7 Hours to go. Car is all ready to be driven or shipped to its new home. And I'm regretting letting it go more by the day.......
Hi to all the bidders and viewers of the auction and thank you to the MB Market for listing my S500 Coupe. I'm going to be very sorry to see this one go! While I have always admired and liked the 140 chassis, I never particularly sought one out. The ones that always held particular appeal in period, and still today, were accessorized by the likes of AMG, Brabus and Lorinser. Like many of you, I grew up reading car magazines and classifieds like European Car and Dupont Registry. One company that figured prominently in such publications was Claus Ettensburger Corporation, better known as CEC. CEC was the importer of highly desirable European auto accessories from the likes of Lorinser, AC Schnitzer, Techart, Antera, Azev and Remus, just to name a few. Vehicles sporting such accessories were not common sights outside of the magazines, but every now and then a Mercedes or other car sporting such goodies would be seen "in the wild." And the owners of such vehicles were usually quite discriminating in their taste and definitely not of the proletariat. None other than Michael Jordan had two Lorinser equipped 140 Benzes during his Bulls heyday. This car fits that description as it appears to have been done in period, most likely at CEC rather than an authorized retailer, sometime in early to mid 2000. This makes sense when viewing the carfax as the first owner purchased the car off lease in late '99. The first owner was the creator of the Rollin Hard lowrider T-shirt line among various other graphic T-shirt products. He had it until 2016, when he sold it to an executive at his company. When I came across it for sale, I knew it was something a bit more special than a similar mileage stock example and was almost certainly modified in period rather than pieced together over the years. And it was so period correct that it brought me back to those days of drooling over the CEC catalog, which was sent to me after I sent my $5 to them! Normally, an owner would go with the full Lorinser kit, meaning wheels, full bodykit and exhaust. The first owner of this car opted for a more subtle, different setup with the Gen 2 Lorinser front spoiler (the Gen 1 had small slats on the sides), rear spoiler w/o brake light, 19" chrome D93's and a Remus exhaust, which is almost never seen on the big body Benzes. These mods set the car off extremely well. I have another Mercedes which is many multiples more valuable than this one, much more rare and even more special and this car gets far more thumbs up and people stopping and asking about it. I purchased the car sight unseen, hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Luckily it was far better than I could have imagined. However, it is not a show car. There are some scratches, dings, a few dents here and there. Pretty much what one would expect from a 143K mile car. However, the mechanicals and undercarriage are spot on. This car is far better than many I have seen with half the mileage. Originally my plan with this car was to keep it and enjoy it for several years before giving it a like new paint job and a period correct McIntosh sound system to set the car off exactly the way I would have wanted it in the '90s. It was certainly going to be a keeper because I won't be able to find another quite like it, in as good shape with the right mods and the right price. Unfortunately, there are a couple of reasons why I have to sell it, one of them being a complete lack of space. Also, I am in need of a car to be kept overseas and I need to implement a one in, one out policy. So unfortunately this has to go. I will certainly regret selling this one!! I look forward to answering any questions and seeing this one go to a great new home.................
