This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 200D 4-Speed was originally sold in Germany and exported to the United States in September of 1984. It’s currently registered in California with previous registrations noted in New York and New Hampshire. The current owner and seller acquired the car in 2021 and has added 1900 miles under their care. Finished in Classic White (737) over a Palomino Fabric (054) interior, power comes from a 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include a painted mechanical sunroof, dual-control heat, central locking, and manual windows. Records under the current owner’s care are included in the sale and recent work includes an oil and filter change and complete fluid flush in September of 2023. This W123 shows 80k miles and is offered by the current owner with the original tool roll, import documentation, two keys, and a clean California title.
The car is finished in Classic White (737) and features chrome-accented European-spec bumpers and trim, North-American glass headlamps, a mechanical sunroof, and an adjustable passenger-side mirror. The body remains free from any corrosion and the glass is well-kept and free from cracks. Detailed photos of the exterior and exterior features can be seen in the gallery below.
Factory 14″ steel wheels wear paint-matched hubcaps in Classic White (737) and wear Cooper tires measuring 195/70 at all four corners. The original tool roll remains in it's protective plastic sleeve alongside a spare located in the trunk.
The cabin features seats upholstered in Palomino Fabric (054)with matching door panels, carpets, and dashboard. Wood veneer spans the dashboard with textured black paneling around the shift knob and auxiliary switch panel. The seller notes the central locking system to have a leak but the car can be locked manually. The cabin shows light wear with some discoloration on the driver door interior panel and light staining on seats.
Instrumentation includes a 100-mph speedometer, ancillary readouts, and an analog clock. Additional auxiliary gauges include coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The fuel sending unit is noted to be inaccurate. The six-digit odometer shows 80k miles.
The naturally aspirated 2.0-liter OM615 diesel inline-four was factory rated at 60 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque and sends power to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. Records under the current owner’s care are included in the sale and recent work includes an oil and filter change and complete fluid flush in September of 2023.

A true "cockroach car" if there ever was one! GLWA!

@ Seller: Thank you for your replies. I would have assumed the cluster was changed as it was originally a euro-spec car hence would have had to had a cluster with kilometers. Regardless of miles, still looks great. Though I will dispute that "all the 4 tires are like brand new" given they are more than 14 years old. At least a new set is relatively inexpensive less than $400 out the door.
@acd76 records do not indicate that the cluster was changed. Car was registered in New York and later in Massachusetts. I bought it in 2021 , registered in NH and brought it to CA last year
@Gayatri DOT says 2709
@acd76 DOT DOT
Also, I assume this is not the original instrument cluster as it would have been in kilometers. Do you know when the replacement one was installed, which now says 80K? Thank you.
Seller--can you please answer question from Oct 10, what are the date codes on the tires?

@markwilson no issues with the odometer at all . No AC . The red thing is the key chain ribbon .
Have you had any issues with the odometer since you’ve owned it? Such incredibly low miles for a 40 year old car. Not doubting just wondering. Also, since it wasn’t mentioned, I assume there is no AC? And what is that red thing on the driver floorboard near the floor mat?
@TheAMGKit , actually, with the manual gearbox these cars do fine in traffic, you just have to rev them up. The 5 cylinder versions, at least over here, all had automatic transmissions and offered no advantage over the manuals. The turbo 5cyl cars are faster, but you miss the fun of shifting gears. For use in the USA, the fact that this car doesn't seem to have AC IS a negative; retrofitting AC to this car would be a huge headache and make it less original. And with 60 hp, it doesn't have a lot of power to spare for running the AC compressor. So if you live in a temperate part of NA, where they don't salt the roads in winter, where you don't get a lot of hot days, where it's generally dry so you don't need the defrost function, this might be the ideal car for you. I admit I can't readily think of such a place, but perhaps there is one. It's a well-kept car, for a fact.

@TheAMGKit - Most of the smaller-engined 123s were sold as taxis and private cars for use in places like Spain, Portugal, Japan, Hong Kong & SE Asia, S America, and the Middle East - where speed was a non-issue. If I needed a car that I knew would last forever and lived in a place like Lisbon or Tokyo - and didn't want to go for an EV - This would be perfectly adequate.
I know y'all swoon over these, and Pierre hedary would say the car has horsepower power to spare.....but what in the world was Mercedes thinking whwn they sent out a 60 HP car . I know fuel crisis etc but they still had the m117 5 liter and just finished up the 6.9. Balance out the offerings. Sure sure. Maybe that's fine in today's line up but back 40 yrs ago. No thanks

@Peabo Hi will check and revert
@Gayatri I’m specifically interested in the age of the tires, not the appearance. Are the brand new? That would be great. But 10 year old tires that look new are dangerous. Thank you
@Peabo private party
@Peabo all the 4 tires are like brand new . The spare tire is not used at all
@Peabo I drive it on freeways often . Will touch 85 miles speed in no time . The engine is in pristine condition
@road2W140 Wouldn't that 4L be amazing but, alas, it's only half that and barely enough power to get out of it's own way but still super cool
@Gayatri, Can you tell us the age of the tires? Perhaps the date codes? Thank you
@Gayatri Is this a private party transaction or dealer transaction? BTW, this is a very cool car
There's a mistake in the first paragraph "power comes from a 4.0L 4-cylinder diesel"
