This Mercedes-Benz Cosworth in-line four cylinder 2.5-liter 16 valve complete cylinder head is offered by the selling party in Beirut, Lebanon. This M102.990 cylinder head was designed by the British automotive engineering firm Cosworth when Mercedes-Benz hired them to create a race engine to take on world wide rally stages utilizing the Mercedes-Benz M102 in-line four cylinder engine introduced with the new, sharp edged Sacco design language cars of the 1980s. Replacing the M115 engines of the ‘70s, the M102 engine was a big bore, short stroke four cylinder engine – an engineering design philosophy that pairs harmoniously with high revving engines, making this a good candidate for motorsports. By September of 1988, the 2.5-16V made its introduction, replacing the 2.3-16V and the cylinder heads were then made in-house by Mercedes-Benz rather than by Cosworth.
Part number 102 016 01 01 is visible on the side of the cylinder head. Camshafts appear to be in good shape as to the caps. The engine coolant thermostat housing is included along with sensors. The timing gears and their teeth appear to be intact.
This M102.990 cylinder head was built for the regular 2.5-16V. The Evo I and Evo II engines were different from the base engines. The 2.5-liter engines got a deeper stroke than the 2.3-liter cars from 80.25 mm to 87.20 mm. These engines got a power bump to 195 horsepower and 173 pound feet of torque with peak horsepower arriving higher in the rev range compared to the 2.3-16V.
With low production numbers of the homologated Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16V being 5,743 units produced worldwide, seeing a M102.990 cylinder head in great condition pop up is a rare spectacle. Bidding on this cylinder head would be a wise choice for anyone who is planning on owning and driving their 190E 2.5-16V for decades more. Whether you’re an owner of one of these fantastic W201s or a parts specialist, we don’t know when another one of these will appear again for sale on the public market. Rare parts from Mercedes-Benz are a good thing to stockpile for collectors and enthusiasts alike as it’s important to keep these artifacts on the road.
