This mid-merger AMG sedan is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744U) and features an AMG-specific front spoiler, side skirts, and rear apron. Additional features include fog lights, a glass sunroof with tilt function, factory smoked tail lights, and AMG-branded dual exhaust tips. The front bumper still retains the AMG badging affixed to the lower center and the seller states that all paint appears to be original. There is reportedly no rust anywhere on the car including the underbody. One blemish is noted with specificity on the hood and displayed in the gallery below. Original AMG engine builder stickers are present on the rear window and ashtray cover as seen in the gallery.
Staggered 17″ AMG Monoblock wheels wear Michelin tires measuring 225/45 in the front and 245/40 in the rear. The C36 AMG features a quicker steering ratio than contemporary C-Class models, along with stiffer anti-roll bars and shocks. Additionally, the C36 wears front brakes from the V12-powered SL600 and rears from the V8-powered E420 from the factory. The front and rear brake rotors and pads have bene recently replaced under current ownership.
The cabin features seats trimmed in Black leather (201A) and is accented with burl walnut trim on the dashboard, doors, and center console. Cracks can be seen in the wood veneer, especially around the window switches beneath the shifter. AMG-specific seats, gear shifter, and steering wheel help to set apart the C36 from its non-AMG brethren. Amenities include power-adjustable and heated front seats, automatic climate control, JDM KORO checkered floor mats, a CD changer, cruise control, and an aftermarket Pioneer head unit. The headliner remains intact with no sagging. The seller notes that the turn signals are intermittently inoperable but has not diagnosed the potential relay or fuse issue.
The black wood and leather steering wheel fronts AMG-branded gauges consisting of a 260-km speedometer and 7k-rpm tachometer, along with gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The digital odometer indicates 63k kilometers (~39k miles), approximately 2,400 (~1,500 miles) of which were added by the seller over the last two years.
The AMG-built 3.6-liter DOHC, 24-valve, inline-six was factory-rated at 276 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque. These engines began as C280’s which were then disassembled and reassembled by AMG with new forged aluminum pistons, bored cylinder, and increased crankshaft throw for a total 3.6-liters of displacement. Additionally, the cylinder head is computer-ported to increase airflow. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a factory differential with Anti-Slip Regulation.
This C36 AMG is now offered by the seller with manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.
A walkaround video is viewable below.
The C36 AMG was a huge stepping stone for Mercedes-Benz. As the first factory-produced AMG-tuned car ever offered, the C36 was developed in collaboration between Mercedes and AMG, formerly two independent entities. This mid-merger AMG was offered with the same factory warranty from Mercedes-Benz while also providing impressive performance from the otherwise civilian W202. Not only was the car significantly faster with the 3.6L engine, it also felt nimble and sporty thanks to a quicker steering ratio and stiffer anti-roll bars and shocks. As somewhat of a partsbin special at the time, the C36 also received SL600 front brakes and E420 rear brakes. In true AMG fashion, it also looked the part with a sculpted body kit which strongly resembles the design cues from other pre-merger AMG kits. It’s an understatement to say the monoblock wheels have become iconic today and highly sought after. Only 1,018 C36’s were produced for the North American market, approximately 440 of which are 1995 model year examples making this a rare commodity. Clean, unmodified, and low-mileage examples have become increasingly more difficult to locate and values have consistently been on the rise as a result. Still, these early W202 AMGs offer immense value and collectibility.
