Harrdware bid $1,993

W201s like this are a great way to enter into the Mercedes-Benz collector car world. They are quite reliable and inexpensive to own, from the Era when Mercedes built to a standard, not to a price. I've owned 3 190E 's and can't picture a day when I won't have one in my collection.
Has this car been shown at the Amelia Concours, or Amelia Cars & Coffee, in the past? I remember seeing an excellent example there that was owned by a gentlemen in south Florida.
Yes, the biodegradable wiring harness. I have a W124 as well, and made sure when I was looking for one that the harness had already been taken care of, at a MB dealer no less. By the way, the bio harnesses plagued other Euro cars of the same era, such as some BMWs and Volvos. It was a Bosch thing, originally, I believe. And the replacement harnesses (at least the one on my car) were from Delphi, the GM spinoff.
An investment grade example of a currently underrated but important part of AMG's history with Mercedes. Every bit the performance equal to the venerated 500E/E500 cars of 92-95, in a more compact package, with a less complicated (and now legendary) M113 engine, an extra gear in the transmission, no fussy rear leveling system, and easy OBD-2 diagnostics. I certainly enjoy my C43 every time I jump into it for a spirited drive. The W202 C43s are hard enough to find in general - one with these low miles and in this condition is a unicorn.
Can't agree more with the MB Market insights. Having owned one myself, among more than a dozen other MBs of the same era, there's a lot to like about the important W202 series of AMGs. They are quite easy to live with, and relatively dependable, in daily use.
All the right touches on this one! If it were mine, I'd keep the original rims and fill up the wheelwells with some 17's. Great to see it up for grabs! Hope it does well!
These are a blast to drive! German version of an American musclecar -- big engine in a small car -- but the whole package here, with handling and braking to match the straight line fun. I'm going to hang on to mine.
@herbie keys for 190E models are not electronic, and are readily available at reasonable cost at any mercedes-benz dealer.
A sweet little ride! will be watching this one. The "luxury" one of the two send-off models (the black 2.6 model was the "sport") that M-B offered on a very limited basis as they prepared to switch over to W202 production. Only offered in the USA. Not quite a "sport", not really a "designo", but offered many features as these special-order models, in a unique mix of colors and trim, with no options. The first factory "badge delete" model, by the way.
I would imagine some prospective bidders are going to wonder how to get the car to the USA if they win the bid.
Legendary! Will be watching this one!
@merc2000 No worries. One can get used to shifting a dogleg anyway. A beautiful car.
And the 5 speed is NOT a dogleg 1st gear! Good news! Much better for real world driving, vs. dogleg manuals. This vehicle has a nice spec. and presents well. Should do well on the MB Market auction. Best wishes.
Impressive! Looks well-kept. An amazing value at current bid levels. Plenty of life left in this one.
Well now I see where Mercedes got the stunning color scheme for the rare 1997 SL320 40th Anniversary Roadsters! Deja vu!
The LEs are fascinating cars, a nice parting gift from M-B at the end of the run of the much-loved W201 series, to carry sales forward until the newer W202s came out in the Fall. There were two LE's - an Emerald Green 2.3L ("Luxury"), and the Black 2.6L ("Sport") that you see here. Truly Limited Editions (a first for M-B), also the first as-planned "badge-delete" M-B models. Having owned several W201s, I should note that performance from these 2.6 models was about on par with the 2.3-16 models (in auto version), with the added benefits of less frequent and less complicated maintenance. Great to see a prime example of this rare model here on the MB Market .
Sweet cars, relatively simple by Benz standards -- insert big motor in little car, go fast! What a concept! From the era when Benz build quality was top of the industry. A historic car - the first planned-from-scratch AMG/MB model - the first AMG/MB V8 officially offered through the US dealers (joined by the E55 in 1999), relatively rare then, even more so now. Sure to appreciate in the future. I know mine has since I bought it. GLWS!
It's just getting warmed up! Also great to read in the description that the two major service items for this era, the wiring harness and the head gasket, have already been taken care of.
Looks to be a well-sorted car, judging from the qualifications of the seller. I bet it rolls!
They write books about cars like this.
I'm thinking of that song by Yellow that was in the Ferris Bueller movie as I look over this listing -- oh......yeah!
Outstanding! As if these weren't rare to begin with, here is one with 12K miles! Nice work, MB Market, bringing this one to auction. Now to rummage thru all my seat cushions to gather enough $$ for a proper bid. Will be watching this one closely!
Will be watching this. They make great daily drivers. From the pinnacle era of MB build quality.
A beautiful car in a seldom seen exterior color. Well kept. Should make for a fine road trip cruiser for the next owner.
Best SEC I've seen in a long time. The right colors, options/add-ons, small bumpers, the early AMG Aero's (logo without the hash marks), and a great "stance". This car should do well. Wish I could add it to the stable!
Amazing condition for the mileage. Someone cherished this vehicle over the years, apparently.
Really interesting! Can't say that I've seen another one like this before!
Nice presentation, nice result.
Nothing like factory issued EVO II rims, along with the special 40th Anniversary package, to set this fine example apart from the relatively common SL500 choices out there. Further, it sounds like it ticks all the boxes regarding service and maintenance, especially regarding the Top Hydraulics cylinder renewal. I don't have to say GLWA because I know this one will do well.
Even the more pedestrian Benz's look so classy! A beautiful car! So great to see one in this condition.
