This 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is a two-owner example which shows just 38k miles on the odometer from new. Finished in brown over Palomino MB-Tex (174), power is provided by a 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Factory equipment includes a brown folding soft top, a removable hardtop, front fog lamps, an automatic antenna, power windows and locks, air conditioning, cruise control and a Blaupunkt radio. Recent maintenance includes new plugs and wires, a new chain tensioner, an engine oil change and more. Partial service history is included with the car. This 450SL is now offered for sale by the selling dealer with the original manufacturer’s literature, the original tool kit and a clean Michigan title.
This roadster was originally finished in yellow before being repainted in brown by the prior owner approximately ten years ago. A paint-matched removable hardtop is included with a matching brown fabric soft top. Exterior features include North American spec bumpers with chrome accents, front fog lamps, an automatic antenna, heat insulating glass and a heated rear window. The body is clean showing no signs of corrosion.
The factory 14” Bundt alloy wheels wear their original silver finish and are wrapped in a set of Toyo Eclipse tires measuring 205/70 on all four corners. The tires were fitted in April 2019 and show 2018 date codes. A full-size spare is fitted in the trunk along with the factory jack and tool kit.
The cabin is trimmed in Palomino MB-Tex (174) with a color-coordinated dashboard and carpets. Interior appointments include manually-adjustable seats, cruise control, climate control with Behr air conditioning, power windows and a Blaupunkt Newport radio. A complete set of beige floor mats is included with the car.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The six-digit odometer shows just 38k miles from new.
This R107 is powered by a 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 which is factory rated for 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. Maintenance from April 2023 included new spark plugs and wires, a new fuel accumulator, fuel tank hose and fuel pump check valve, a new valve cover gasket, a new chain tensioner and tensioner gasket, a new oil filter and an engine oil change. Underbody photos provided by the seller show minimal signs of corrosion.
The car was acquired by the selling dealer in July 2023 from the second owner with partial service history. This 450SL is now offered for sale by the selling dealer in Tory, Michigan with the original manufacturer’s literature and a clean Michigan title.
Walk-around, startup and driving videos have been provided by the seller below.
The R107 is one of Mercedes’ best known and longest living chassis designs. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the R107 was in continuous production for 17 years until 1989 when the last 560SL was produced. While the R107 underwent several powertrain changes and minor cosmetic updates, the platform remained largely unchanged throughout the run making it one of the most iconic MBs of all time. These long nose roadsters elicit immediate nostalgic reactions and offer tremendous driving enjoyment for a very reasonable price. While prices for low-mile 560SL examples have skyrocketed in recent years, the 380SL & 450SL variants have remained comparatively affordable while offering virtually all of the ownership enjoyment of their larger displacement brethren. This example has been well cared for and was refinished in a very 70s brown paint with a soft top to match. Showing just 38k miles from new, it is sure to provide its new owner with many more years of top-down bliss.
