This 1981 Mercedes-Benz 500SLC is a Swiss-market example that was imported to the US and Federalized around 1999. The current owner acquired the car in 1996 from the original importing family. The 500SLC was introduced in 1980 as the successor of the 450SLC 5.0, which had been produced in order to homologate the SLC for the 1978 World Rally Championship. Power comes from a 5.0-liter M117 V8 linked with a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Silver Blue Metallic (930) over Blue Leather (232), features include 14″ Bundt alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, a sunroof, fog lights, rear seats, automatic climate control, power windows, and a cassette stereo. Maintenance in 2024 included a brake fluid flush, AC upfit to R134 with a leakdown test, and inspection. The car was used for a Saks 5th Avenue advertisement in 2024. This 500SLC has been kept in a private collection since 2016 and shows just under 64k miles on the odometer. The car is now offered on consignment by the selling dealer with a clean Carfax report and a clean New Jersey title.

This example is finished in Silver Blue Metallic (930) and features an alloy hood. It is also equipped with headlight washers and wipers as well as fog lights, an electric sunroof, dual side mirrors, a power antenna, chrome bumpers, and polished aluminum trim. The selling dealer notes the right-rear quarter panel has been previously repainted.

The original 14″ Bundt alloy wheels are mounted with Michelin Defender tires measuring 205/70 with 2014 date codes. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with ABS. The brake system was bled in April 2024.

The interior is finished in Blue Leather (232) with a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, and doors. Amenities include front seat headrests, front seat armrests, automatic climate control, a cassette stereo, power locks, and power windows.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames a federalized 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel economy, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 64k miles and total mileage is unknown due to the cluster swap during federalization. The seller reports the mileage reading was equal to the kilometers shown at the time of import.

The Euro-spec 5.0-liter M117 V8 features Bosch fuel injection and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. An oil change was performed in April 2024. In July 2024 the air conditioning was upfitted to R134 and a leak test performed to ensure the AC and heat were fully functional. The Carfax report shows history beginning in January 2000 and shows linear mileage updates and no accidents or damage since new. The current owner acquired the car in 1996 from the original importing family and has used it sparingly since. As Mercedes-Benz aimed to reintroduce themselves into the world of rally racing, the SLC was hand-picked as the perfect platform with superb handling and a fixed roof providing added body rigidity to the SL. The only piece missing from the formula was more power. With that in mind, Mercedes introduced the 450SLC 5.0 as a homologation model which beefed up the M117. The debut event for the SLC rally car was the month-long 30,000 km 1978 Vuelta America del Sud (Tour of South America) which was known as one of the most grueling rallies. Only about one third of all the entered cars survived and finishing 1st, 2nd, and 4th was the 5.0 SLC, and, for what it's worth, 3rd place was also a Mercedes. The 500SLC was introduced in 1980 as the successor of the 450SLC 5.0, still as a homologation model SLC packed with a 5.0L under the hood in order to continue their dominance in rally racing. Today, finding a rust-free 5.0L SLC has become increasingly difficult. This blue over blue example has stunning curb appeal and retains nearly all of its originality. The unrestricted Euro M117 is a night and day difference over the muted U.S. versions. For true classic touring, you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler model to do it in. We wouldn't be surprised if the next owner adds some rally lights and finds the nearest dirt road.
