This 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL550 was sold new by Mercedes-Benz of South Bay out of California in April of 2014 and has since stayed in the state. This roadster is finished in Mars Red (590) over Silk Beige Nappa Leather (805) with power provided by a 4.7-liter bi-turbo V8 paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes a power-retractable hardtop with a vario glass roof, AMG styling package, bi-xenon headlights, climatized and massage seats with Airscarf, Keyless-Go, navigation, Parktronic, Active Park Assist, a rear-view camera, and illuminated door sills. The Carfax report shows consistent services since new, most of which were done at the dealer with a minor reported in 2019 on the rear left corner of the car. Most recently, the car received an annual inspection and oil change in the fall of 2024. This SL550 is now offered by the current dealer out of Benicia, California showing just under 42k miles with a Carfax report, 2 key fobs, and a clean California title.
The car is finished in Mars Red (590) paint and features sculpted bumper covers and side skirts as part of the AMG styling package. Additional equipment includes bi-xenon headlamps with Active Curve Illumination, LED driving lights, and side fender vents as well as front and rear sonar Parktronic sensors. The body and paint show without major blemish or damage and paint is reportedly original by the seller. The power folding glass hardtop is shown up and down in the gallery and exhibits typical paint fade on the gloss black C-pillar trim which is easily replaceable.
Original five-spoke 19″ AMG staggered wheels are wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus tires measuring 255/35 and 285/30. The tires show 2024 date codes. Braking is done by front and rear drilled rotors complete with ABS as standard and includes a splined safety lug bolt on each wheel. There are a few small scratches on the wheels photographed in the gallery.
The cabin is finished in Beige Nappa Leather (805) accented by Burred Walnut Veneer across the door cards, steering wheel, and center console. Amenities include a power-raising roll bar, heated and ventilated multi-contour seats with Airscarf and massage function, Keyless-Go, a rear-view camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Homelink universal garage door opener, and the original COMAND infotainment system featuring hard drive based navigation, bluetooth connectivity, and Harman Kardon sound. Minimal wear is shown in the cabin including door cards and seat bolsters. Mercedes-Benz replaced some interior speakers in 2019.
Dual gauge binnacles house a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and a digital odometer showing just under 42k miles. Ancillary gauges show coolant temperature and fuel level while the LCD display shows trip, media, navigation, and cluster settings through the use of multifunction steering wheel buttons. The steering wheel is wrapped in brown leather mixed with burred walnut and a stitched leather airbag.
The 4.7-liter M278 bi-turbo V8 was factory-rated at 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission with a manual shift mode that can be operated via paddles on the steering wheel or through the speedshift option on the shift lever. Service history is reported consistently on the Carfax showing regular dealer and independent visits. A 30k-mile service was performed in December of 2017 by Mercedes-Benz of Rocklin. Consistent annual services at the dealership on the Carfax show the car was well taken care of during its ownership with fluids being replaced regularly by the owner following factory intervals.
The Carfax report shows a minor on the rear left corner in 2019 and lists linear mileage updates since new along with documented service hits and safety checks by the dealership with some pings by independent shops. This SL550 is now offered by the selling dealer out of Benicia, California showing just under 42k miles with manufacturer’s literature, a Carfax report, 2 key fobs, and a clean California title.

The R231 SL was praised by auto journalists when it was released as it was a huge leap in quality, driving dynamics, suspension, and power over the outgoing R230 which had been getting long in the tooth. The bi-turbo M278 is a powerhouse of an engine that feels like it’s nipping at the heels of an AMG powerplant. These cars are rocketships when you step on it. The chassis was strengthened and featured an aluminum space-frame design that made these feel like air cooled 911s in solidity. With the folding hardtop, Airscarf, and kidney boiling heated seats, Mercedes-Benz made a car you could comfortably drive with the top down during freezing cold winter months. This SL550 is specced in peak ‘80s R107 color combination of Fire opal Red (the new version of Signal Red) over Beige. There’s not much to hate about a red V8 powered SL. Paired with low miles, tons of dealer service notes, and an interior that shows basically no wear, we have a hard time arguing buying something else over this car for those seeking a modern roadster.
