This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL AMG was ordered out of Switzerland when new and has been living in Germany under the care of Marc Luca until the current owner purchased it and imported it to Marietta, Georgia in late 2025. Finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic (172) over Cream Beige Leather (275), power is provided by a 5.0-liter M117 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a full AMG body kit, painted AMG Penta wheels, AMG 50.1 cams, white AMG springs, a sliding steel sunroof, burl wood trim, automatic climate control, heated front Recaro bucket seats, power reclining custom trimmed rear seat, Euro headlights, Euro bumpers, Becker head unit with bluetooth integration, and rear passenger footrests. This W126 was restored in Germany prior to it coming to the states with a complete suspension rebuild, new fluids, hoses, brakes, ignition refresh, new axles, valve cover gaskets, and much more. This W126 is now offered on behalf of the seller and shows just over 74k kilometers (46k miles) with manufacturer’s books & literature, tool kit, spare wheel, jack, three keys, German paperwork, period magazine articles, and a clean Georgia title.
The body is finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic (172) and features a full AMG body kit with Anthracite monochrome on the grill, grill insert, door handles, door window bezels, front/rear windshield bezels, and lower cladding trim. The German vehicle registration paperwork also notates AMG body work dated August 14, 2025 and stamps are shown in the gallery for the front bumper and rocker panels. During its restoration, the entire car saw a repaint in the factory color with paint meter readings included below. The W126 is equipped with a sliding steel sunroof which does work, paint matched headlight wipers, glass European headlights with amber corners, and dual exhaust tips at the rear. A period-correct AMG badge is fitted to the trunk lid and all paint is reported to be in excellent condition with detailed photos in the gallery.
AMG Penta wheels measure 16x8 and are fitted with new Kumho Ecsta HS51 tires showing 2024 date codes. The tires measure 225/50 on all four corners with pictures of the tread in the gallery. The wheels are paint-matched to the car with machined lips and AMG is shown in raised lettering on each face. White AMG springs and Bilstein shocks were fitted with rebuilt brake calipers that have been painted black. New brake fluid is seen in the clean reservoir and a new brake master cylinder is spotted in the gallery.
The seating surfaces are upholstered in Cream Beige Leather (275) with a black dashboard, cream carpets, and cream doorcards. This 500SEL was originally fitted with Cream Velour (955) with remnants seen on the door panel map pockets. Replacing the velour seats are Cream Leather with Red piping Recaro buckets for the front and custom upholstered power reclining rear bench seats. The rear parcel shelf has been upholstered in cream Alcantara. Burl wood trim accents the center console, shift knob, dashboard, and door panels – the panels appear to be in excellent condition. Amenities include central locking, automatic climate control, cruise control, Becker Mexico Cassette with integrated bluetooth from Becker, locking glovebox, and matching rear passenger footrests. Remnants of a factory block heater can be seen via a VDO gauge above the shift knob but this was removed at some point. Additionally, the front seats are heated and confirmed to work by the seller as do all of the power controls shown in the video. Rear reading lights are integrated in the C-pillar for the rear passengers. The front passenger visor does fold up all the way.
A four spoke steering wheel frames an AMG 300-kph speedometer. Readouts include a 7k-rpm tachometer with an integrated analog clock. Additional gauges display fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and instant economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer indicates approximately 74k kilometers (46k miles) original miles.
The 5.0-liter M117 V8 was factory rated at 231 horsepower and 299 lb-ft of torque when new, however this M117 hosts AMG 50.1 cams which period magazines are quoted to make 272 horsepower and a more aggressive top end. These 50.1 cars had reshaped combustion chambers which increased compression from 9.3:1 to 9.9:1, polished and lightened rocker arms, and AMG camshafts with more aggressive valve lift and duration than stock M117 camshafts. The solid liters allow higher RPM while avoiding valve float from the hydraulic valve actuation at the higher-than-stock RPM range. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 722.3 four-speed automatic transmission. This example was restored in Germany before coming to the United States. No records came with the car when the boutique pre-merger outfit Marc Luca went through the car. Thorough undersides are included in the gallery where you can see the majority of the work performed by means of new bushings, hoses, plating, refurbishment of heat shields, new axles, serviced differential, and more. The seller also included pictures of the AMG stampings on the camshafts and detailed photos of the engine with the valve covers off showing the condition of the top end.
This 500SEL AMG was imported late in 2025 from Germany and the seller has clocked a few hundred miles in the car around the Atlanta area. This W126 is now offered on behalf of the seller and shows just over 74k kilometers (46k miles) with manufacturer’s books & literature, tool kit, spare wheel, jack, three keys, German paperwork, period magazine articles, and a clean Georgia title.
Cold start, walkaround, underside inspection, and driving footage of the car has been provided below.
Early pre-merger AMGs are finally getting the attention they deserve. The Affalterbach tuning house in the mid ‘80s was grass roots and operated by enthusiasts who wanted to just make fast cars. Mercedes-Benz provided AMG with good starting points to build off of, especially with the W126. The chassis was billet strong, road noise was low, it had cabin room for big Recaro seats, and the M117 engines were undertaxed and under-tuned from the factory for durability. This was an empty chalkboard for AMG to write their signature and make their own monsters. This 500SEL AMG shows their early tuning prowess with the modified valvetrain and 50.1 camshafts. They pulled out all the stops on modifying these single overhead cam engines before changing the bottom end work as seen on the 5.4 M117s. Eventually they created their own DOHC head design seen in the M117 6.0 DOHC engines mounted in Hammers and C/W126s starting in 1986. This led the way for the hybrid engines and the introduction of the M119. Featuring a full refurbishment and suspension overhaul, the seller’s video highlights the handling prowess and the healthy cammed 5.0-liter engine in action on a backroad. We can only imagine how fast and advanced these were in the early ‘80s. Every other car on the road in this period were like dollar store slingshots while the W126 AMGs were guided smart bombs.
