This 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 was originally a California black plate car through the 2010’s until it moved to Atlanta, Georgia with a vintage race car collector. It was sold through GAS Motorcars on consignment in 2022 to a local wheel shop owner and is now offered through the selling dealer, GAS Motorcars. This example is finished in Medium Blue (350) over a Blue Gray MB-Tex (G4) interior cabin featuring Gray door panels and Brown Bakelite door and console trim. Power comes from a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine paired to a column shifted 4-speed manual transmission. Features include all original brightwork, original Bosch fog lights, upgraded Morimoto headlights, lower safety belts, paint matched hubcaps, and a period-correct Becker Mexico tube radio. Most recent repairs performed in preparation to the auction have been a generator repair, A service, points service, and a timing adjustment. The odometer displays just over 66k miles (TMU). This 190 is offered by the selling dealer with ignition and trunk keys, various extra replacement parts, and a clean Georgia title.
This 190 displays Medium Blue (350) as noted on the door sill plate. The original brightwork remains in good condition and the windows are reportedly free from cracks and pitting with all crank operations fully functional. The seller notes a dent with cracked paint on the rear passenger quarter panel. The car has been repainted in the original Medium Blue color in 2018. Additional equipment includes bumper overriders, parking lights, Bosch fog lights, and upgraded Morimoto headlights. Spare brake lights are included with the car.
Factory 13″ steel wheels painted in red are paired with the original Medium Blue painted hubcaps that measure 13x5 on Doral SDL 70A all four corners with 2010 date codes. An original full-size spare wheel and tire are shown in the trunk.
The cabin is trimmed in Blue Gray MB-Tex (G4) across the seats and door panels with a mushroom dashboard. The MB-Tex seats show in great condition front and rear. The original rubber floor mats are kept in the trunk for the front and the originals are installed for the rear. The seller notes they are old and have lost all elasticity. The dashboard features original chrome and Bakelite-trimmed knobs and buttons including a functional tube radio. An aftermarket brass shift knob is installed with the original included in the sale. The Blue Gray headliner shows some sagging throughout. A new piece of wood has been installed across the dashboard.
The dual spoke white steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer displays 66k original miles.
The 1.9-liter M121 gasoline in-line four cylinder was rated for 110 horsepower and 114 lbs-ft of torque when new and features a single downdraft West German Solex carburetor. Paired to the 19.-liter engine is a four speed column shift manual transmission. The driving video shows quick shifts and zero synchro issues present. An in-engine electric fuel pump tied to the ignition assembly has been retrofitted for a more reliable method of delivering fuel to the carburetor. A generator repair, A service, points service, and a timing adjustment was performed at Auto Benz in Marietta, Georgia was done in preparation to the sale of the vehicle as well as a mechanical once over by the independent Mercedes-Benz shop. The driving video shows the cooling system works magnificently, oil pressure is strong, and the engine is incredibly healthy. Underside photos are provided in the gallery.
This 190 is offered by the selling dealer with 66k miles, ignition and trunk keys, various extra replacement parts, recent repaint, and a clean Georgia title.
The seller has included the following videos.
The W121 “Ponton” is a four door 190SL for all intents and purposes. If you’re an enthusiast that wants to get into a car from the ‘50s or ‘60s that has an affordable entry price which is also usable on the weekends or if you want to drive it to work, then look no further. The provided driving videos show this car is an incredibly usable driver that works in modern traffic. With Auto Benz having gone through the points system and the cooling system dialed in, this example seems like an incredibly happy car. The new blue paint and the blue-gray MB-Tex interior is a charming combination. These are very simple cars to work on and the 1.9-liter engine has good enough power to cruise on a modern highway. Plus the four-speed manual transmission on the column makes for a fun interaction that matches the rest of the vibe.
