This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a US-market example which recently underwent a complete restoration including a new paint job, refinished brightwork and a complete engine reseal. Finished in Light Beige (181) over red leather, power is provided by a 2.8-liter fuel-injected inline-six which is mated with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes a paint-matched hardtop, four-wheel disc brakes, chrome door mirrors, manual windows and a Becker Europa radio. A modern electronic ignition system was fitted to the car during the restoration along with a new air conditioning system. Now showing 99k miles on the odometer, this 1970 280SL is offered for sale by the current owner with a UAE vehicle ownership certificate in the seller’s name.
The body received a bare metal respray in Light Beige (181) during its restoration in 2019 which also included the refurbishment of all brightwork. Exterior features include a paint-matched removable hardtop, front fog lights, two-speed wipers, dual-exit chrome exhaust tips and chrome door mirrors. The soft top mechanism has been removed from the car. The seller notes that the soft top lid shows minor signs of rust.
The 14” steel wheels wear paint-matched hubcaps and come fitted with Blockley 185 section radial tires. Braking is handled by dual-circuit power-assisted discs on the front and rear axles.
The cabin has been reupholstered in red leather with matching red carpets and a paint-matched dashboard. Photos from the restoration show that new Kilmat sound deadening has been fitted to the floor pan. Interior amenities include a lockable glove compartment, a dash-mounted clock, manually-adjustable seats and a Becker Europa radio. A new air conditioning system was fitted during the restoration in 2019. Additional maintenance performed by the dealer included the fitment of new door seals, and new door stoppers.
The black steering wheel is trimmed in matching red leather and fronts a 140-mph speedometer along with a 7k-mph speedometer and a central multi gauge with fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The mechanical odometer shows 99k miles with 1,300 miles added by the current owner.
The fuel injected 2.8-liter inline-six is rated for 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque and was completely resealed during the restoration. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the reseal, the fuel pump was also rebuilt and a modern electronic ignition system was fitted to the car. Under current ownership, the car also received a new brake booster, new brake lines and a new return valve
The car is a US-market example that was purchased by the current owner in 2019 and imported to the UAE from Illinois. This 280SL is now offered for sale by the current owner in Abu Dhabi, UAE with a UAE vehicle ownership certificate in the seller’s name. Photos at the end of the gallery show the condition of the car when it was imported from Illinois to UAE by the seller with its original pale yellow paint.
A walkaround, driving and rebuild video has been provided by the seller below.
The W113 or "Pagoda" SL is arguably one of the best looking Mercedes ever produced and moreover, one of the most iconic convertibles to come out of the 1960's. These cars are significantly better to drive over their predecessor, the 190SL, and seem to be poised perfectly as one of the best investment cars to buy. The Bracq-designed masterpiece was almost twice as expensive as the Jaguar E-Type of the time and seems to be a favorite amongst various MB enthusiasts and generations. This US-market example was the recent recipient of a comprehensive restoration which included a respray in a classic Light Beige finish with a complimentary red leather interior. In addition, the fuel pump rebuild, new electronic ignition and air conditioning will ensure that this Pagoda SL will remain reliable and enjoyable for its lucky new owner.
