This 1963 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 404 began life as a Swiss Army vehicle before being imported to the United States and shows 23k kilometers (~10k miles). The truck has been repainted in black with black vinyl upholstery and is powered by a 2.2-liter inline-six paired with a 6-speed manual transmission which can drive either two or four wheels. Features include an enclosed cabin, steel cargo boxes, a hinged tailgate, front and rear portal axles and front and rear hitch receivers. A new battery has recently been fitted by the seller. This 1963 Unimog 404 is now offered for sale by the current owner with a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
The 10.0-20 steel wheels retain their original green finish and are wrapped in a set of Nitto Mud Grappler Extreme Terrain tires with 2007 and 2008 date codes. A full size spare is fitted to the tailgate. Portal axles are fitted front and rear providing additional ground clearance. Approach and departure angles are listed at 45 degrees with a maximum payload of 1.5 tons. The seller notes that the brake system has a slow leak.
The cabin includes two vinyl-wrapped seats with three-point seatbelts for driver and passenger. French and German labels adorn the interior switchgear and shift pattern. The steel floor pans are painted black and have been fitted with a set of black rubber floor mats. The seller reports that the parking brake has been removed.
A three-spoke steering wheel fronts an array of switches and gauges including a fuel pressure gauge, coolant temperature and a 100 km/h speedometer. Top speed in 6th gear is listed as 95 km/h. The five-digit odometer shows 23k kilometers, approximately 14k miles, and is believed to be accurate.
The 2.2-liter gasoline-powered M180 inline-six is rated for 82 horsepower and 117 lb-ft of torque. The synchronized manual transmission includes six forward gears and two reverse gears with power sent to either two or four wheels selected by a transfer case. The seller notes that a new battery was fitted in November 2023.
The truck was acquired by the seller in June 2021 with 1,700 miles subsequently added. This 1963 Unimog 404 is now offered for sale by the current owner in Bulverde, Texas with a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.

The Unimog: A German name which translates to ‘Universally applicable motorized machine for agriculture.' While not particularly catchy, its descriptive name is quite fitting as the applications for the Unimog were quite diverse covering agriculture, heavy industry, offroading and everything in between. With the recent rise in popularity of overlanding, these capable trucks have become the prime choice for off-road enthusiasts. The extreme approach and departure angles, in combination with the additional ground clearance afforded by the portal axles, make the Unimog nearly unbeatable when it comes to navigating difficult terrain. This Swiss Army example may be spartan in its features, but offers all the right bones for an overland or offroad build.
