@TerraWe are trying to locate records, but the previous owner who had it in California did touch the engine and transmission during the restoration. The transmissions and the M100 are generally pretty stout power plants that don't need much other than some light top end work when they get high in the milage.
@Jim_RosenthalYou're right. It took until the 500E for Mercedes-Benz to make a production sedan as quicker than the 6.3. Nearly 20 years later!
That was a good battle. Thanks for everyone participating. We were close to reserve but didn't quite hit it.
Like what The MB Market said in the insights, these inline six cars are most of the experience and looks of the coveted 3.5 that go for more than double. These seem like deals to me. Plus I like these M130 power plants. While smooth, you can hear that '60s sports car rasp when they get on cam that's so attractive.
@Jim_RosenthalAlways appreciate you commenting! We just checked the car since I drove it last (about a month ago) and it is sitting at the same height. If you haven't cranked it in about 10 weeks, you will start to see it getting lower. We run the car every two weeks to keep it from getting grumpy and get it up to temp as well if it isn't driven. I'm hoping The MB Market team gets the undersides up soon. I took 50 pictures. You can see a lot of the suspension has been gone through. Really it's just a few of the bags showing signs of age. The steering and movement in the suspension feels rather dialed in per the video. All the issues are asymptomatic. But since were amongst MB collectors, I had to mention the issues I saw. Original head units are readily available too! If you have a MB friend that owns a shop, they will have some laying around or you can find them on eBay. Becker is wonderful to work with with quick turn around times and their BT module upgrade is a must on all of the cars I own.
With 30 minutes left, I'll be on stand by! I should clarify since I've gotten some PMs about the previous auction of the car: it was not a condition or misrepresentation reason as to why the sale fell through, so do not fret about something weird being wrong with the car. It was just personal factors that effected the previous listing from the buyer who we are in good standing with still. With that clarified, I really hope to be chatting with a winner today. The seller's restoration shop in Germany did one helluva job going through this car. He is an open wallet collector with his classic Mercedes-Benz. -Excellent paint in the original color -Really well done interior restoration using OE leathers and carpets. -The M130 is healthy. No blue or white smoke on start up. Cranks noticeably quickly when cold. -Transmission shifts fast and smoothly Happy bidding and good luck.
As we enter the final hours of the auction, I’m available for any last minute questions or phone calls. Good luck everyone and happy bidding!
@arjangHey everyone! I have yet another 300SEL 6.3 I'm helping re-home to another enthusiast. This is a very solid example that's pretty dialed in compared to others out there. The interior is superb and the engine/trans feels very healthy. Please go through the videos and gallery. Undersides are getting submitted as we speak and will be uploaded shortly by The MB Market team. I've pointed out all of the issues in the video and shot them with my camera. Don't be afraid to ask any questions -- there's a lot of info in the gallery and video that you could miss, so I have no issues answering any sort of question. Let me know if you have any questions! I'm available for phone-calls and the car is available for showings in Ball Ground, Georgia at the warehouse it's stored at. Thanks for looking! Agree, that's why I took a bunch of detailed underside photos for transparency. The air suspension however is fully operational -- it airs up and airs down with the pull handle by your knee. People commented on the last one sitting a little low for the shoot, so I wanted to shoot this one with the air bags pretty inflated this time around and also to show that they hold air. The car also doesn't get slammed to the ground when sitting. While the exteriors of the bags look rough, they do work.
@KJen08The black paint makes the cognac interior pop. It’s such a warm, old school interior.
@eyetralian Congrats! I'm finishing up with a work thing really fast and I'll reach out in 5 minutes.
Good luck everyone. The car is mechanically dialed in and has the looks that matches the work done to it. There's nothing really to hide on this one. It is as it appears.
There's nothing like a low milage, facelift W126 in a good color. I'm in love with this one.
Hey everyone! Some of you might think this car looks familiar and yes, it was listed a few months ago under the owner's personal account where the winner unfortunately (but gracefully) backed out -- which gives you guys a second chance to bid and win this spectacular W111 cabriolet. The car is unchanged and hasn't logged any miles since it was first listed. It has just been staged in the climate controlled storage facility in Ball Ground, Georgia. Please look through the gallery and watch the video I put together. I hope I answered most questions with the listing I put together and the concise writeup The MB Market put together for the vehicle. If you have any questions, hit me up with a private message. I'm also available for phone calls and the car is available for showings. I'll be here if you all need anything else. Thanks for looking and stopping by!
As we come into the final hours of the auction, I'll be around to assist in any manner possible or answer any last minute questions. Please view the video where I go through the underside and the mechanicals of the car. I don't say this often about these older cars, but this one is actually turn key and ready to drive pretty much anywhere. I'm so pleased to host this one on my account. -Recent restoration in Germany. Tens of thousands have been invested. -Air suspension and all the steering components have been replaced -Motor starts right up and delivers full power once warmed up -No clunks or bangs felt on the road This is such a wonderful and cool car that's an appreciating asset and collector item with rich motorsport history to boot. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
Hey everyone, I submitted some service records that are translated and should be populating here soon. I’m still around for any phone calls or PMs. Thanks to those who have reached out behind the scenes. Good chatting with you.
This is a good time to up his win/bid ratio!
@SimonBelgium Air suspension video is up.
The air suspension video should be up today. Waiting on The MB Market to get it posted amongst their busy day. They're usually pretty fast. Thanks for the bids so far everyone.
@arjang The owner told me that's preventative and how his shop in Germany just does restorations. Feel free to look closely at the underside photos provided. You will be able to see any signs of rust repair through the undercoating and also watch the underside inspection video! Nothing really stood out to me during my inspection. @SimonBelgium I will get a video of it working up here soon. I'll tag you when I get it up. EDIT: Air suspension video should be up tomorrow when we're near the car again.
@SimonBelgiumPer the video, you press it in to lower the vehicle and pull it out to raise it. I wish I took a video of it in operation. I was playing with it in that shoot location to get the car sitting right for the pictures. I had it on the lower end for the pictures. It does work and it raises/lowers pretty quickly! If you give the engine a little bit of revs it operates faster. As to why MB used this in their cars, the air suspension was first and foremost there for performance and luxury reasons. The air bags are a great solution for road noise reduction. They act as dampers and reduces NVH and unwanted road feel. You can barely feel rubble strips through the chassis coming up to stop signs. It’s uncanny. It was also used for performance. The M100 weighs almost 800 pounds dry. The suspension reduces nose dive and also lift on acceleration. They stay really flat through turns when you’re hustling them as well. It’s just like the Airmatic systems in today’s cars with their function. As to why you can modulate the suspension, that’s more of a byproduct of what I said before. You can raise it for crossing over poor roads and conditions. Even use it to cross high standing water! Lower it for high speed Autobahn runs for less drag and higher level of control. Or raise the car and you’re able to get it over center post lifts without dragging subframes and exhausts across the lift arms. Hope that helps.
