This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Sand Beige Metallic (DB467) over a Cognac MB-tex interior and power is provided by a 2.8L M130 inline-six engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes a color-matched Pagoda hardtop, hardtop stand, hardtop winch and hoist, a brown soft top, 16” Centra wheels currently mounted, an extra set of 14″ steel wheels with paint-matched hubcaps, four-wheel disc brakes, an aftermarket Retrosound head unit with Bluetooth, and an OEM ski rack for the hardtop. The SL was acquired by the current owner in 2014 from the first, long-time owner in Norfolk, Virginia. Records included with this car document ownership, a recent repaint, refurbishment and recent servicing including overhauled air conditioning, an overhauled ignition system, a mechanical refresh, electrical refresh, and comprehensive tune up in 2022. This W113 SL shows 57k miles and is now offered on consignment by the selling dealer with tools, complete manufacturer’s literature, a data card, comprehensive records, a collection of accessories, and clean Virginia title in the current owner’s name.
The exterior is finished in the original color of Sand Beige Metallic (DB467) as per the data card and the body received a very high-quality repaint in June of 2022 with records included in the sale. All brightwork reportedly shows well without any flaws. Exterior features include a color-matched and original removable Pagoda hardtop, brown folding soft top, a driver-side mirror, dual polished exhaust outlets, and original glass.
16” polished Centra wheels are mounted on the SL with original center caps showing gold Mercedes-Benz emblems. Goodyear Eagle tires measuring 205/55 are shown mounted with 2014 date codes displayed. An additional set of steel 14″ wheels with paint-matched hubcaps in Sand Beige Metallic (DB467) are included in the sale. A full-size spare is located under a vinyl cover in the trunk along with a tool roll. Braking is handled by discs at all four corners.
The cabin is trimmed in Cognac MB-Tex with matching door panels, dashboard, and Cognac loop carpeting. Amenities include three-point seatbelts, a locking glovebox, and an aftermarket Retrosound head unit with Bluetooth. The cabin air conditioning is a dealer-installed Frigiking unit recently refurbished by Bud’s Benz of Atlanta, Georgia. The seats show light wear along with some creasing. The interior of the brown soft top shows some discoloration but presents well and folds neatly.
The black two-spoke steering wheel features a painted horn ring and frames VDO instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 57k miles which is believed to be original to the body and chassis.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six was notably replaced under warranty at 15k miles by Mercedes-Benz resulting in 42k miles on the current engine. The ignition system has been upgraded to a Pertronix Solid State Ignition and power was rated from the factory at 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Under current ownership the mechanical systems and all electrical equipment has been overhauled by Abacus racing of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Most recently, the car received a complete tune up in 2022 consisting of an oil service, new spark plugs, fuel pump replacement, fuel filter service, and fluid check at 56k miles.
