These StopTech Trophy Big Brake Kit have been designed to fit on a Mercedes-Benz 124.036 E500/500E upping the size over the stock brakes. Included in the kit are two StopTech brake calipers, two caliper brackets, two brake rotors, four brake pads, and two stainless steel brake lines with hardware. The items in this listing are new and have never been mounted to a car. Note that upping the wheel size to 18-inches must happen for this kit to fit. This rare big brake kit is now offered by the seller out of Santa Barbara, California and the seller is willing to ship worldwide.
This StopTech Trophy Big Brake Kit has been designed to fit onto a 124.036 Mercedes-Benz E500/500E. These cars were originally fitted with 300x28mm front rotors with mid 1993 and up .036 W124s getting 320x30mm rotors. Stock parts were pulled from the R129 500SL/SL500 where the non-V8 cars got 124 specific parts. This kit should also fit a 124.034 400E/E420 as they share the same bub, knuckled, and steering arm as the .036 cars though modifications to the splash shield will have to be made by replacing it with a R129 part number.
Benefits of the StopTech Trophy Big Brake Kit is to provide better heat dissipation, faster braking response, better pedal feel under high speed braking maneuvers, and less noise/vibration. The brake calipers are finished in anodized silver paint with painted StopTech branding on the face. StopTech uses a filly forged two-piece opposed piston caliper design with four pistons in each caliper. The brand is rated for the lowest amount of caliper deflection (bending) and the patented bolt-in bridge promises to stop distortion. StopTech’s R&D department ensures the multi-piston calipers will provide even clamping force to prevent pad taper seen in lesser big brake kits where the top most piston grabs harder than the bottom.
The 355x32mm two-piece slotted rotors are a massive upgrade over the stock 294x25 124.034 rotors and the 300x28 to 320x30 124.036 rotors. These rotors are patented with a design called AeroRotors which push more air into the curved vanes which widen at the trailing edge of them. With a larger brake rotor, it takes more energy to heat soak them. With the two-piece design, you get lower unsprug weight on each corner, lower risk of warping, and better heat dissipation plus they won’t transfer heat as easily into the wheel bearings and steering knuckle.
Also included in the auction are hard anodized 6061-T6 billet aluminum mounting brackets with stainless steel studs. To pair with that are upgraded stainless steel brake lines to replace the OEM rubber lines. This provides a more consistent brake feel as heat is driven into the brake fluid, which would cause the rubber lines to expand, producing a soft pedal under performance driving situations. Once upgrading, it would be wise to flush the brake system with a high-temperature DOT4 brake fluid. Four StopTech performance street pads are included. These pads will have a snappier grabbing point high in the pedal and are low dust. These are robust for high heat applications and are good for light track use.
The Trophy series kits are higher performing and lighter weight than the traditional StopTech kit. Each Trophy Sport kit includes a fully forged aluminum caliper with a hard anodized finish along with dust boots, and leak/pressure tested to 2500 psi parts. This, combined with more aggressive brake pad compounds result in a 20% lighter weight and higher performing brake system.
If you have ever pushed a 400E/E420 or a 500E/E500 on a backroad, then you will know the pain of a soft pedal, hot brakes, and steering wheel wobble as the rotors warp. With these cars, it doesn’t take that long for these issues to arise, even on a 35-MPH Appalachian mountain road when you’re pushing the car. The W124 is a family sedan designed in the early ‘80s. Mercedes-Benz and AMG hotrodded the hell out of these in period and the brakes were always a point of weakness because these were heavy cars out of the box. Even a dialed in E500 will smoke its brakes almost immediately if you are past 7/10s on a twisty road – while they are a Mercedes-Benz assembled by Porsche… it’s just not a Porsche. This StopTech Trophy Big Brake Kit is extra enticing for those looking to extract more performance out of their V8 W124. And to clarify, we are not talking about the standard big brake kit from StopTech; this is the top tier Trophy kit. Aftermarket support for these cars is uncommon, so when something like this pops up, you just buy it. These are special-order only on the internet and we’re afraid if you add one of these kits to your cart, you’ll get an email saying it's actually NLA after you press buy.
