@seller You purchased this top about two years ago on this website, why you selling it now?
@seller Thanks for pointing me to the Carfax. But at a quick glance, it does raise another question (sorry). In the Carfax, it shows all four tires being replaced 1/22/2015 at the dealership, but the listing says date codes from 2001-2014. I can't imagine the dealership putting that old of tires on a car. Has there been possible wheel/tire swapping going on to take the better wheels/tires off this car (for some reason), then putting older wheels/tires back on it from another car?
@seller There is a picture of the cars operating temp #136. Was that picture taking before/after the car was/was not completely warmed up?
Buyers, though these "can" be great cars, and not saying this is a bad car, it does not come without a certain cost. Some parts are getting hard to find (glowplugs, glowplug relay) Just did both on one (own two) of my CDI's, and my MB guy that has been working on these cars for over 40 years had to get the relay from Germany (rebuilt) and the plugs from two different location. He said; "If the plug breaks coming out, there is no easy way to get the remaining out". That along with lower control arms, engine/trans mount, fluid flushes, both battery's, etc.. These cars at this point with over 150K miles, unless you have full documentation of service, plan to spend $3,500-$5,000 getting it back and fully sorted. Again, can be great car, and not saying this car is bad, but unless the seller can show full history, it's a crap shoot at best. I can tell you this car alone, will be a "minimum" of $2,500 just in new tires, full fluid service, possible (two) new batterys, etc.. It would be interesting to see under the engine cover for possible "black death" (that's another maintenance item, injector seals). Though the booked maybe stamped, I'd want to see full-service records to see exactly what has/had not been done to this car. Unless all the things above have been recently done, plan on it.
Sadly today, it was kinda like an old friend of mine says all the time "What something is worth and what someone is willing to pay, are normal two different numbers". Nice Car, sorry ya didn't get it sold.
Currently own a 1997 R129, they are great cars, put the hardtop on it and it's the best value MB coupe you can purchase.
Good Luck GT, I'm out. As you know, the Pano is worth 4K-6K, hope it meets the reserve for you.
Not surprising, when less than a month ago a 2001 was bid to only $18K on BAT with the same miles. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-mercedes-benz-sl500-118/ Time will tell if the market comes back on the cars to where it was a year ago. At this point, got to wait for the good weather to find out.
With the adjustments in the market, it will be interesting to see if it makes it to the last highest bid while on BAT in Aug-2023 when the reserve was not met and if some of the issues at that time (headliner, seat black mark, etc..) have been resolved. As an owner of a 1998-R129 in the same colors, this will be a fun one to watch. Good Luck https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1998-mercedes-benz-sl500-138/
This car is the car I really wanted with the color combo to match my daughters R107 in the white/blue colors but couldn't fine one at the time. Agree with Kmadan, glad to see you over here as well. BAT has become, well whatever. Hope you get the numbers you're looking for here, though day before Thanksgiving is a tough day to end an auction, hope it does not affect the outcome. GLWTA
I'm out, with no heated seats and needs tires, etc..
@Jonnycomelatley Will be interesting to see where this one ends up based on the black/black 30K mile car that sold here in May, that had more options, service done, new tires, etc.. My daughter has 129K on her CDI and this would be a nice replacement giving her about seven more years at 15K a year.
@Seller I want to make sure I'm seeing the pictures correctly. Appears the headliner is sagging on both sides, is that correct? Also, the tires are "2014", so it will need new tires to be driven any distance after purchase?
@seller I currently own two of these cars (CDI), a garage queen with 100K on the OD was dealer maint. and in the last year has needed motor/trans mounts, glow plugs/module, fabric pulling away from the door pockets, etc.. The second one (outside car) has needed headliner, climate control/blower motor, glow plugs/module, SBC (at dealership for this right now). I understand your comment "those on this website know" but unless you've actually owned a W211 and only go by the E320-CDI is the end-all of MB cars, though they are great cars, they are not without their own set of problems regardless of them being garage kept, dealer maintained or not because they were built on the W211 platform. Do a search and you'll see. https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w211/46060-summary-w211-problems-fixes.html Just Saying,
JTwoods4, You are correct about the headliner issues with the cars, I've got one that needs a headliner and ave been quoted $1,000 becuase you really need to also do the sunroof portion. For some reason, MB used some sub-standard products for both the headliner and the door pockets/pillar trim (also comes off). You can no longer get the factory materials from MB, so one must match it best they can. My CDI that only had 88K on the OD had major headliner sag, not a question of if, but when. This goes back to may original post, all the problems of a W211 minus the engine!
Though many folks love these cars, they are not without their own set of problems. Engine/Trans mounts, Glow Plugs/Module, etc.. Any problems the W211 cars have, other than engine, this car will have. If you try and go cheap on the parts vs. using MB Parts, you'll have problems. I own one, have had heater blower issues, climate control, speakers, engine/trans mounts, glow plugs/module issues, and that's with well-maintained car. If fact, it's at the dealership right now getting the SBC braking system fixed (glad it's still covered under MB). Looks to be a great car, but just know, they still need work like all MB's
