Many thanks to all that placed bids & comments, and to TheMBmarket!! I'm sorry we couldn't make a deal and I commend you for being willing to buy the car unseen or driven, something I've never done, and I can understand your reluctance to go too deep in the pockets. I was as open and honest as possible with all I see and know about this car in trying to answer your questions. For all the MB 16V owners, and to those who may someday be, you'll never get tired of driving these cars be it on track or street, plus the never-ending thumbs up and positive comments from all who see it - young and old! Go Mercedes!!!!!
Stuttgart_steel It's possible??.... I have never checked the date codes. I only looked at the treads for tire wear and dry rot when I purchased the car and saw no red flags. Although the car rides nice and the tires passed NYS Inspection, a new set of tires would definitely enhance the ride. I am leaving the tire & rim size decision to be made by the new owner since the 15" stock rims offer very little in tire selection. There are only 3 companies I'm aware of that still make the stock 205/55 - 15"
quantumorbit I'm selling the car because - pending that it sells.... I have the opportunity to buy a 1986 16V Track Car in pearl black that was built specifically for racing on track, and I don't have garage space to house both cars. Also, as I mentioned I already have a 16V for 35 year that's in outstanding condition. The car in auction was originally purchased in mind as an investment car down the road as the values are increasing, but when the opportunity to buy the track car was presented, I decided the track car would be more suitable for what I like to do. As you know, that's what the 16V was built for. I apologize, and wish I had the time to take more photos of the undercarriage for you and others, but my work schedule makes that impossible to do before the auction ends on Wednesday. Arrangements can be made for anyone who want's and is able to see the car in person. Thanks for your interest & questions
Stutgart_steel Its my pleasure! Amazingly, there are no cracks at all - or even beginnings of cracks on the dashboard. The dashboards on these cars are notorious for a single vertical crack usually dead center of the dash and the instrument cluster (as my other 16V developed over the years), but this one is clean and uncracked.... tempting me to swap them out LOL!!! Feel free to ask any questions you have on the car... it's no problem. Thanks!
@stuttgart_steel Unfortunately I do not have any more photos of the undercarriage. All photos displayed were taken by the BaT photographer and I didn't have access to a lift at that time for better shots. There is no visible rust on the car body other than the bubbling seen behind the left front wheel flare. I've been a Mercedes owner of several cars from the 1970's & 80's for over 35 years and your concerns about rust are certainly valid ones!!! Mercedes of this period are prone to rust in the wheel opening, fenders, trunk & undercarriage, and can quickly become a money pit to repair...and may not be worth the investment. However, this 16V being auctioned, is one of two identical 1986 16V's I own. I've owned the other 16V for the past 35 years since buying it from the original owner and it now has 234K miles and looks & runs like new! My Mechanic & I inspected the undercarriage of this car thoroughly when it was on the lift being serviced and found no areas of any significant rusting that would require attention or repair. Naturally, a 38-year-old car would show some signs of its age unless restored, like the sway bars, chassis ext..... but all in all this is a clean car in every category - otherwise I would have never purchased it myself knowing that rust is a big problem. I'm welcome to a mechanics inspection at your arrangements if you'd like. Getting the car back to my mechanic in order to use the lift for better picture would be very difficult due to my work schedule. Thanks for your interest & comments
W123_280ce. Since owning the car in August 2023, there has been no need for a compression test or ac leak test. The engine runs great with no lack of pep or power, and the ac blew ice cold last summer and presently, still blowing cold. Sight glass runs clear showing no shortage of Freon.
@wavydave (5) The only pictures I have of the undercarriage are already posted above. I'll try to get you some additional photos of the areas you're looking for within the next couple of days.
