This 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster was delivered new by Mercedes-Benz Porsche Audi of Melbourne, Florida in June of 2012 and is now located out of West Falls, New York by the selling dealer. This was a Mercedes-AMG production car and was AMG’s first go at building a vehicle from the ground up and was the first true successor to the 300SL Roadster and Gullwing. Power is provided by an AMG built and designed M159 V8 engine paired with a dual clutch transmission. Only about 4,000 SLS Roadsters were produced world wide during its entire production run. This Roadster is finished in Obsidian Black Metallic (197) over Black/Anthracite Exclusive Leather (501) and features a black power folding soft top. Notable factory options include AMG forged staggered width/diameter wheels, Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound, COMAND with Navigation, 7 speed dual clutch transmission, AIRSCARF, Bi-Xenon headlamps, and much more. In August of 2024, brake fluid was flushed, drive belts inspected, and an oil change was performed. This SLS Roadster shows a clean Carfax report with 14 service history records with an odometer that reads 9,986 miles and is offered by the selling dealer with factory literature, tool kit, jack, first aid kit, and a clean New York title.
Painted in Obsidian Black Metallic (197) the exterior features an aluminum body built by Magna Steyr with an aluminum spaceframe chassis. Exterior features include a power folding black fabric soft top with a three layer sound deadening design including magnesium armatures, adaptive Bi-Xenon headlamps with washer system, electric folding exterior mirrors, blind spot assist, Parktronic, and an electronically adjustable rear spoiler for added rear end stability. The seller states the car shows no history of paintwork. The Roadster got additional chassis support through the chassis rails along the rocker panels and cross bars under the windshield and behind the rear seats to eliminate any sort of handling compromises for it being a drop-top.
Staggered AMG forged 10-spoke wheels measure 19” front with 265/35 tires and 20” rear with 295/30 tires. The light forged wheels are wrapped in the original Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT tires with 2011 date codes. The AMG Adaptive Suspension can be adjusted via the button with the shock emblem in the cabin to regulate damping. Two-piece floating rotors show no corrosion and are stopped by four pistons calipers rear and six pistons calipers front which are painted in red with black AMG stenciling on the face. Underside photos show zero corrosion or wear on the suspension components.
The cabin is trimmed in Black/Anthracite Exclusive Leather (501) and accented with aluminum trim on the center console and door cards. Notable interior features include heated seats with adjustable upper and lower bolsters, a removable wind deflector, alcantara trim on the headliner, and AIRSCARF ventilated headrests. The 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system was a $6,400 option for this SLS AMG. Extended leather is seen on the dashboard, doors, and center console with deviated silver stitching. COMAND with Navigation sits between the two front vents and is controlled by a scroll wheel below the shift lever. Original black AMG loop floor mats are included.
Framed by a perforated black leather wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel, instrumentation includes an AMG-branded 240mph speedometer and a 9k-rpm tachometer, as well as fuel level and temperature gauges. The LCD center screen is controlled by the multifunction steering wheel. The odometer currently reads 9,986 miles.
Power comes from an aluminum, front-mid engine 6.2-liter M159 naturally aspirated V8 that is rated at 563 horsepower and 479 ft/lbs of torque which is shot through a carbon fiber driveshaft to the transaxle dual-clutch 7 speed transmission. The M159 is a heavily modified M156 that includes forged pistons, reinforced crankshaft bearings, high pressure oil pump that provides improved lubrication to ensure durability, a nearly 14-liter dry-sump oil system that ensures lubrication during sustained high speed cornering while allowing the engine to sit lower to reduce the center of gravity, revised intake system, fat trimming to the headers/exhaust system with equal length headers, slimming of the catalytic converters, lifter buckets with a reduced friction coating, enlarged valve opening cross-sections, and much more. The M159 is overall lighter with less rotational mass making this engine rev quicker and outputs more power with a top speed for the Roadster being 197-mph. Records on the Carfax show regular services with a brake fluid flush and oil change being done in August of 2024. Detailed undersides are shown in the gallery.

This is what we got when Mercedes-Benz unleashed the Affalterbach factory to fabricate a retro throwback to the 300SL. The story of this car is actually just bewildering and that makes this a special vehicle from a special moment in time. This was a damn-near 200-mph drop top with a transaxle dual-clutch and a naturally aspirated, high revving AMG hand-built V8 with later versions pushing out more than 600 horsepower without forced induction.
This SLS AMG sports low mileage with proof of a gentle life by the original tires – even on the rear. As fun as these are to drive, we’ve asked ourselves, “How does this have original rears?” We don’t know. Obsidian Black Metallic is beautiful and is like staring into the night sky in southern Utah. Plus the interior shows virtually no wear. The underside is so clean you could drink kartoffelsuppe out of the engine mount cups. This car had owners who drove the car with dignity and respect like it was a W126 S-Class. The good news is that they preserved it for the next owner to use and enjoy to its fullest. The C/R197 shows a crystal clear upward trajectory in value and fits the mold to become a collector car. Buy one now while they’re affordable. Like the Gullwing, they probably won’t stay like that for too long. History repeats itself in the collector car world.