@equinepeddlerSure! There's a few things: Steering tightness and lack of play. These have very direct boxes when they're dialed in. This one has virtually zero play. Suspension is amazing. The air system has been totally gone through. New bags, rebuilt valve bodies, new steering components (tie-rods, ball joints, etc). It has that taught, on its toes feeling when driving down the road these are famous for. Also zero clunks in the suspension! That's something a lot of classic MB owners seem to ignore which drives me insane. Fuel system and injection system felt dialed in. There was no sputtering or lack of power at the top end. Throttle response is instantaneous followed by gobs of torque. Underside was immaculate. All the right bolts were cadmium plated and I saw the use of a lot of OEM parts underneath. No expense was spared. Interior is just correct. The leather seats were redone amazingly well with high quality hides and the fitment is very OE. The wood is spot on and in great condition. What's important about this car is all the systems (engine, suspension, interior, body, chrome) all were gone through and exist in harmony. No one system was restored while others were ignored, so the vehicle works as it should when new. Please watch the video -- I go over driving impressions in the video. Let me know if you need anything else!
I'm so excited to host this BEAUTIFUL W109 on my account from the same collector up in Ball Ground, Georgia! Having spent the day with this car, I can honestly say this is the nicest 300SEL 6.3 I've ever interacted with. The restoration is top notch was was done in Germany a few years ago. It was both a cosmetic and mechanical restoration. I am sourcing the service records for this car as we speak and will get them translated and posted in the gallery very soon. Every facet of this car was touched. Please look at the undersides in the gallery and the little underside inspection I have in the video. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. The owner said they put far more money into this than what it's worth. You will see when the services get posted. Thanks for looking!
Hey everyone, just wanted to say the car did sell yesterday and it's staying local which makes me happy. I'll have The MB Market team update the banner and mark it as sold since they helped me put together a deal with a bidder. Thanks!
Thank you to everyone who participated! We were close to the reserve! I appreciate the questions and interactions I had on this one.
We're in the final 30 minutes of the auction! Thanks for all the interest and some really good PMs and phone calls I've had in the background. At the current bid, you're essentially getting a free W140 as these wheels are worth a small fortune. This has been a fun one and I'm always happy representing Mercedes maintained by service psychopaths. It's right up my alley. Good luck everyone! Hopefully I'll be chatting with the winner very soon! Few worthy metnion: -Head gasket done -Refinished 19" Monoblocks with NEW Michelins that are probably worth a little north of $6,000. Lips were not painted over but repolished. -Original paint -Window sticker -Records from new! -Open wallet maintained since it rolled off the lot -Cloth JDM W140 floor mats -Completely gone through suspension
Good morning everyone and thanks for the bids/comments for the last week. Let me know if there are last minute questions to answer. Happy bidding!
@AxleAll the seat controls work including the seat back and seat bottom heating elements. The last owner replaced one of the seat switches in the last couple years (because the backlighting wasn't working) and the lumbar works for both seats although the driver seat lumbar takes time to inflate. Thanks!
@AxleAlways happy to answer any questions!
@AxleThe records show the head gasket and valve cover gasket replacement in 2017, photo 322. Thanks re the video! As far as rattles, not at all. It's a solid W140.
@dpblues2000 Congrats! Great chatting with you, should be an easy transaction. Thanks for everyone participating.
Final moments everyone! These are bargains when you compare them to the low grill 3.5s. You get 90% of the driving experience for a fraction of the cost. Might be the best double date car ever made.
Good luck everyone! Hopefully I’ll be chatting with the winner here soon.
We’re in the final hours of the auction! I’m excited to see where this one ends up. I’m working today, but I’ll be monitoring it on my phone, so you might have 30 minute delays between me answering any last minute questions. But I’ll be around for the final moments. Good luck everyone. A few worth while mentions: -Recent restoration in Germany -High quality repaint -High quality interior reupholstery job -All the wood is excellent -No rust -Clean underside -Very healthy motor and snappy transmission Please watch the video above to get a good vibe of the car. Thanks everyone.
@UncleBuchOh weird, good call. I have undersides -- let me get The MB Market team to post them. I have 53 of them on my phone. I'm uploading them right now.
That bid just about covers the cost of buying 19" Monoblocks WITHOUT new Michelin tires!
@Max100500 I just went down to the car and scrubbed on it for a few minutes and the seatbelt stain is coming off with some light duty fabric cleaner. I reckon you'll have to removed the seatbelt and soak it in a tub of water and soap to extract it all, but it will come out. Everyone please check out the PPI video and undersides added to the gallery. I hope it comes across how well maintained this one is.
@GoBoGoWe appreciate it! They’re so satisfying to drive too. I’m happy to report they don’t JUST look good.
Just checking in on everyone to see if I can help answer any lingering questions since were halfway through the auction. Thanks everyone for the early bids.
@Max100500You can always ask questions! That spotting on the belt was something I had asked about as well. The first owner of 18 years owned a packaging business and apparently that was something related to their prep materials spilling. I had planned to try and clean that over the weekend to see how good it can be- suppose replacing a belt wouldn't be impossible if it can't come clean. I, along with the owner of the car, are sensitive to smoke. I'm confident in saying this car has never been smoked in. Thanks for the compliments! Undersides and a PPI video to come as well!
Everyone welcome to the auction of arguably the best maintained W140 I've ever come across. I am hosting this auction for a very well known Atlanta based Mercedes-Benz enthusiast with whom I know very well. He's one of the few people that give myself a run for my money when it comes to dialing in an older car. Please watch the very thorough videos and view all the images in the gallery. The entire service history is photographed and it starts from day one. The car is located in Marietta, Georgia at a collector car storage shop and will remain there until it sells. I'm more than happy to host showings, take phone calls, Facetime, or text with whoever. Transparency is the name of the game which is important on a W140. Thanks for stopping by! Happy bidding.
One thing to remember is I’m not Dean nor have the long standing reputation of him. Yet! You have to start somewhere and I’m hoping my cars will command a premium like his in a few years. Factory services and thorough maintenance is my brand. People will appreciate that soon enough. Thanks for the comments. Obviously wish I went for more, but I’m happy it’s going to a good home. That’s the most important part and more importantly, I know I got the car as good as I could while retaining originality. I’m confident to put my name and stamp of approval on this one!
@ilpatino Try! Let's see if the blocks it -- I'm curious lol
@Bergness98 Congrats! I'm psyched for you. I'll give you a shout here in a minute. Can't wait to chat.
@ilpatino Yes, reserve has been lifted! Car is selling today.
Is that a K.O. bid? It will be a long while before another like this hits the market. Can't wait to chat with the winner -- whoever that may be!
Still one helluva car at $25K ;)
@ilpatino It's one helluva car at $19k that's for sure.
God I want this.
@ilpatinoThe car was dealer serviced up until January of this year. It’s nice seeing MB parts on it. I tried to use OEM and OE parts as much as I could to where it made sense. The car deserved it. Even used wires from a wiring harness from a M278 to rebuild the harness!
