This 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) over Grey (248) leather and is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It was first registered in Houston, TX and has remained there throughout its entire life. Service in 2018 included the replacement of all hydraulic top cylinders, replacement of all cam oiler tubes, new timing chain tensioners and replacement of the valve cover gaskets. The front struts and ball joints were replaced in 2019. This R129 shows just 70k miles from new and is offered by the current owner in Houston, Texas with a clean Carfax report and a clean Texas title.
The car is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) and features the desirable SL1 AMG Sport package which includes an AMG front spoiler, side skirts, and a rear apron along with factory 18” AMG Monoblock wheels. This example also features a black soft top, headlight wipers, fog lights, and a highly desirable and valuable panoramic hardtop. The front bumper has been repainted under current ownership but all other paint is believed to be original. The Carfax report gives no indication of prior accidents or damage.
Factory 18” AMG Monoblock wheels are wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato tires showing 2019 date codes in the front and 2020 date codes in the rear. The tires measure 245/40 up front and 275/35 in the rear. The wheels appear free of any significant rash, curbing or peeling - with minor wear showing on the front two wheels only.
The cabin features seats trimmed in Grey (248) leather with a matching dashboard, gray carpets, and wood veneer accents on the center console and door panels. Amenities include power-adjustable front seats with position memory, a wind deflector, a factory cassette stereo, and an auto-dimming mirror. The seller has added a color-matched glass panoramic hardtop from another R129 with a tan headliner. All hydraulic top cylinders were replaced in 2018 and the convertible top works as intended with no hydraulic fluid leaks.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, 7k-rpm tachometer, and clock, along with gauges for fuel level, instant economy, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The digital odometer indicates just over 70k miles, approximately 1,200 of which were added by the seller over the last four years of ownership.
The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was factory-rated at 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. Service in 2018 included the replacement of all hydraulic top cylinders, replacement of all cam oiler tubes, new timing chain tensioners and replacement of the valve cover gaskets. Service in 2019 included new front struts and ball joints. An engine oil service, brake fluid service, and A/C service were all performed in preparation for the sale.
The June 2021 Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and linear mileage updates throughout the car’s life in the Houston, TX area. Both cold start and driving videos of the car can be seen below.

Hi all, as we close in the final hours of the auction, I wanted to thank you for the comments and the latest bids @EmmaLab, @PDavidson @Daddyschak @rkawles @McCannon @Shimmer. This has been a well maintained SL500 in the rare Sport trim that I feel will continue to gradually appreciate over time. The pano roof is icing! In addition to the detailed work done over the past 4 years, including cam oiler tubes, top hydraulics, suspension, brakes, tires etc.., it has a new Mercedes battery and a wiper blade. I'd be happy to help with shipping logistics, if needed. Good luck all!

@OxfordMotorcars - appreciate the kind remarks! It was well received at a recent cars and coffee. People have forgotten how timeless the design is and how well these have aged, especially with the Sports package and AMGs! Thanks again @Shimmer!

What a responsive Seller, knows his car, and what has been done, my personal opinion the AMG package really makes the look of this car, might look nice sitting next to my silver 996 cab, another Texas owned car, bought from that OTHER on line auction site..:)
Hi, It’s at the factory ride height. The front struts were replaced with Bilsteins. The springs were not. I can measure it this week. Feel free to hit the contact seller button with any questions.
I just reread the write up, is seems the front struts were replaced 2019. Were the springs also replaced? Could you measure the ride height from the center of the wheel to the fender please
Can you give any information or explanation to why the rear of the car sits lower than the front?, has the car had any suspension work or modifications?

I have had the front bumper repainted as it sits low and had numerous scratches along the bottom from curb stops and not from any accidents. Apart from that, no paintwork that I am aware of. Sorry, I don’t have access to a paint meter.
Do you know if the car has ever been repaired, or do you have paint depth measurements?
Thanks for the bid @Shimmer! Quick update - my mechanic just replaced the brake master cylinder - there was a small leak. - He replaced the headlight door for the driver’s side that had a small crack. - Replaced the plastic trim to open the center console. - Battery was replaced a few weeks ago with the OEM Mercedes one. Car is ready to go!

Yes, I added the pano roof, and sorry don't have the original. Yes gray. Good question - I am paring down the fleet a bit. I accumulated quite a few over the years and have somewhat of a revolving door. Looking to enjoy some of my newly acquired ones and pass the torch on to the next steward.
Thank you for the replies, a couple more questions: 1. With the tan headlining on the pano roof, presume this isn’t original with the car, and that you don’t have the original roof?, should the headlining be grey? 2. As a collector can I ask why your selling?
@D6lc - thanks for the interest and questions. I am collector and an enthusiast and this is one of 15 cars I own, so it was driven sparingly and was never on daily driver rotation. When I got the car, there was a ticking noise from the engine. After reading up on these motors, we determined that the plastic oiler tubes in these engines can deteriorate, so they were replaced with metal ones and voila, the noise resolved. While we were in there, we decided to do the chain tensioner as well. No repairs needed now. No oil leaks. Yes, I have records from my ownership for everything done.
A few questions: 1. Can I ask why have you put so few miles on the car during your ownership 2. Why were the cam oiler tubes and timing chain tensioners replaced, I haven't heard of these being replaced on SL500's 3. Any repairs needed on the car, any fluid leaks 4. The Carfax doesnt show any servicing under your ownership, do you have full service records?
Hi all and welcome to my first MBMarket auction. Thanks @Daddyschak for the opening bid! Here to answer any questions. It’s a beautiful car that’s well received at cars and coffee. These are great cruisers that have been under the radar too long.
