This 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG is number 64 of 150 examples built that started life as an SL600 before receiving extensive modifications from AMG when new. Finished in Special Order Sapphire Black (009) over Exclusive Mushroom Leather (565), power is provided by an AMG-tuned 7.1-liter M120 V12 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Factory equipment includes a panormaric hardtop, two-piece AMG monoblock wheels, xenon headlamps, remote central locking, heated seats, rear kinder seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and ADS suspension with adjustable ride height and damping. Additional modifications from AMG include a high-performance steering wheel, signed ashtray cover, dual-exit chrome exhaust tips, 300km/h gauges, and a Burl Walnut interior trim. The car was also sent to BRABUS by the original owner and received metal flared fenders and a Brembo big brake kit. A full service in preparation for the sale includes rebuilt top hydraulics, a flushing of all fluids, new spark plugs, new catalytic converter, new hydraulic spring accumulators, and much more. Japanese service history is included with the car along with a stamped service booklet and R129 AMG-specific manuals. Now with 93,843 kilometers (~58k miles), this SL70 AMG is offered for sale in Germany with the R129 AMG original manufacturer’s literature, AMG stamped engine block, original AMG data sheet, both remote keys and a clean Japanese title with accompanying export documents.
The exterior is finished in Sapphire Black (009) which was special ordered and believed to be 1 of 1 in this color. The car features a paint-matched removable panoramic hardtop and a power-folding black fabric soft top, both of which were factory optioned when new. The top hydraulic cylinders for the electric tops were rebuilt in 2024 along with a new soft top control unit. AMG body styling includes a sculpted front air dam with mesh intakes, extended side skirts, and a sculpted rear bumper. The front and rear fenders were widened by BRABUS under the original owner's care when new. The seller had both sides of the car repainted in 2024 to correct chips and light scratches from normal use over the years. Exterior features include xenon headlamps, front fog lights, heated and power-adjustable door mirrors, remote central locking and dual-exit AMG exhaust tips. The factory V12 badges remain mounted on the fenders while "SL70 AMG" badges can be found mounted on the trunk lid. The exterior is in good condition showing no signs of damage or rust.
Factory optioned 2-piece 18” AMG monoblock wheels are fitted with new Continental ContiSportContact tires measuring 245/40 and 275/35 respectively. The wheels were professionally refinished along with refreshed suspension including new hydraulic spring accumulators all around. The standard Adaptive Damping System uses hydropneumatic shock absorbers to control both ride height and stiffness. The original owner had a BRABUS-branded big brake kit by Brembo installed along with the widened fenders.
The seats are trimmed in Mushroom Multi-tone Leather (565) which extends to the door panels and also includes rear kinder seats. Burl Walnut wood trim lines the center console, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and instrument cluster. Interior modifications include a signed AMG ashtray cover, AMG gauge cluster, AMG door sills, an AMG wood/leather steering wheel, and a wood-finished arm rest on each door, center console, and courtesy light surround. Interior appointments include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and power-adjustable seats with three-position memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an MB radio with a CD player. The front seats fold forward to provide access to the rear kinder seats.
The AMG steering wheel features burl wood grips and "AMG" on the horn pad. AMG instrumentation includes a 300-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock and gauges for fuel level, economy, coolant temperature and oil pressure. Digital instrumentation includes an outside temperature sensor, a trip meter and the odometer which currently shows just under 93,843 kilometers, approximately 58k miles, from new.
As with all SL70 examples, this R129 originally featured a 6.0-liter M120 V12 and was destined from the factory to receive the increased displacement to 7,055cc by AMG. The 7.1-liter V12 is tuned to produce 489 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. A numbered AMG engine stamp on the block identifies this car as number 64 of the reported 150 SL70’s produced along with the upgraded displacement. Beginning in 2024, the car underwent a full service totalling 16,700 Euro with invoices provided. Service included a flushing of all fluids, new spark plugs, rebuilt top hydraulic cylinders, soft top control unit, new tires, new catalytic converter, new hydraulic spring accumulators, new steering components, AC service, and a new catalytic converter. Receipts from 2024 are provided in the gallery.
Underbody photos are provided by the seller. A fully custom stainless steel exhaust is mated to the original AMG tips and provides a more aggressive exhaust note without being unnecessarily loud according to the seller.

Beautyful example. I have a 1997 SL600 and use it regularly, but some better stopping power and more pulling power really make these more usable, collectable and desirable than a new SL/comparable. Forget the new car tech it's all outdated in a year anyways and this will be around 30 years from now while anything new will most likely be recycled.
This is absolutely EPIC! Incredible spec, I'm dying for this one.
