This 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is 1 of only 500 40th Anniversary Editions produced and comes finished in Crimson Metallic (019) over a Parchment Exquisite Leather (265) interior. This roadster was sold new by Smail Mercedes-Benz of Greensburg, PA for $91,795 on New Year’s Day of 1997. The current owner acquired the car on The MB Market in January 2022 and has kept it part of their private collection. Power comes from a 5.0-liter M119 V8 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a Black convertible top, removable hardtop, 17″ Sport Evo II wheels, power-adjustable and heated seats, and a factory stereo with a trunk-mounted OEM six-CD changer. Service in 2021 included the addition of H&R lowering springs, a new A/C temperature switch and recharge, rebuilt top hydraulic cylinders, replacement of the convertible top module, new shifter linkage bushings, new serpentine belts, and an oil and filter service. Within the last year the car has received new spark plugs, new front shocks, ball joints, and an oil change. This R129 now shows less than 63k miles and is offered by the owner with the help of the seller in Florida with the original window sticker, a body-color removable hardtop, original 40th Anniversary floormats, manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, two keys, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.
The 40th Anniversary Edition SL was offered in only two colors, with this example being finished in Crimson Metallic (019). Exterior features include fog lights, headlight wipers, fender vents, and a single windshield wiper. The body-colored hardtop has a minor dent along the roof line and areas of touch up paint. The top hydraulics were reportedly rebuilt by TopHydraulics in Oregon proir to the owner's acquisition and the convertible top operates as designed. The paint is believed to be all original and detailed images of the exterior are provided in the photo gallery below.
The 17″ Sport Evo II wheels were part of the 40th Anniversary Package equipment and show almost no wear or rash on the faces or lips with the exception of a small area on the front left wheel. All four wheels are wrapped in Falekn Ziex ZE950 A/S 245/45 tires which were mounted in 2023. The car is fitted with H&R springs which provide a sportier driving experience and slightly lower ride height. New front shocks and struts were installed in 2024 along with lower front ball joints.
The cabin features power-adjustable and heated seats upholstered in Parchment Exquisite Leather (265), while chestnut wood trim accents the center console, steering wheel, and door panels. A new center console slider button and release spring were installed in 2021. Equipment includes automatic climate control, a factory stereo with a trunk-mounted six-CD changer, cruise control, and a deployable roll bar. The seller states that the passenger vanity mirror cover and the opening dash compartment were repaired in 2022. Some creasing is noted on the driver's seat leather as well as wear on the door touch points around the seat controls. The original "40th Anniverary Roadster" floor mats are included and pictured in the gallery.
The instrument cluster contains a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and an analog clock along with gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and instant economy. The digital odometer indicates approximately 62,750 miles, nearly 2,500 of which have been added by the current owner since 2022.
The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was rated at 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque when new and is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. @Jhoagg Nothing really, just the rear canvas bottom edge was folded upwards.Car looks the business in that color, nicely lowered and with those Evo wheels. Handling must be improved too. Several somewhat surprising cosmetic wear items and imperfections show up clearly in pics. Florida heat/light getting to the main instrument dash surround is not surprising. What is with right rear soft top fit? The right rear hard top fit looks much better.
