This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL California Coupe is a Euro market example which had gone under a restoration during the previous owner’s stewardship and is 1 of 831 produced in 1970. Finished in Silver Gray Metallic (180) over red leather, power is provided by a 2.8-liter fuel-injected inline-six which is mated with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes a removable hardtop, four-wheel disc brakes, chrome door mirrors, rear leather seats, manual windows, and a Becker Mexico radio. Also included in the sale is the paint-matched hardtop and a full set of matching custom luggage. Now showing 903 miles (TMU) on the odometer, this 1970 280SL is offered for sale by the current dealer with a clean Florida title, two keys, owner’s manual, matching luggage set, and is located in Kennedale, Texas.
The body is painted in Silver Gray Metallic (180) which appears to have been repainted during the restoration under the previous owner. Exterior features include a paint-matched removable hardtop, European glass headlights, two-speed wipers, dual-exit chrome exhaust tips, and two chrome door mirrors. With this being a California Coupe, the soft top has been deleted by the factory and replaced by rear leather kinder seats. The hardtop stand is not included in the sale.
The 14” alloy Bundt wheels are painted in factory silver with matching Mercedes-Benz center caps. Hankoon 195/75 tires are fitted on all four corners. Braking is handled by dual-circuit power-assisted ATE discs on the front and rear axles. New rotors, pads, and calipers are fitted. New Bilstein shocks are seen in the underside photos.
The cabin is upholstered in red leather with matching red loop carpeting and a matching red vinyl dashboard. Interior amenities include a lockable glove compartment, a dash-mounted clock, manually-adjustable seats, and a Becker Mexico radio. New wood rims the dashboard and shows no water or UV damage. The California Coupe comes fitted with a soft top delete from the factory with matching leather kinder seats installed in its stead. Manual crank windows are fitted as well as a wooden storage box integrated into the ashtray. Matching red luggage was built for this car with tartan inserts to fit into the trunk compartment. A full sized spare is included with a vinyl cover.
The black bakelite steering wheel fronts a 220-kph speedometer along with a 7k tachometer and a central multi gauge with fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The mechanical odometer shows 915 kilometers, true mileage unknown (TMU) as a 5-digit odometer which was presumably reset from the end of restoration.
The fuel injected 2.8-liter M130 inline-six is rated for 168 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. A restoration was done on the car during its previous ownership, but the current seller doesn’t have any records from the estate. In preparation for the sale, a new fuel pump was installed along with a fresh oil service. From the undersides, a new exhaust has been fitted, new fuel tank with a tank strainer, new fuel lines, steering components, valve cover gasket, battery ignition system, and more.
The car is a Euro market example that was purchased by the current owner at the beginning of 2025 from the previous owner’s collection out of Florida. This 280SL is now offered for sale by the current dealer in Kennedale, Texas with a clean Florida title, two keys, matching luggage set, and the owner’s manual.
