This M104 3.4-liter 24v gasoline Inline-6 engine was originally built for a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300CE 3.4 AMG which spent time in Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and most recently the United States. The car was purchased by the seller from a known collector and the engine and transmission removed simultaneously in preparation for an engine swap. The auction includes the engine and transmission mated together along with the alternator, ancillary pumps, drive belts, and AMG M104 airbox. The engine and trannsmission are noted to be in good working order.
This AMG 3.4L 24v M104 engine number reads 104980-12-035697 and is complete. These engines produced 268 horsepower and 243 foot-pounds of torque when new. An AMG M104 airbox is installed and included in the sale. Also included in the sale is the alternator, water pump, oil pump, a/c compressor, wires, exhaust manifolds, and more.
The attached transmission is a 722.5 5-speed automatic. The .5 variant was produced for European Market examples and, per the datacard, was originally paired to the engine and subsequent chassis. The transmission number reads 722501-03-764057 and a photo of the stamp is included in the gallery.
This engine and transmission pairing were removed from the car with 105k kilometers (~65k miles) shown on the odometer. The datacard indicated matching engine and transmission numbers along with the 957 AMG data code. They are offered for sale by the current owner and seller out of Danville, California.
The seller has included the following videos:
Well, it’s not often you run across a 3.4L AMG Engine paired to the venerable .5 transmission. This is a supremely cool auction listing that we’re happy to represent as rare parts get us all excited. These hotrodded inline-6 engines are incredibly satisfying to drive and provide loads of torque and feedback. Beyond the obvious, this is an engine no longer in production and arguably isn't likely to be produced again. Auctions like this are significant for the future of these cars since it’s vital to keep these important historical automotive artifacts on the road.

This ended up only slightly (extremely) out of my budget, darn. @Smcase22 I'm gonna venture a guess that this will be going into the 300CE AMG you picked up last year?
@Smcase22 I assume we will be connected by the modurator?
@smcase22 huge congrtas!

For anyone looking for shipping quotes: The weight of the engine and trans is 730lbs sitting attached on the metal cradle we built for it. Add another 50lbs for the box we will build for it, so you are looking at 780lbs. The box dimensions will be 34" wide, 64" long and 34" tall. We will build a very secure container for this. My guys have experience with shipping large and heavy freight.
The compression test came back really good. Cylinder 1 190 Cylinder 2 190 Cylinder 3 180 Cylinder 4 185 Cylinder 5 190 Cylinder 6 195 Keep in mind that the compression test was done cold since the engine is out of the car. Readings are slightly lower than they would be when hot. Cold metal components have tighter clearances. Our readings are pretty strong and consistent, especially since the test was done cold. They might even be higher when the temperature is warm. The normal range in most healthy gasoline engines is cylinder compression in the range of 170–210 psi when warm.
@MercAddict2010 Unfortunately, I don't.
Hi @anton28, do you have any idea of how much it would cost to ship to Montreal, Quebec?
$1,100 bid placed by @jspitz
The 104 engine also has the integral Behr oil cooler, tied into the oil filter with temp control, a nice addition to the hp and rpm.
@Osssie , The engine will be shipped in a crate. As you can see in the photos, we have already built a metal cradle for the engine and the transmission. I don't know how much it would cost to ship to Belgium. I'm happy to provide dimensions and weight so you can get an estimate.
hi, how are you going to ship the engine? in a crate? how much does this cost to Belgium? regards, Oscar
@AnEffinWookie 1) I will include the whole shifter assembly which bolts to the transmission tunnel. I might still need the trim piece, but if I don't, I will supply it with the sale. 2) It's a Pioneer head unit DMH-W3050NEX 3) If I don't need the air intake shroud, which I don't think I will, then I will include it as well. I will confirm with my shop this week and let you know.
Oh, hell, also is that passenger headlight intake mount/shroud piece included?
$850 bid placed by @AnEffinWookie
Couples questions, one mostly unrelated: 1) Will the shifter assembly/shift surround be included (like the black trim piece with all of the markings, not the whole thing)? 2) Can you tell us about the double din radio setup if you don't mind? Probably one of the cleanest installs I've seen.

@yaoh It really is. It produces great power, and the five-speed Euro transmission is an excellent pairing for drivability.
Wow. love the M104 motor. I have a '95 C36 and this inline 6 cyl is just outstanding.
To say I am tempted to drop this into my 300TE-24 is an understatement. I gotta make some phone calls.
Thank you for the information… All good! My Mechanic is very interested in it, so I sent him the link to the website to review. Again, I think the ECU will definitely be great to stay with the engine, as it’s a different CEO for the V 12 engine… Trying to reprogram these ECU is not easy as you know, so that would be fantastic. We’re staying up on it. Looking forward to more information, and we’ll go from there. Have a great day.
@UncleFred1 It appears that the engine wiring harness is integrated into the car and is not detachable. As we get deeper into the project, I'm sure we will remove(cut) most of it, so I can definitely provide anything that's left over from the conversion to the buyer. The ECU will come with the sale.
@arizonanights There is but I can choose to lift it.
@UncleFred1 Please find my answer below: Was a compression test done on the engine prior to removal? - No, but I'll have that done ASAP and provide the results. Do you have any videos of the engine when it was in the donor car running before removal? - Yes in the videos posted. How much of the wiring harness for the engine do you have… I can see some, but just want to find out if you have the entire wiring harness for it and what is missing if you don’t. - TBD determined soon. I need to see how much of OEM harness we are going to retain, if any. I should have an answer for this over the next day or so. Do you have the ECU for the unit? - Yes I do. I don't expect to need it, and I will provide it with the sale if I dont. You’re not away from me, so I can come take a look, but would like to get a few more details if possible… Thanks! - Come by any time
Hello @anton28, is there a reserve price for this auction?
Few questions… Was a compression test done on the engine prior to removal? Do you have any videos of the engine when it was in the donor car running before removal? How much of the wiring harness for the engine do you have… I can see some, but just want to find out if you have the entire wiring harness for it and what is missing if you don’t. Do you have the ECU for the unit? Some of these questions may be covered on the videos, but they won’t play on my phone for some reason 😩. You’re not away from me, so I can come take a look, but would like to get a few more details if possible… Thanks!
@C43EZRider , I'm installing the motor, transmission, and rear end out of a 2008 SL65.
Why was this removed from the car?
Hello everyone. I'm here to answer any questions you might have. Happy bidding!
