After nearly a two decade hiatus, Mercedes unveiled their new inline-six engine, the M256, which was first introduced to the US market through the CLS450 before being tuned by AMG and fitted to various models including the GLE53. While an inline-six traditionally presents a unique packaging challenge, Mercedes was able to reduce the length of their engine by eliminating the front accessories through the use of a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This 48-volt system functions as a starter, alternator and electric motor capable of adding up to 184 lb-ft of torque when needed. The combination of an inherently balanced inline-six and the 48-volt system results in smooth power delivery with plenty of low-end torque.
