This 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 was purchased by the current owner in 2007. It’s finished in Black (040) over a Light Beige Leather (205) interior and shows 37k miles on the odometer. The car remains in stock form aside from the addition of Maxilite Penta wheels. Features include North American bumpers and headlamps, front mounted fog lamps, a power sunroof, air conditioning, power windows, central locking, and more. Power comes from a 6.9-liter M100 V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Records since 2007 have been retained showing all major services and maintenance with the most recent service including a complete fluid flush and new battery in preparation for the sale. This W116 now shows 37k miles and is offered by the selling dealer on behalf of the current owner with original literature, original suspension chocks, two keys, factory literature, and a clean Colorado title.
The body is finished in Black (040) and accented by original brightwork and black body trim. Front and rear bumpers are North American market parts along with the sealed beam headlamps. W116 6.9s have specific bumper guards which this car is fitted with. All glass shows the original green tint from the factory and has no damage. Close ups of the windows, window trim, brightwork, and lighting can be seen in the gallery below. This example carries original glass. Exterior features include a power sliding sunroof, aftermarket static antenna, and independently adjustable rear view mirrors. The car was originally painted in Brilliant Red Metallic (525) but was fully repainted 10 years ago. The seller notes no rust or corrosion.
Maxilite Penta Style 16″ wheels with black crested center caps measure 245/50 on all four corners and feature Hankook Ventus V2 Concept tires with 2020 date codes. A matching original full-size spare wheel and tire are in the trunk along with the original Bilstein jack. This W116 is fitted with a self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension system designed in-house by Mercedes-Benz.
The cabin is trimmed in original Light Beige Leather (205) across the seats, door cards, dashboard, and armrest. The seats appear original and unrestored. Burl Wood trim accents the dashboard, center console, and shifter surround. Some cracking in the veneer is noted around the climate control bezel and around the shifter. Original carpeting shows in good shape with no UV damage and the car comes fitted with period correct coco mats for the front seats. The Becker Mexico head unit has been replaced with an older, quality Alpine unit. Air conditioning controls function through the use of the ACC II vacuum and servo controlled climate control fascia as well and mitigate fan speed accordingly along with temperature and direction. Climate control works and blows cold air. Other features include controls for the operational power antenna, rear defrost, cabin lights, and power sunroof.
The factory four-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 170-mph speedometer and 7k-rpm tachometer, as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer displays 37k original miles. The color of the instrumentation needles remains an OEM dark orange.
The 6.9-liter, dry sump M100 V8 was rated at 249 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque when new for North American examples. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 722.003 three-speed automatic transmission. This was the strongest three speed transmission Mercedes-Benz built which could handle the power of the M100 power plant and was much smoother than the four speed seen in the W109 6.3 which had a harsh first to second gear shift reviewers complained about in period. A new Duracell battery has been installed prior to the sale along with all fluids. Records under the current owner have been kept documenting maintenance since 2007.
This W116 now shows 37k miles and is offered by the selling dealer on behalf of the current owner with original literature, original suspension chocks, two keys, factory literature, and a clean Colorado title.
It doesn’t get more menacing than a black W116 450SEL 6.9. The W116 was a first for a lot of things for Mercedes-Benz: first to get Bosch ABS, first to get hydropneumatic suspension, and first to be officially classified as an S-Class. These are wonderful cars to drive and with their M100 power plant, high tech suspension, high quality interior wood, and heavy, accurate steering, they feel almost exotic to pilot. The 245 width tires on the high quality reproduction Pentas by Maxilite are certain to give this car wonderful road holding feel and much needed traction for the ZF designed rear limited slip differential to grab the pavement since the M100 shoots 360 foot-pounds of torque right into the drive axles. With only 1,816 units sold to the U.S. market, these are sure to appreciate and have seen an exponential price increase over the past 5 years. Any four door flagship Mercedes-Benz with the M100 engine is a future collectable item. One has to maintain it to factory spec for them to retain value, however. Left in the collection and not driven is unhealthy for these cars. That’s the joy of them: to keep them happy, one must drive them. And whoever buys this example will find absolute pleasure in doing that as the W116 is an exquisite automobile to live with.

Thank you, I know the system is functioning properly but thought possibly there was a test I could perform and verify without a trip to a Mercedes mechanic. Thanks
thanks some great insights are here on the system Typically the spheres last about 8-10 yrs although rarely 12 years. You can do a test of the Nitrogen charging, leak down, and recharging see more here https://mercedessource.com/problems/suspension/69-hydraulic-suspension-diagnosis-and-repair
@MSerpe Hi thank you! The hydraulic suspension operates correctly and are no vacuum leaks that I am aware of. I’m not sure how to run a test but if you let me know, I would be happy to shoot a video. When it arrived and was taken off the flat bed. The leveling light on the dash illuminated and you could see the car rise up after it was started. When it reached the correct height the light went off. There is a service receipt in the gallery which shows the pump being replaced in 2020 For the 4 weeks I’ve had the car in the garage the suspension has not deflated and have been no leaks on the floor. Thanks!
Hello lovely car, thanks for posting it couple questions does it pass the self leveling test? perhaps a video of that is possible? when was the last time the hydraulic spheres were changed? any vacuum leaks? would help to post the service records, only one is shown from 5 yrs ago with some minor stuff
Additional photos of the underside have been uploaded to the gallery.
Good afternoon! I just uploaded undercarriage photos. They should be live shortly. Thanks!

@nptmbm Yes, I will have access to a lift and post undercarriage photos on Thursday Thanks!
Is it possible to see some undercarriage pictures?
@570TE Yes, the car was originally purchased at Leo Payne Imports in Lakewood Colorado 4-29-78 The car remained in Colorado with the owners family until it was purchased from the daughter by the current owner. Unfortunately the service records from the original owner were misplaced over the years. Thanks!
So the current owner bought the car in 2007. Do we have any maintenance records or know anything about the ownership prior to that time? Even where the car was located?
$10,000 bid placed by @Silo
@PhantomU The owner prefers black cars. He’s not a big fan of red, and decided to have it professionally re-painted black. Thanks!
Hello, why was it repainted? Red exterior with tan interior would be more rare and striking. IMHO
"individually adjustable rear view mirrors" .... what? As opposed to synchronised rear view mirrors?

@570TE The car has been in the owners collection and only driven a few hundred miles a year. Lake Barrington Motorsports does the service on all the owners vehicles, I asked them to print the service records just prior to the auction. Yes, the mileage is correct and will state actual on the title. Thanks!
My dad still has his that he bought new in 1979. Silver with Blue. I remember going to the bank with him and it was like $50,000 back then. My dads has an 85 mph speedometer. I would think to repaint this car the motor would have to come out and all of the chrome trim. I would have left it red. Cool car.

Looks like all the services were performed in 2019, 2020, and 2021 (even though the receipts were just printed in 2024). Have there been any services in the last three years? It looks like the car has been in storage - only 1200 miles driven since early 2019... Agree the front and back seats show quite a bit of wear for a 37,000 mile car. Shouldn't the sheepskins have kept the seats in better shape than this? Likewise for the wood.... cracking suggests car was sitting in the sun for a long time.... Will the title state box "A" - "actual miles?"
@MKotzas No, I’m sorry we do not have the original wheels for the car. Thanks!
Do you have the original alloys?
This car spent the majority of its life with wool covers on the seats. I removed them to take the photos. It appears they were never treated with a leather conditioner and have dried a bit with age. Thanks!
Driver’s seat shows a lot of wear for a 37k mile car
This is by far the best looking 450SEL I have ever seen!!