Thanks @dean_Laumbach for the comment. Means a lot.
Final hours of the auction! I'm working today, but I'll try and answer any last minute questions in a timely manner. -Original paint -New wiring harnesses -Immaculate underside and no rust -New fuel and ignition system -Original condition -Rare color combo -M119!!!
We're less than 24 hours away from the ending of this auction. I really appreciate the comments and it's awesome to see how the users of The MB Market are receiving this car. It gives me hope in the future of Mercedes-Benz collectors and enthusiasts. This thing is so special and nice and I'm so happy to have it here.
Hey everyone! Welcome to the auction of this lovely W111 cabriolet. I'm helping sell this for a good friend and fellow Mercedes-Benz collector just north of Atlanta, Georgia. You'll be seeing a lot of their cars on my profile in the coming months as I help them sell their collection and consolidate into just a few really special cars. This is a really nice W111. Please sift through the gallery I put together and watch the video I made as well. You'll find most of your answers there, but feel free to PM me or comment here if I missed anything or need clarification on anything. The writeup mentions all of the flaws and I pointed them out in the photos/video There's not a lot! This is a really competent vehicle that has good bones, excellent interior, no rust, and good wood.
Just checking in on everyone. Let me know if interested parties need additional info or photos or want a phone call. Car is tucked away in my home garage safe and sound. Thanks for the love so far.
These are so underrated. Other than a 500L, these are better than any 560, 450 or 380, I swear. Hey, keeps them cheap for people actually in the know, so it's good for me.
@dean_LaumbachGlad to see we share the same opinion. Making everything “perfect” on an already nice example will 100% make them look off. There is such a thing as over doing it which negatively impacts the car.
This would make the world's heaviest coffee table stand. I'm joking. ....not really. These engines are so uncommon and parts are so hard to find that I imagine this is essential to any one of the M100 guys. I'm excited to see where this ends up. The box looks like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Also wanted to let you all know this was also my car which my brother and I did a full mechanical refurbishment on in similar detail. This was before I knew how to use a camera and let @gasmotorcars take care of the auction for me. https://thembmarket.com/1972-mercedes-benz-280se-4-5 I feel it's a good reference point for my work. Thanks for all the love and interaction so far!
@rattytubes If you’re lucky you can find a nice unit on eBay. But this has zero UV damage or discoloration, so I wanted to leave it original. There’s a company in California that redoes the wood too - can’t remember the name, but I’d be afraid of it not matching it the rest. I’ve seen that before in cars I’ve interacted with. The cabin just loses homogeneity. The car is so nice and original that I didn’t feel the need to mess with it. It tells the car’s story and legitimizes it, in my option. I’m just a big softie for originality I guess!
@zachmacIt regulates temperature throughout all ranges. Monovalve operates as intended. It was hot outside since I’m in Atlanta, that’s why it was on full cold. I didn’t feel like sweating. I also was running it on the low fan setting. I didn’t have it on AUTO which would have had it running at full chat.
@TBradI poked the reset at a red light since I hadn’t pressed it before to test it. I’m happy it broke on me and not whoever wins the car. All of these gears turn to oily stale Oreos over time which is why I stock them at home. Lesson learned is to not ignore known weak spots, but to vigorously test them! It’s now one less thing to break in the future. Thanks for the comment and the positive support!
@ilpatinoThey're a labor of love, that's for sure. No one really knows how to maintain these throughout their lifespan, so it's hard to find good ones. Even good ones need work! But SO worth it. These are great cars -- excited to see your Japanese car.
Hey everyone! Welcome to the auction of this lovely and rare W124. I've put my heart and soul into this listing and car and did about 8 months of mechanical recon and driving it around to get it super dialed in for the next owner. This is a one family owned middle Georgia car with original milage and original paint. I added most of my photos I took of the cleaning, mechanical work, and wiring harness rebuilds in the gallery. Please feel free to watch the lengthy video I posted as well. I'm sure whoever buys this car will be doing so sight unseen, so I wanted to cover all my bases and make everyone feel confident in the product they're buying. The car had been sitting for about 10 years previous to me getting my hands on it. A reputable MB shop went through the fuel system in January and then I took care of the rest. I like restoring these cars in my free time and have all of the factory service manuals, so I follow the repair guides to factory spec and have some classical training on these from several old heads with 50+ years of experience each working on Mercedes-Benz. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm available for Facetime, phone calls, texting, whichever you prefer. This is a collector grade E420 and I hope I presented it as such. I also did a full paint correction with CARPRO CQUARTZ ceramic coat in preparation for the sale since these clear coats are fragile at this stage of life. Thanks for looking! I'll be here in the comments interacting with everyone. Thanks for the positive comment @dean_Laumbach your listings and cars are my goal post.
Leno just dropped this video on the 500E which is cool, if anyone is interested. Love seeing these cars get attention from the likes of him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hveWX6MvBWk&t=1552s
Want to put a good word in for the seller and the hardtop. I got to do the photoset and the top is in great shape. All the work he did to it was outstanding. I’ve driven around in SLs with pano tops and they’re LOVELY to be in.
I got to spend considerable time in this car before Blakley bought it. The previous owner is THE GUY you want to buy a car from -- he's an open wallet maintenance nut (I know you're lurking in here, so hello!). This car is tight. Suspension felt new. Steering was great. Engine felt healthy. Bid with confidence. This is a nice one. Nice enough I almost bought it before Blakley got his hands on it.
@donna Congrats! One helluva car for the money. I'll reach out shortly. Really excited for you.
I'm around for the final moments for last minute questions. Good luck everyone! I'll chat with the winner soon.
@mbfan2024Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad my efforts translate!
Final day of the auction! I'm working today, so if I don't respond immediately, that's why. I will be available during the final moments, however! I got a questions about tire tread depths: Fronts are at 7mm and the rears are at 8mm. Let's have fun with this one. It's a super nice car which is why I'm representing it on this account. I won't post mid-grade cars or junk here. Thanks everyone.
With 1 day remaining, please feel free to watch the video where I do a pre-purchase inspection on the car with an underside walkaround! The car is mechanically dialed in and shouldn't give the buyer any issues. This is a get in and drive kind of car. I'm here to answer any additional questions. With fall arriving, it's my favorite season to own a convertible. I always tend to buy drop tops this time of year. Plus, W209 heated seats will boil your kidneys and with the windows up, there's like no wind buffeting, so cool mornings are insanely pleasant, especially with a hot cup of coffee.
Thanks for the early bids everyone. I’ll please feel free to reach out if you have any more questions! I’ll be here.
Welcome everyone to the auction of this lovely M113 powered W209! Please sift through the gallery -- I tired to shoot everything on the car as honestly and as informatively as possible. Also please view the video provided as I cover the exterior, interior, undersides, driving impressions, and provide a pre-purchase inspection for interest bidders. This car came out of a collection in Alabama who I am friends with the owner, so I'm assisting him with the sale. The car is stored at Moto Escape here in Marietta, Georgia snuggled between a 14k mile 500SL, 1,700 mile Testarossa, and a lovely '60s Alfa Romeo. I am more than happy to show the car and provide test drives to locals. Feel free to comment here or PM me. I'm also available for phone calls and/or Facetime! Let me know if you need supplementary photos or video if I missed anything. Thanks!
