@TheAMGKit - Most of the smaller-engined 123s were sold as taxis and private cars for use in places like Spain, Portugal, Japan, Hong Kong & SE Asia, S America, and the Middle East - where speed was a non-issue. If I needed a car that I knew would last forever and lived in a place like Lisbon or Tokyo - and didn't want to go for an EV - This would be perfectly adequate.

" Maybe for the European cars - but the US cars for 1980 were strangled down to 160 hp in order to achieve better fuel economy than the years prior when the 4.5l V8s produced 180 hp
This car has a 7 speed gearbox - not a 5 speed, as in the AMG E63 models. It's even stated on the window sticker as such.
