This 1975 Mercedes-Benz 450SL roadster is finished in Byzantine Gold (422) over Tobacco (106) leather. The car was acquired by the seller out of long-term ownership in 2020 and has undergone thorough mechanical reconditioning. The car is powered by a less-restrictive 1973 4.5-liter V8 backed by a three-speed automatic transmission. The engine has 61k miles logged. The recent mechanical refurbishment included replacement of the engine as well as a thorough list of new replacement mechanical components detailed below to make this a reliable and strong running example. Now showing 66k miles, this R107 is offered with both the hardtop and soft top, receipts for the recent refurbishment, as well as those from prior ownership, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The body and matching hardtop were delivered from the factory in Byzantine Gold (422) and the current finish is believed to be original. The seller notes some minor bubbling under the paint can be seen behind the rear wheel wells along with other notable items shown in detail in the gallery below. Exterior features include a brown soft top, yellow front fog lights, and chrome brightwork on the bumpers, grill, and window trim. The convertible soft top folds manually to stow beneath the bodywork and close up photos of the paint condition are viewable in the gallery below.

Steel 14″ wheels wear chrome full covers with body-color centers and are mounted with new Nexen AH5 radial tires measuring 215/70 on all four corners. During the car’s recent refurbishment, the car received new brake pads and rotors along with new front calipers and brake lines. Additionally, new front and rear sway bar links were installed and both left and right tie rod assemblies.

The original seats are trimmed in pleated Tobacco (106) leather with textured center inserts. Matching Mahogany carpets line the floors along with leather door cards, and a set of matching carpet floor mats are included in the sale. Amenities include power windows, central locking, an aftermarket Pioneer head unit, and Behr air conditioning. The A/C and heat work properly and the car recieved new A/C belts, reciever drier, and freon. The seller notes there is a minor tear in the passenger seat near the seat belt buckle. All electronics are reported to be in working order by the seller.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,700-rpm redline, and an analog clock. The six-digit analog odometer now shows 66,895 miles.

The 4.5-liter M117 V8 features a single overhead camshaft per cylinder bank and Bosch fuel injection which produced 190 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque when new. The current engine has 61k documented miles and was swapped from a 1973 450SL by the current owner. The original engine was locked up upon acquiring the car. A three-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels.

The MB Market Insights

The R107 is one of Mercedes’ best known and longest living chassis designs. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the R107 was in continuous production for 17 years until 1989 when the last 560sl was produced. While the R107 underwent several powertrain changes and minor cosmetic updates, the platform remained largely unchanged throughout the run making it one of the most iconic MBs of all time. These long nose roadsters elicit immediate nostalgic reactions and offer tremendous driving enjoyment for a very reasonable price. While prices for low-mile 560sl examples have skyrocketed in recent years, the 380SL & 450SL variants have remained comparatively affordable while offering virtually all of the ownership enjoyment of their larger displacement brethren. This specific example benefits from a very long list of mechanical reconditioning which should prove very rewarding for the next owner. The color palette of the 70’s was unique and bold such as this example finished in a lesser seen Byzantine Gold which always attracts enthusiasts attention on the road. These are wonderful collector MBs that can be enjoyed frequently with very few headaches or major mechanical concerns, and we expect to see this 450SL on the road for many more years to come.

All parts listed are NEW with the exception of the engine, exhaust manifolds and wiring harness. Also, a good detail should get a lot of the scratches out, particularly on the hood.