I just wanted to put a good word out to the seller and his W111. I had the honor of shooting and filming this car for this auction and the car presents wonderfully. I tried my hardest to represent it as it sits and she's just a lovely old bird. It drives even better and I would have taken off into the sunset with it if that didn't come with a grand theft auto charge! Seller is awesome and every interested party can bid with confidence on this one. Have fun with this one!
Guys, thank you so much for the kind words and all the bids! It’s not about the money but who the car goes to here. I had a chat with @rusart4521 and I’m so glad he’s the new steward of this rare W210. Sorry to everyone that missed out. I had some good conversations with a few of you before it ended. Thanks for attending. I’m hoping in the next moth or so my 57k mile green on tan one owner ‘94 E420 is ready to be posted. Just finished building a wiring harness and getting it buttoned up for auction. Keep your eyes peeled on that one.
Good luck everyone! I'll be chatting with one of you soon -- little tied up with work so I might call in about an hour.
@JER219 I have it stored at a collector car storage facility in Marietta, GA. 30060 area code.
@coastal8Gotta mark your territory.
I made a quick pre-purchase inspection video of the underside for the interested parties. Really trying my best to accurately represent the car for the sight unseen bidders. See you all tomorrow.
You have to establish virtual dominance sometimes.
Y'all are wild men.
@gsxrHey! I’m helping sell this car on behalf of the client and original owner. I personally have her title in my safe at home signed and ready to go. I’ve helped a few people do this on this profile before. Just handling the sale and recondition since I know how the navigate this sphere and work on these cars. P.S. Thanks for all your comments and insights on the 500E board over the years. You’ve answered a lot of my questions based on old posts I’ve referenced in the past.
Glad to see MB enthusiasts appreciate this thing. Cool interiors and rare interior colors are in vogue right now. See weird Porsche interiors as well as BMW interiors that are uncommon. They all seem to beckon collector values as they age. Market trends definitely aim at this becoming a future collectable.
Just to clarify for others since I'm getting messages about it: the yellow oily stuff on the valve covers in the engine bay is not leaking engine oil or grime. That is factory cosmoline from day one when the car was assembled in Sindelfingen. It's a protective coating sprayed on during assembly when new. You'll spot it in the engine bay and also underneath the car and in the wheel wells.
@tcstrakerAll good! Smell is important to me on any car. I can tell you that this smells close to factory. There was never any sort of air fresheners used ever on this car. It has that particular blue dye leather smell you get with navy Mercedes interiors. And since this is a pre-facelift W210, the leather quality is way better than a later car so it has a whiff of W124 in it. It's really pleasant and clean.
Just to clarify that this car does not have a biodegradable wiring harness. That was an issue on earlier models primarily in 94-95 seen on W140s, R129s, and W124s. Again, feel free to ask any questions. I’ll be here.
Welcome to the auction of this lovely E420 W210 featuring the venerable M119 quad cam V8 power plant that was carried over from the W124 and W140. I'm extremely pleased to feature this car on The MB Market in this extremely rare color combination and in wonderful condition showing one owner history with window sticker and service records. Paint meter readings and underside pictures will be getting uploaded here shortly, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, please flip through the gallery and watch the video. Both go into great detail on the condition of this example and how it is like to drive. PM me or comment with any questions. More than happy to have a phone call or Facetime or supply any supplementary photos/videos for concerning bidders. The car shows as nicely in person as it does in photos. And who doesn't love a blue interior?!
@8isenoughSince I got to interact with the car and he owner, I asked him about the minor on the Carfax and he has actually sent a dispute to Carfax since he remembers where and what he was doing on that day and there was no accident. What had happened was he was out having a nice dinner and someone was parking too close to his E43. He politely told them to not park too close to the car and they ignored his warnings. Fearing for a door ding or damage, he called the police and the police report attached itself to the car. I chatted with the owner last week about this and he said he had put for a dispute the day previous. I looked at the bumper when I photographed the car and saw no signs of paintwork (and I'm a truffle pig when it comes to paintwork). Hope that clarifies!
I got to photo/video this car and I really couldn't fault it or find much to nitpick. Seller is great and his E43 is supremely clean to boot. The RENNtech bits don't hurt either! It is a killer modern sports sedan.
This is the moment where you buy wheels then go find a car to put them on.
This looks like a nice S123 that was restored in the same vein as my cars with similar amounts of love and passion. Really nice work here, good luck. The S123 is probably the most durable car on the planet and its components are infinitely rebuildable. Not to mention they have an insane amount of character and driving feedback. That OM617A in a long roof is a buy it for life kind of car.
Dear god, what a cool car. Driver spec Evo II you can put miles on. Can't wait to see this one @Smcase22 please bring it by.
Late the the party, let’s do this.
@Jim_RosenthalThe cleanest Malachite Green W124 E420 -- like Dean Laumbach nice. Going through the ignition system with right now and it'll be listed next month. I might not sell it just yet. I'm on the fence and love driving it.
@Agschmidt Congrats! Happy it's going to a good home. Completely bittersweet ending. I'll reach out!
Good luck to the bidders! I'm here for any final questions. We added up the invoices and we put about $8000 in parts into the thing. Every system has been touched and brought back to new using quality parts. I have a gallery of a few extra hundred pictures that I'll send to the winner documenting in nerdy detail all of the things we fixed. We just didn't want to blow up the gallery with pictures of that stuff.
With the auction ending in 23 hours, please feel free to PM me or comment below. Again, more than happy to have a phone call with interested parties. Thanks everyone and good luck.
@tbssdThey’re addictive and incredibly satisfying to own/drive. Some pictures have been uploaded documenting the trans rebuild. We went deep and replaced every seal. Photos have been uploaded. Here is what we used for the steel clutch packs: https://www.ebay.com/itm/283338012105 Here’s what we used for the friction rings: https://www.ebay.com/itm/225215844437?itmmeta=01J3AK6HH57KN5EC3M1VF0033Q&hash=item346fe91055:g:VpcAAOSwJ6BjUvMW&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwNs6nSXE7AHJdhU6lV9HtvpZWeXx6IdJUe467k%2FaANfV%2FipMvoUul6YOG8IboOFjgbgnY2pXm90DzoGSlq0xc7UY5o0HP2S6avz0ZOVUIsXzKO4HKxeq1ZBrIEq5sJJuKwODRF5Qn%2FHMMBsIuvYFObdmn%2Bp%2BMZg4AFp427ldzPcJaCy1LROcNAQacJh54X6xYiDzQOWboZ5RDDyv016k1NoKj0KIimGDj3j92JUWyhPiQOxRPP1jGFwoKWIaAN%2FBEA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR86YmtOaZA The seals were an Elring master kit mixed with some NOS MB stuff we have stowed away. Superior Transmission Parts Shift Correction Calve Body Kit Genuine MB Vacuum Modulator as well. Those are some of the important bits.
