC wagon with the VIN of WDBED90E1NF198553. This transmission should fit 1990 - 1993 4MATIC station wagons and sedans with the M103 in-line six gasoline engines. The bowden cable, vacuum modulator, and oil pan are all included in the sale. The transmission fluid dipstick tube Allan bolt is also still attached for the next owner. It is recommended to replace the filter and do fluid service upon installation.
This California owned 4MATIC 722.342 four speed automatic transmission is now offered out of Downington, Pennsylvania by the current seller who will assist with world wide shipping on the buyer’s behalf.
This is the stuff we get excited about. This 722.342 transmission is the direct result of Audi Quattro forcing Mercedes’ hand to make full time four wheel drive passenger cars. The Stuttgart brand had to react to the force of nature the Quattro program was, dominating motorsport from 1976 on. People wanted four wheel drive passenger cars to traverse the alps and do other European things at high altitude. It finally caught on in America as wealthy families wanted luxury vehicles to climb to their ski resorts safely, comfortably, and with ease. A lot of 4MATIC cars have been taken off the road due to rust and salty climates over the decades, so to find a working transmission that spent its whole life in California and most likely a yearly visit to Lake Tahoe is like finding a unicorn. The transmission appears to be in good shape and isn’t a fuzzy, oxidized ball of corrosion. A rebuilt 722.342 from your go-to online retailer is going to be in the neighborhood of about $4k… if they have one in stock and dealing with the core and shipping back and forth is a pain. Just buy this instead. It’ll be way easier.

Didn’t you have a black 4matic sedan for sale a couple of months agoHello everyone, welcome to my no reserve auction. I’ve purchased two 124 chassis 4matics back to back and both had a transmission issues, while I was waiting to hear from transmission shop to see if they could rebuild them, I’ve purchased this one from ebay seller. The seller stated ‘tested’ and has high score, but of course the transmission shop was able to rebuild the transmission that’s on the car so this became extra. I didn’t even unwrap it, just need it gone so I can spare more room to make new mistakes :) good luck everybody! And congrats in advance!
