This 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG is a Japanese-market example that started life as an SL600 before receiving extensive modifications from AMG and is numbered 77 of the reported 150 units produced. Finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) over Black Multi-Tone Leather (561), power is provided by an AMG-tuned 7.0-liter M120 V12 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Factory equipment includes Xenon headlamps, remote central locking, heated seats, Bose audio, dual-zone automatic climate control and ADS suspension with adjustable ride height and damping. Modifications from AMG include two-piece wheels, a high-performance steering wheel, a signed ashtray cover, dual-exit chrome exhaust tips, chrome door locks and a Burl Walnut gauge cluster. Extensive Japanese service history is included with the car. Now showing 145k km (~90k miles), this SL70 AMG is offered for sale by MKB Motoren Manufaktur on behalf of the current owner in Abu Dhabi, UAE with the original manufacturer’s literature, both remote keys and a clean UAE title in the current owner’s name.
The exterior is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) and features a paint-matched removable hardtop and a power-folding black fabric soft top. AMG body styling includes a sculpted front air dam with mesh intakes, sculpted side skirts and a sculpted rear bumper. Exterior features include Xenon headlamps with wiper/washers, front fog lights, heated and power-adjustable door mirrors, remote central locking and a dual-exit AMG exhaust with chrome tips. The factory V12 badges remain mounted on the fenders while SL70 AMG badges can be found mounted on the trunk lid. The exterior is in good condition showing no signs of damage or rust.
18” AMG two-piece light-alloy wheels are fitted with Landsail LS588 tires up front and Nexen N’Fera AU7 tires at the rear measuring 245/40 and 275/35 respectively. Date codes from 2020 can be seen on the rear tires. The standard Adaptive Damping System uses hydropneumatic shock absorbers to control both ride height and stiffness.
The seats are trimmed in Black Multi-Tone Leather (561) which extends to the door panels and dashboard while Burl Walnut wood trim can be found on the center console, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and instrument cluster. Interior modifications include a signed AMG ashtray cover, chrome AMG door locks, AMG door sills and an AMG wood/leather steering wheel. Interior appointments include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and power-adjustable seats with three-position memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an MB exquisite radio and cassette player and a 6-speaker Bose audio system. The front seats fold forward to provide access to the rear cargo trays.
The AMG steering wheel frames an AMG instrument panel including a 300-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, economy, coolant temperature and oil pressure. Digital instrumentation includes an outside temperature sensor, a trip meter and the odometer which currently shows just under 145k km, approximately 90k miles, from new.
This R129 came from the factory with a 6.0-liter V12 whose displacement was subsequently increased to 7,055 cc and tuned to produce 489 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. A numbered AMG engine plaque identifies this car as number 77 of the reported 150 SL70’s produced, and 7.0 can be seen stamped on the bottom of the engine block.
Underbody photos provided by the seller show few signs of corrosion along with the AMG dual exhaust and AMG part numbers on the body panels. Extensive service records from Japan are included with the vehicle and documented in the photo gallery below. The seller notes that the car will receive a full service from Mercedes-Benz of Abu Dhabi before being delivered to its new owner including an engine oil and oil filter change along with a complete inspection.
This SL70 AMG is now offered for sale by MKB Motoren Manufaktur on behalf of the owner in Abu Dhabi, UAE with both remote keys, the original manufacturer’s literature and warranty information and a clean UAE title in the seller’s name.
A video showing the convertible top operation, suspension operation and startup of the engine is viewable below.
With a growing desire from luxury buyers for more power and displacement, as well as the introduction of BMW’s M70 V12, Mercedes found it necessary to enter their bid into the 12-cylinder offerings with the M120-powered S600, CL600 and SL600. With 6.0-liters of displacement and 48 valves, the M120 produced a healthy 389 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, however, in the hands of AMG, and with an extra 1,000 cc of displacement, an additional 100 horsepower would be produced along with 531 lb-ft of torque. AMG would fit this specification of motor into all three 600’s including the SL reportedly making 150 units of the SL70. This example was originally delivered to Japan showing extensive Japanese service records, original literature and AMG warranty information. For an enthusiast looking for a true piece of AMG history, this SL70 presents a rare opportunity to purchase an extremely rare, top tier V12-powered R129 with original AMG modifications.

@Harrdware we can ship the cars with See freight. we can arrange this for you if you wish. For exact prices to delivery we need your location and whether you have your own customs agent to take over as CFR or want to have a full service delivery to your door.
I would imagine some prospective bidders are going to wonder how to get the car to the USA if they win the bid.
Legendary! Will be watching this one!