@tbssd1981 was the switch over year when Mercedes-Benz started to treat the horsehair. I had the seats out of this car when servicing the rails and doing a deep clean and there's wasn't a pile of brown dust underneath. The pad is not degraded, is still supportive, and intact. What's happening is there is a thin fabric membrane attached to the back of the MB-Tex where the stitching attaches to which has just been damaged from the wear, hence the delaminated seat ridges. I will provide the parts invoices and photos of the transmission build to the gallery here. I have a bunch of that logged on my phone gallery. Give me a day or so and The MB Market team will upload those here shortly. I'll tag you when they are up. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
@Jim_RosenthalI have no idea how this one is going to go. It’s such a unique example with the Herculean effort and detail we put into restoration on an otherwise “normal” classic Mercedes. https://thembmarket.com/1972-mercedes-benz-280se-4-5 This was also our car that we restored. Same effort was put into the 300SD as our 280SE. All we can do is sit back and see what happens. There’s nothing logical about what we did to this W126 other than we just really really love these cars.
@markwilsonIt's a milled metal cap that deletes the EGR on the OM617A. Over time, the EGR will clog up the intake manifold and in some instances that debris will shoot into the engine. It also increase the cylinder head temp to give a little bit more power and better gas mpg usually increases up to 1-3 mpg more. These OM diesels run better with this little modification. https://www.doomsdaydiesel.net/product-page/om617-egr-delete
@Jim_RosenthalAll services and fluids are up to date. We have about $8,000 in just parts put on the car over the past few years. Please look over the provided invoices. We did everything possible to the car other than what you noticed which would have effected originality. The rear seat, luckily, is in perfect shape. It’s just the front driver that needs a little love and the front passenger bottom if you wanted to make it perfect. That said, they’re still supportive and comfortable on long drives, so it wouldn’t need to be taken care of immediately. GAHH sells MB-Tex covers that match OE perfectly. I’ve used them exclusively on my other cars. The cruise control amp needs rebuilt. It intermittently works. Old capacitors, etc. It’s about a $110 fix. Every system was touched and dialed from the operational vacuum door locks all the way to removing the door panels to grease the window regulators with MB spec lithium grease. We’ve been trained by master-techs who worked on these cars when new and followed factory guidelines using Mercedes-Benz factory service books from a curated library in our family using OEM parts when available.
@janos_zAppreciate the comment. Really don't know what happened to the quarter panel. It must've happened sometime in the past 40 years during the original owner's tenure.
@trashpanda911With those miles, it certainly would have. M117s are incredibly durable engines. My uncle has one with nearly 700k miles on it. With 233k miles, it would have seen a top end rebuild at some point in its life. When I did my driving video for @Smcase22, I was specifically looking for blue smoke on acceleration since they need valve guides/seals when tired and oil leaks into the combustion chamber on acceleration as those round out over time. This car didn't blow smoke. Also when they are improperly maintained, you will hear tapping under the valve cover as the camshaft lobes/rocker arms flat spot. No such signs of that. Also the timing chain tensioner will tire out and you'll hear timing chain slap on the inside of the valve cover on start up. This car also didn't do that, even when cold. I have a 110k mile Euro M117 in my fleet and this engine feels super healthy compared to mine. Considering those miles, it was maintained and rebuilt at some point since it showed no signs of issues that pop up on these. Without records, it's hard to tell -- but as someone who has rebuilt a bunch of these motors myself, the engine felt good and with the high miles, it was maintained as such to make it to those miles. Those are my observations. Make of them what you will!
@Bankrep40The rear springs were original and tired, so the car was rearing up in the front like a power boat, so we made the decision to change them out and upgrade while we were in there. I had them on my Midnight Blue car (see my profile), so I put them in here as it modernized the ride. H&R Sport Springs reduced the wallowing body roll these have from the factory and make handling flatter without compromise to ride quality. It was a huge improvement over the originals.
@ChicoBTexas The 300SD is on H&R lowering springs with 3 dot spring pads in the rear and 2 dot spring pads in the front. I had used the same formula on a 1983 300SD, and the ride height turned out perfectly even. I do agree that the front is a bit lower than I had anticipated. I had a larger wheel on my ‘83 (see my profile for the blue ‘83) so I miscalculated it with the OE “14 Bundt. The front can be raised up further by replacing the 2 dot spring pad with a 4 dot pad. There has been no scrubbing or fitment issues at the current ride height, so I decided to let it be.
Everyone, welcome to the first day of my auction going live! I will be around to answer any questions bidders have. Please flip through my photos of my mechanically restored W126 and of the service records I have in the gallery. This was a labor of love my brother and I poured our hearts into in getting this car back on the road and driving as it should. Backstory: We discovered this car about five years ago. The owner was a client of my uncle's Mercedes-Benz specialty shop (German Auto Sales and Service) who had been maintaining this car since the '90s. They bought it brand new in 1981 and after a lot of back and forth, let us finally buy it on December 23rd of 2021 as we promised to make the car right again since it had been sitting for a couple years -- used primarily to go grocery shopping since about 2019. The family just never used it much recently, because they worked for Delta as pilots and were just never home and wanted garage space back (car was garage kept its whole life, hence the original paint). We both restore Mercedes-Benz in our free time with my brother being a professional Mercedes-Benz technician at DC MotorWerks, so this is what we worked on after work and on weekends, splitting it as a commuter vehicle between system refreshes. Some of you might recognize the car in the Atlanta area from car shows, MBCA meets, and it pulling 100 MPH in the left lane of Georgia 400 as there are basically no clean Light Ivory 300SDs left. It's a true survivor with decades added to its life after our hard work and expertise has been put into every system of the car. More undersides and a very detailed cold start, acceleration, POV driving, and walkaround video should be uploaded to the auction here shortly! I'm available to chat via phone, email, or PM whenever. Please reach out to me if need be. Thanks for looking
@Daniel75I can shed some insight on the cruise control repair. I’ve been using this guy for years at this point. Every old Mercedes I buy has inop cruise control. It will be the amplifier which is behind the kick panel below the steering wheel on the driver side. Takes 10 minutes to remove it with a short Philips head and a 10mm wrench. The solders/capacitors in the amp go bad and need repair. This guy is good, fast, and cheap. http://www.cruisecontrolrepair.com/
@SuperMooseMy very first car was a '89 190E 2.6 back in 2008. They're soooo good. You'll like the little economical 2.3. It's sewing machine smooth and has plenty of power. I bought a $700 Smoke Silver on Burgundy 190E 2.3 last summer I bought for a cheap car challenge I did with some coworkers and I loved it. I'm super jealous.
Congrats @SuperMoose I got busy and literally forgot to bid again. Nice buy.
Ah screw it, I like a rebuilt title car.
Why do I like this so much? It seems like a friendly thing.