Questions - 1. where is the lower rear seat cushion? 2. has the head gasket been addressed? 3. has the biodegradeable wiring harness been replaced? Thanks.
WOW - Blue interiors, manual tranny wagons - the stuff dreams are made of!
Beautiful! An undisputed modern classic, in great colors. A great example of the R129 for a collector. Hope this does well.
Headlight wipers were part of the option package for xenon headlights. The only other option on these in the USA in 1998 was rain sensing wipers, I believe.
Nice price!
Someone's going to get a bargain on this one.
Awesome, well cared for example of a relatively rare early corporate AMG. W202 series AMGs are certainly destined for further appreciation over time, as the necessary link between the tuner era AMGs, and the later integrated versions of each new MB model.
Nice presentation! And lots taken care of on this one! Will make a new owner very happy.
A toss up between this series (mid-series W124, M103 engine) and a similar late W123, for the ultimate, rock solid, dead-reliable gas powered MB ever. And if it were the diesel version, would likely last until the Rapture. Or at least star in the next Mad Max movie.
Congratulations on a strong result, Blakley! Best wishes to the new owner. It's the real deal, and a sure fire collector car.
Wow! A practical classic! Love the plaid seats! Don't be deterred by the mileage. I had two W124 wagons and took them well over 200K miles in daily use. And mine were gasoline powered.
A beautiful, well-preserved example, in a rare color for 190s. Great to see the door cards are still relatively intact, and the webbing behind the front seat is tight. I would suggest, that having owned several W201 cars - as compared to W123s, one would find this a superior ride, thanks to the innovative multi-link rear suspension that was introduced with this model, which was so well-engineered, that versions of it survive to this day, in some M-B and Chrysler models. Although the rear seat area is a bit tighter on the "Baby Benz".
Such a well-preserved example! Even the non-unavailable C36 logo floor mats are in great shape! The climate must be mild where this one was kept. From the era of biodegradeable wiring (1993-1996 for most models). I imagine the wiring harness is likely original due to how well-preserved the car is, however, it will be a task for a future owner at some point.
So nice to see an example with no fade on the orange needles in the instrument panel! Nice to see the supple leather seats, not dried out like most are by this time. Great to see the original labels in the engine compartment as well. Hope the aftermarket wheel arch moldings can be removed without damaging the paint. Not sure if I have ever seen a green A124 Cabriolet with a light tan cloth top. Was the top replaced at some point? All the ones I've seen, including my own, have black tops.
A keeper! From the era when the model number, meant the real engine size. I would agree with MB Market that most of these (so few to begin with), were purchased with the intent to drive hard, even track it. It's not a cream puff SL. Plenty of those were bought new as part of multi-car owners who kept them parked at the garage at the beach house. Not so with these early AMGs. Watching this one closely.
Looks great! Ahh, Ahhlmadine Red - a rare color on A124s. Almost matches the Virginia Tech maroon! Actually, this is a non-ASR option car. There is no button on the dash, nor is there the little screen on the odometer which would indicate such. It's a needless complication anyway, which won't be missed on this type of car, unless one decides to drive in bad weather, which is doubtful for an A124 Cabriolet these days. Yes, it does look well-cared for. Kudos to the seller for doing the right things with this car. One note: MB factory didn't offer chromed rims in 1995. Perhaps the selling dealer or original owner added them. Best wishes for a great result!
Sweet car. I've had several W201s, including a 2.6 like this one. With the torque of the 2.6, coupled with the 5 speed, this car is more than comparable to the Cosworth 2.3/16s of the mid 1980s. The 190's have a great suspension for touring - the first version of a line of five-link rear suspensions that M-B perfected in this era. If this one has been well-maintained, the higher mileage shouldn't be an obstacle - many more miles are ahead, surely. The LE's were interesting cars, with some unique packaging reserved just for them. Check out the rear headrests - the faux carbon fibre trim - the red striping on the Recaros- the badge delete on the trunk. The 5 speed conversion only makes this LE even more fun.
Rust-free. That's a huge selling feature on W210s, as we now know, from how well the body holds up over time.
German musclecar, this
These are faster than the famous W124 E500's, plus - no auto leveling rear suspension to deal with, and one more gear in the transmission.
Everytime someone bids, it extends the time
The MB Classic Center says the two trunk badges ("C43" & "AMG") are still available.
Join the fun folks! I already have a couple of C43s, or I'd be bidding on this nice driver! The C43 is a classic muscle car, German style - big engine in small car - and is very stealthy in appearance, but has plenty of go power for road trips! The powertrain on these is quite reliable. Even then, AMG was hand-assembling their engines, they just didn't start with the signature plates until later years. Some attention might be needed at some point on the transmission shift conductor plate. Otherwise, one can expect many miles of dependable service from a W202 C43 series car, with proper maintenance.
Great to see a C43 come up. The first official AMG-Mercedes V8! The only AMG model available for sale in the USA in 1998! One of perhaps 550 sold that year - how many are left? They're so hard to find nowadays, especially a nice one, in a less common color. We'll be watching the outcome of this one closely!
The consummate "S" class Mercedes - W126. And such a pristine example. In such a cool color. Would love to add this one to my stable! A sure fire modern classic.
So rare a model, even when new. AMG choices in the USA in 1999 were the C43 AMG, and ... this car, the first year AMG E Class offered under the corporate umbrella. And to see one in such great condition is outstanding. Doing well now - and yet sure to continue in appreciation in the years to come.
