This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL was sold new and registered to the first owner in New York up until 1996 when it was brought to Maryland. Subsequent ownership brought the car to Florida and then Georgia up until present ownership. The car now shows 104,664 miles on the odometer. Finished in Arctic White (147) over Gray Leather (278), this R107 boasts original paintwork, trim, and leather. This roadster is powered by a 5.5-liter M117 V8 paired to a four-speed automatic transmission. Features on this example include a paint-matched removable hardtop, a new folding Navy soft top, an original Becker head unit, power windows, cruise control, central locking, and front facing fog lamps. Recent services include an oil change and an R134 conversion for the air conditioning. This 560SL is now being offered by the seller complete with manufacturer's literature, an original first aid kit, three keys, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.
The exterior is finished in factory-original, Arctic White (147) and is accented with a new Navy soft top and a matching original hardtop in Arctic White. The lower body cladding is paint matched as well and all glass remains original. The U.S. spec headlight housings are clear and front fog lights are mounted below the bumper. OEM chrome-finished bumper guards and trim pieces are all present and detailed in the gallery below. One small ding is noted in the center of the upper decklid and can be seen in the gallery as well.
Silver-finished 15″ Gullideckel alloy wheels measure 15x7 on all four corners and are shown with Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires with more than 80% tread remaining. An original full-size spare wheel and tire are included in the trunk.
The cabin is trimmed in original Gray Leather (278) across the seats, door cards, head rests, and armrest while original gray carpets remain across the floorboards and parcel shelf. On the parcel shelf, an original first aid kit and OEM storage rack is included. Burl Walnut veneer adorns the center console and dashboard showing minor cracking on the shifter surround. Interior features include an original leather interior, an original crack-free dashboard, automatic climate control, cruise control, central locking, and power windows. The original Becker Grand Prix head unit is installed and fully operational. Photos of the soft top storage compartment, soft top headliner, and top mechanicals have been included in the gallery and all show nicely.
Instrumentation includes a 170-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, and an analog odometer showing 104,664 miles with trip function. Additional gauges include fuel level, oil pressure, fuel economy, and an analog clock. The gauges are trimmed with chrome rings and feature electronic warning lights along the base of the cluster.
The 5.5-liter M117 V8 was rated at 227 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque when new and is paired with a 722.3 automatic four-speed transmission. Recent maintenance includes an oil service and an R134 conversion for the air conditioning. Detailed photos of the underbody can be seen in the gallery below.
This 560SL is now being offered by the seller complete with manufacturer's literature, an original first aid kit, a paint-matched hardtop, three keys, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.
Cleanliness is king. These are words to live by when selling (or hunting) R107’s. For all the examples we see with ill-fitting dash covers, remanufactured MB-Tex, and digital head units, there’s a lot to love about seeing a true survivor like this 1989 560SL. Moreover, we can’t get enough of these cars when they’re treated as though they never stopped being the crown jewel of the Mercedes showroom with preventative maintenance and endless detailing. While this car looks like it’s headed to a concours, we wouldn’t hesitate to semi-daily this example considering the condition and all-important R134 conversion. Given the presentation, we trust this car will end up with a driver who appreciates it for all the same reasons.