I had the opportunity to shoot and drive his car for the seller -- I see concerns about the milage being actual in the comments. I've owned a ton of W126s, both low milage ones and high milage ones, and the miles feel accurate based on touch points in the cabin, suspension, paint, leather, seat wear, interior smell, and steering tightness. It's a really nice example. I'd love to see the car go from one good home to another.
Additional questions: Can we get paint meter readings as well?
@quantumorbitNice quick clean battle. Thanks for the adrenaline rush. I’m also with you considering the corrosion and needed paintwork. Cool car, really wanted it, but just see too many dollars bills that it needs immediately to make it what I want. Good luck to the seller. Great responses and honesty — more people should take note of your interactions. Hit me up if you wanted to sell it for what it ended on. Thank you!
I always like duking it out.
I want to put in a good word in this car. I got to photo and video it for The MB Market and as an owner of a very sorted ‘81 500SL, this was probably the best one I’ve driven with the second best one being his blue one that sold a few months ago. This car is WONDERFUL. Please bid with confidence for guys who are buying sight unseen. It drives spectacularly well.
@cosee16I saw a invoice from 2013 from the records and the date codes kiiiiinda look like it says 2013 so that all lines up. Tire choice are limited in stock size but it looks like it’s a choice between Yokohama Advans or Khumo PS31s. Not a Michelin but definitely not bad choices either. The stock Gullideckels would have to say — they’re too iconic not to. Thanks for the interaction!
Kind of hard to tell from the pictures, but do the tire date codes say 2013?
@cosee16Thanks for the reply! I also forgot to ask if there was any cracks in the dash that I might’ve missed in the gallery. Appreciate it.
Neat car! Had a few questions: other than the bubbling behind the fender flare, is there any more rust or corrosion on the body I’m not seeing? I’ve been there done that with crusty cars, but I’d maybe be willing to dabble in it again for a 16v — just want to know if there’s something else lurking since I’d be buying sight unseen and would be repairing it, which is expensive and hard to get right. Another commenter mentioned better, clearer undersides. I see a crispy front sway bar and some orange, fuzzy hardware underneath that spooks me. Would love more detailed undersides. I combed through your Bring a Trailer listing and didn’t see much extra there. I’ll throw a bid in the ring to show I’m serious since a comment like mine requires legwork on your end. Thank you so much.
If I knew anything about importing cars, I just buy this and be done with it. This is neat.
Congrats! That brought a pretty strong number. Happy to see people still like these cars as much as I do. A W210 with an M113 is something that you can't go wrong with.
Just wanted to make another comment about this SL. Please do watch the video I made for the seller. The car is an absolute gem and is incredibly nice and well preserved. These are so slept on by enthusiasts. Euro M110 is so so much better than the ones we got here in the states.
I just wanted to say just how beautiful this thing is and I'm sad I won't be buying it. Good luck to the winner.
Just want to chime in here and say I had the opportunity to photograph and video this car for The MB Market and it it gave me such good vibes. You can tell the seller cares about his cars and likes the R107 platform considering he has another Euro R107 in his hangar that's in concourse condition. The standout for me on this one is all the original plating under the car and in the engine bay, the tightness of the suspension, the paint quality (I've owned like 3 Midnight Blue on Palomino cars -- what a combo), and that Euro M110 that pairs sooooo well with this chassis. If I didn't already have a '81 500SL R107, I've buy the heck out of this one. It's an absolute sweetheart of a car.
Morning! A few questions about the car: Listing says driver door and rear bumper were "refinished." Does that mean repainted? Is there anyway the seller can post paint meter readings? I see the minor in the Carfax and mentioned front end cosmetic damage. Are those the scrapes under the front bumper lip or something else I'm just not seeing? Are there any dealer fees on top of the winning upon delivery? Are there any more physical service invoices other than the one sheet and the provided VMI? Thank you!
Congrats to mbfan2024! I’m super happy the car is going in your collection. Really did think it would go for more, so I’d say that’s a good buy. Thanks for participating everyone.
I’m here for the final moments of the auction. Original paint, all services up to date, super clean car. It will have no issues with the winner flying in and driving it home. We got this one super dialed in. Good luck everyone!
@W3159365We can totally work something out, that’s no issue.
@mikelacaIt does not have an AUX port. I think only the 2003s got them. I've been using a FM/AM Bluetooth device plugged into the cigarette lighter to listen to music/podcasts.
As we enter the final day of the auction for this W220, I'll be on standby to answer any remaining questions bidders will have. Feel free to PM me and I'm more than happy to have a phone call with interested parties since that's the best way to feel out a car and owner, in my opinion. I'm hopeful the listing I put together covers every facet of this super clean S500. I'll be on standby today -- responses might have 30 minute delays since I am working today. Good luck everyone! This is one of the cleanest and nicest specs I've seen in a while, has all the maintenance up to date, and is nicer than my 40k mile S430 I owned last winter. I'm really happy and proud to represent this car for my dad.
Driving video and walkaround video is up showing all the operational functions of the car. Again, please feel free to ask any questions. I'm here for you guys!
@dunlapimports The color is shapeshifting for sure. It's almost a seafoam green in the light, silver in the shade, and as you can see, a little brown when the sun starts to set low in the horizon. It's a really unique color. Different cameras and lenses will always show the car differently as far as color goes.
See my comment directly below yours — your concerns have already been addressed via verbiage and will dissolve under the video walkaround of the interior. Video evidence is indeed irrefutable. Seatbelt is admittedly the way it is and I missed a spot under the steering wheel. I’m good at detailing, but I’m only human ;) I always appreciate your interaction on all of my auctions! I’m happy they usually stir up enough energy to leave a comment.
To all interested parties, I was going through the pictures and a few photos of the front seats make the Designo leather look dirty. I can assure you that it is the perforations in the leather doing weird things to the lens during my photo shoot. I covered this issue in the interior walkaround video (that's coming here in the next few days) and zoomed in on the seats to show that the dye is indeed not delaminating off the leather and show the seat isn't stained or dirty.
Everyone welcome to this survivor example W220 S500 in Designo Silver! First things first, this is my dad's car -- I know how to navigate the auction sphere better than him, so that's why I'm representing it. I also only like to sell cars of the highest quality on this account and this W220 is exactly that. That said, the guy knows how to pick out a good car and usually has unrealistic expectations when it comes to used car's condition when he's hunting down examples to purchase. When purchased, this was described as mint by the seller, but he didn't quite think it was when it arrived from California, hence the $5,000 he threw at it immediately before driving down from Nashville to take delivery of it. My brother was the service technician for this car who works at a high-end shop that specializes in AMGs. If anyone has questions, I can always get him to chime in. This is probably my dad's 70th Mercedes-Benz of the 200+ cars he's owned. He's a curator of only the nicest examples and always has been since he fell in love with the brand in the '70s. He's selling this W220 because he recently bought a house on a mountain side with super steep hills that occasionally gets snow, so he bought a AWD SUV and this S500 became redundant in his collection, not to mention he refuses to buy a 4MATIC S-Class since he firmly believes they should be RWD. The MB Market will be uploading YouTube videos demonstrating the driving quality and cosmetic condition of this car sometime soon, so stay tuned. Please PM me or comment any questions you have and I'll respond as fast as possible. If you need supplementary video of photos I will provide them immediately. Thanks for looking everyone!
