This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL shows Illinois registration from new and 68k miles on the odometer. The car was reportedly a one-owner example prior to the seller's acquisition. Finished in Pearl Grey Metallic (122) over Blue Leather (262), power is provided by a 4.2-liter V8 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Equipment includes power-adjustable front seats with memory, a power sliding sunroof, automatic climate control, cruise control, headlamp washers, and a refurbished Becker Grand Prix head unit. Recent service includes all new drive belts, new tires, new battery, two new Bosch fuel pumps, an AC recharge, new air filter, differential oil flush, new spark plugs, new guide rod bearings, and an oil change. This 1989 420SEL is now offered for sale in Illinois by the current owner with the original manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, spare tire and tool kit, a clean Carfax report and a clean Illinois title.
This long-wheelbase sedan is finished in Pearl Grey Metallic (122) with contrasting lower body cladding separated by a thin chrome beltline which continues to the front and rear bumpers. Exterior features include a power tilt/slide sunroof, an automatic antenna, headlamp wipers, a heated rear window and a power passenger-side mirror. The seller notes some rock chips commensurate with mileage and a full paint corrrection was performed in preparation for the sale.
15” Gullideckel wheels are fitted with a set of new Continental Control Contact A/S tires measuring 205/65. A full-size spare can be found mounted below the trunk floor along with the original tool kit and factory jack. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard equipment with ABS. The car recently received a new passenger front brake caliper.
The cabin is trimmed in Blue Leather (262) and features matching blue carpets, floor mats, and a dashcap. Zebrano wood trim accents the center console, dashboard and door panels. The wood trim has been previously replaced around the shifter. Both front seats are fully power operated and feature two-position memory for both driver and passenger. Additional interior equipment includes automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, and an original Becker radio which has been recently refurbished by Becker. The AC was recharged in preparation for the sale.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames analog instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, economy, coolant temperature and oil pressure. A digital outside temperature sensor can be seen mounted centrally along the row of warning lights. The six-digit odometer currently shows just over 68k miles from new.
This W126 is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 engine which is factory rated for 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. In preparation for the sale, the seller has installed two new Bosch fuel pumps, new air filter, a new battery, new tires, an AC recharge, differential oil flush, all new drive belts, and performed an oil & fliter change. Service records are included in the sale. March 29, 2025 update: new spark plugs have also been installed along with new guide rod bearings.
This 420SEL was purchased by its first owner in Illinois where it has remained since new. The Carfax report shows no accident or damage reports. This W126 is now offered for sale by the current owner with the original manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, a clean Carfax report and a clean Illinois title.

@Dreddish83 yes you would be paying whatever the buyers premium is on top of your final Bid.
May I ask so whatever bid you put in for example if I put $8000 in on a bid and I win it. I would be paying that $8000 +4 .5% of that $8000 as a buyers fee on top of that right?
@GoBoGo Thank you ! I like Michelin but the other brands mentioned as long as they are name brands that I have used I am ok with. Now maybe if I were restoring a concourse car that would be a different story =)
@CKRickhouse The car will be selling today
This is an absolute time machine and a beauty! Meanwhile, some tire snob is itching to complain that the tires aren't Michelin but I digress (unless they are some no-names, Michelin, Conti, Pirellis are fine but that's me--though admittedly I too prefer Michelins in most cases). As a side note, @ckrickhouse I'm betting there is a reserve (unless an auction states 'no reserve' there usually is) and they can't (per MB and other auction sites rules) tell you the base and they really shouldn't. If you are playing poker, you're certainly not going to share your cards ; ) GLWTA, in a word: handsome!
Is the there a reserve bid amount for this car, or will it sell today for the highest amount when the time ends?
Yes it was just recharged and is working
AC good?
@dean_Laumbach if you are 6 ft 5 this car has more than enough room to drive comfortably which is a huge plus ! I too despite the modern tech prefer to hop into one of these timeless classic masterpieces and enjoy the simplicity of the drive without any tech distractions. Thank you !
Its hard not to love the W126. Classic Sacco Era styling, exceptional comfort, safety, and the drive quality is better than most of the luxury cars built today. A car that was built to last forever. The ergonomics for the driver is exceptional and the simplicity of the interior controls is from a long gone era. No silly neon mood lighting, fragrances from the vents, and real old school Zebrano Wood !!! I am not say that I don't have an appreciation for the more modern S-Class (W140/W220/W221 and W222), but I love the W126 for the fact its has none of the more modern convenience and suspension advancements that wreaks havoc on your bank account when things break. These are such a great value. Nice clean well maintained examples are well worth the price on entry. Best of luck !!! Dean
Interesting color combination! GLWTA!
Photos of the stamped service booklet entries have been added to the gallery.
Underbody photos have been added to the gallery. Additional service added includes new spark plugs installed along with new guide rod bearings.
@Wonderkey6 it is an excellent driver condition car , it gets a lot of looks you don't see them on the road as often as you used too. The previous owner took exceptional care of it since new. I submitted undercarriage photos yesterday MB market should be uploading them. Thank you !
The car looks good for its age! I am interested in the undercarriage photos too? Thank you.

$7,500 bid placed by @W140MD
New front guide rod bearings as well as new spark plugs and a passenger front caliper were recently installed.
@classic4x4 Ill try to get some better shots for you today or tomorrow !
@youngclassicamg Though you don't have access to a lift, well lit undercarriage photos from all angles with the car on the ground would be appreciated. Also, a set of ramps are cheap and so is going to a local garage and paying them to put the car up in a list for a few minutes while you snap a few photos. Thank you.
in addition to the Bosch fuel pumps being replaced I replaced all of the crush washers to those lines as well as the lower hardline running from pump to pump with an oem Benz line as well as a new oem benz fuel filter.
@Dolsey01 thank you for checking out the listing . Im happy to setup a ppi for any interested parties or show the car to those that want to see the car prior to auction end. I do not have access to a lift. From what I can see only typical suspension surface corrosion is visible which can happen in any state from moisture. The car looks to have been spared and stored indoors for the winters.
$5,670 bid placed by @classic4x4
Beautiful example. Full undercarriage pictures on a lift would really help boost confidence for out of state buyers, especially since this has been in Illinois it's whole life. If that is not possible, can you comment on any signs of rust?
$5,420 bid placed by @Mrbenz
@JTBshaw thank you !
Wow! This is a very nice example of old school class. Any person selling vehicles online should take note of how thorough this listing is.
Thank you for checking out my auction. This is an excellent rare color combo car that has a stack of records and has been cared for its entire life. The car was a single owner car prior to my ownership. Everything operated as intended on the car . Recent maintenance performed included new drive belts, new oil filler cap seal, power steering fluid service, dif fluid service, new continental tires, passenger front caliper replaced, all rotors and pods are hardly used, Transmission shifts well, and the engine runs strong. This is an excellent driver quality car that is sure to turn necks with its immense presence on the road! I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. Good luck !