For those that missed out on this one, I have a 1981 300SD in Light Ivory over Palomino with the same miles, one owner, and full service records coming up for sale soon that my brother (AMG and classic Mercedes-Benz specialist technician) are psychotically mechanically restoring to like new condition. It will be very similar to this one. Keep an eye on my account in the coming months!
@NBMTX Congrats! You got an insane W126, I'll reach out to you as soon as I get the email.
@thirdstrikeAppreciate it! Looks like someone is going to steal it. I want it to go to a good home. The Centras are worth probably $1500 alone not including the fresh Michelins.
Good luck to the final bidders as the auction comes to a close, I want to say I'm lifting the reserve since I have my eyes set on another classic Mercedes-Benz to add to the collection. I love this car to death and it's never put a foot wrong during my ownership. I'm super happy to chat to the winner here soon!
@blakleyleonardHappy to have you and thanks!!
@thirdstrikeI looked at that when the car was up in the air yesterday and it seems to be coming out of the air intake box. All of my OM617/As have done that in the past since they all have a little bit of blowby which sucks crankcase oil through the breather tube and drips out of the drains in the air filter box which is right over the turbo. Car doesn't blow blue smoke as if it's sucking oil through the turbo and it wasn't mentioned when I last had it serviced by a classic Mercedes-Benz master-tech who was working in that area.
As we come to the final hours of the auction, I'll be on stand by for any last minute questions. The car, while presents nicely in photos, really does stand its own in person and is shockingly competent to drive. I'm really proud of my dialed in 300SD and the next owner will love it.
Welcome everyone to the auction of this wonderful 2009 Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC in one of the prettier color combos I've seen on a W221. The MB Market should be uploading the stack of service records here in the next day, but the car was babied both cosmetically and mechanically with an open wallet. Our local specialist AMG/Mercedes-Benz independent shop here in the Atlanta area (DC MotorWerks) went through the car just prior to the auction to get it truly dialed in and ready for the next owner with a hefty $11,000 bill that will be uploaded soon. I'm an open line of communication via PM, email or phone if need be. Thanks!
@thirdstrikeFrame and underside are in fantastic shape. No rust, no buckled rails, and no chewed off factory underlining from shady tree mechanics lifting the car improperly. I am getting it on a two post lift this evening and will be uploading undersides today. I have just been waiting on access for a proper lift that provides decent photography.
Not sure when The MB Market is going to post the video, so here's the link to it in the meantime: https://youtu.be/qRIfOsx3Qcw
@shervinatorGrey market 500SE/L is on my bucket list. I have a ‘81 500SL with that engine and they’re completely undervalued at the moment. Your car sounds absurd. It’s a small club of “if you know, you know” with Euro M117s. Wonderful sounding car you have and I couldn’t agree more with you.
@shervinatorSuper rare color combo indeed. I see a decent number of W126s rolling around the Atlanta metro area but they’re all painted in metallics with clear coat failure, brake dust stain wheels, tired suspension with the rear sagging and the front end pointing to the sky, burning oil when pulling away from lights, etc. They’re though, but holy hell do people not keep up with maintenance on them. It’s definitely a testament to their durability when you see beat examples keeping up with traffic. Clean ones like mine are indeed getting super hard to find. 722.3s are also getting to the age where the friction disk materials on the clutch packs are just flaking off killing a bunch of transmissions. I am friends and family with three people in town with these trans who are losing gears in theirs all at the same time. Not a lot of weak points on a OM617A powered S-Class but the transmission are starting to show signs of failure at this age. I’m super happy mine has a full rebuild. Car will be rock solid for anyone who buys it.
I’m really proud to present my 1983 300SD on The MB Market! I’ve owned five W126s in the past and this has been the current daily driver I’ve been using here in Atlanta for a while now. The W126 is in my top three favorite chassis Mercedes-Benz has built over the years and this example is one of the best I’ve owned yet. From the incredible service records, the paint quality, to how usable and dead reliable it’s been in modern Atlanta meat-grinder traffic, there isn’t much to complain about. The Centra wheels look fantastic against the Midnight Blue paired with the OEM+ lowering I did the the car to give it the proper stance and agility I believe they should’ve come with from the factory. Please look through the gallery and I’ll be in touch via comments or private messages. A walkaround, cold start, and lengthy driving video will be uploaded by The MB Market crew here shortly. I’m available to chat through a phone call and you’re all welcome to come see and drive the car as well. Happy bidding!
Congrats to @amusicianslife, I can't wait to see the car at some point. Couldn't be going to a better home. Well fought battle! Shipping costs made me bow out early. Wish you were closer to Atlanta!
@MorrisThanks for the timely and succinct reply! You answered most of my questions! Thanks again for doing a little extra leg work, I know it can be a pain — I really appreciate it. Nothing else has come to mind, those were all the red flags I had questions about.
Just to confirm I'm a serious bidder, I'm throwing my hat in the ring with these other fellas. Thanks in advance.
I've got all my notes organized and had a few remaining questions! Bare with me, I apologize in advance -- I know these cars and engines well having owned a few and have torn some down in the past: 4/208 The damage on the front and rear passenger door, are those dents or bondo? Kind of hard to tell from the gallery. 31/208 Revisiting the clear coat question from day one. On the front right corner of the sunroof with it retracted, it looks like clear coat failure. Can we confirm or deny that is the case? I'm a bit of a paint nerd. Do we know if the paint is original? I didn't see paint meter readings. 129/208 Is that an oil leak under the engine or is that water from the A/C? Is there any rust under the sunroof valence? I know a lot of these installed in-period tent to rust decades later since they would hold moisture and/or pine straw, leaves, dirt, etc. Does it leak water through the sun visor area in the cabin when it rains outside? How about the trunk? Does it seal nicely when it's raining or does is there water intrusion? Any mold smell in the trunk? I know it's a pain, but can you show what's under the trunk mat or take pictures of the spare wheel well to show there's no rust? These like to rot out there. In the driving video, I heard a bunch of squeaks. Is that suspension components, old seat, or interior trim? Again, it's hard to tell. I see the valve cover gasket was done, where is all the oil stains coming from on the valve cover? Is it coming from the crankcase breather hose? Just trying to put together a complete picture. Not sure if there's excessive crankcase pressure slipping out from the pistons. I know these M110s are robust, but head-gaskets can scare me since these are notorious for having electrolysis issues on the head-bolts if you have to pull a head off since it's an aluminum head on an iron block. It's one reason why I'd love to know exactly where the oil leak is coming from. I also see original/old style transmission cooler lines coming from the radiator that look wet - is it coming from there? Oil pan looks greasy too -- is that gasket leaking or is the oil dripping from elsewhere higher on the engine? Also curious if it's a rear main seal. I'm fine with the tires being from 2015. Those Indy 500s get super hard when they age. $1,000 will get me Michelins on the Pentas. Basically want to confirm it isn't a head-gasket leaking down the side of the block.
Interesting W123 here. Any idea where the oil leak is coming from? Looks like it’s pretty heavy. With all the lovely maintenance done on it, just hoping it isn’t coming from a super labor intensive spot. Unfortunately draws questions, but I’m interested in the answers. Is there a spot of clear coat failure on the sunroof? I’ll be watching this one! I’ll comb through the pictures tonight and probably comment with a few more questions, but thanks for putting together a comprehensive listing! Weird car, which I like. Missed this car on BaT. Would love to give it a go this time around.
I wish I had enough cash laying around for this one. The wheels and body kit alone adds so much value to this R129. Whoever wins, I'm jealous. A 6.0 M119 would be nutty. Also good photographs! Makes a world of difference compared to the guys that shoot with their cellphones.
I have a set of these hanging in my garage that went on my W208 CLK55 AMG. They looked absurd on the car and will fit a 208/202 with the correct tire tire fitment. Super high quality wheel.
I've done an evaporator job on a W124 and the whole dash needs to be removed to get to it, same deal with the W/C140. I think M-B quoted something like 25 hours to do the job back in the day. I've heard tales of guys getting really fast at these back in the '90s and said they could do them in a single day. These were an issue on this chassis. It's very doable even if intimidating. Go slow and be careful of breaking stuff that would be hard to replace! I'm a masochist when it comes to these cars and am tempted to take the plunge since I hate myself. Really cool car. Sorry it broke on you!
This is such a good spec. Superb looking example with all the desirable options. Good luck!
Super happy with @willchao getting the car! Congrats! It's staying local which makes me excited. Thanks for the bids everyone!
@Gullideckel I was expecting to see you in the ring with these guys!
With 30 minutes to go, I will be at my computer ready to assist any bidders. Thanks and good luck.
Paint meter readings have been uploaded to the end of the gallery. Plus the two Michelins I have hanging up that come with the car. With the last day of the auction coming to a close, I will be answering additional questions anyone has and will have my phone nearby if anyone wanted to have a chat. Thanks everyone and good luck!
@dean_LaumbachThanks for the comment, Dean! Very much a sleeper car with the performance they punch. They look like a CLK430 but with the full on monoblocks as the only exterior aesthetic differentiator. And the badge, or course. @Gullideckel Let's see how long you can hold the top bid before someone comes in and stirs the pot again. I'm rooting for you! I'm going to get The MB Market to upload paint meter readings today. Keep an eye out for my comment when I confirm they're uploaded.
@HerbieLuckily for enthusiasts, you can source pretty much any part for this from the likes of FCP Euro, AutohausAZ, or your local Mercedes-Benz dealer to utilize your MBCA discount. The only thing NLA that I’ve encountered are the air bladders in the Contour Seats. These share a ton of parts with the W202 and W210, all readily available. Front brake rotors run about $300 each and is one of the more expensive consumables for the car (already done on this) and can be ordered to your front door in three minutes.
It’s good to see @herbie enter the battle! Had a good chat with you this morning. Thanks for reaching out. Again for anyone who missed it, PM me if you want to chat over the phone to feel me and the car out better. More than happy to just have a friendly conversation about the CLK or just Mercedes and cars in general.
Undersides have been added to the gallery including those brake rotor measurements mentioned earlier. I took paint meter readings last night, so I'll get with the guys to have them uploaded. It read 4.0 mils on every surface of the car. I will also add a reload of ceramic to the car tonight in preparation for the sale to it's ready to go for the next owner.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend! I totally forgot to mention anywhere in the auction that the CLK55 comes with two extra rear Michelin Cup 2s with the sale. I’ll get pictures of them up soon. They have about 60% life with 2019 date codes.
Just commenting to say this is a really cool spec. The M110 in a W126 would be a really satisfying car to drive with that high RPM redline with the bank vault 126 build quality.
@willchaoA-pillar fabric is not loose. Not sure why that was in the description. With any W208 this age, the foam used to back the fabric is super brittle on the a-pillar. There are two finger print indentations on the passenger side from where someone touched it before my ownership. I can PM you a picture of the "damage" once I get home and I'm with the car or have MBM upload it to the gallery. A-pillar fabrics are in good shape though and are not lose. All the adhesive is intact. If you're intimately familiar with this chassis, you'll notice the finger print in the correct lighting. It wasn't worth mentioning in my walkaround since it's so miniscule, but being an actual OCD owner, I notice these things since anything less than perfection is noticed on my part. Appreciate the comment. EDIT: Talked to The MB Market and they had a typo on their end. The fabric behind the vanity mirror has a small bubble forming. They will update the listing.
@parkerts610A C216 is on my must buy list. I’d like to grab one later this year as the winter daily. They’re unbelievably good. I used to have a 560SEC and I miss the pillarless coupe life.
@pilotbrother2003I had a 1999 C43 (the one in my bidding history) and then got this CLK two months later and promptly sold the C43 since the engine in this thing is magic. I threw OE+ suspension modifications and sway bars at the C43 and just couldn't get it to drive as good as the CLK, so it had to go. I think the Pilot Super Sports certainly help. That said, I think an Obsidian Black W202 C43 is one of my all time favorite designs. Sacco killed it with the body. I appreciate the positive comments! I put way too many hours in this listing.
I'm also getting with The MB Market to add pictures of the OE dealer purchased W208 fitted all-weather car cover and also the very period correct custom made car bra. All included in the sale.
@pilotbrother2003I would've loved to put a good track like that in there if I knew how YouTube copyright algorithms worked!
Welcome to the auction! A little back story on the car -- I bought this about a year ago from an ex-president of the MBCA Peachtree division who bought this car new from RBM and has been enjoying it since. People who are part of the club in Atlanta will probably be familiar with this car! It was stored in his climate controlled basement for its whole life which I continued to do at my house. I have all the dealer documentation in a laminated binder from new with all the original sales literature, plus some. The paint is all original with a Graphene ceramic coat. I can upload paint meter readings if anyone expresses interest. I have undersides being uploaded by The MB Market sometime today including brake rotor and pad measurements. All the service invoices are uploaded for your viewing pleasure in the gallery. Please comment or PM me for additional questions or supplementary photographs. I'm also more than happy to chat on the phone if need be. I'm a small time Mercedes-Benz collector and have now officially owned all North American variants of the W208. Selling because I'm wanting to break into the pre-merge AMG market. Thanks everyone!
I had a blast photographing this car for the site. It’s absurdly clean with cool options. My brother, who is a Mercedes technician, serviced this car during its current ownership and was drooling over it whenever it came in for service. Bid with confidence on this example.
This is what happens when I let my AMG obsessed girlfriend take over the computer and bid like a drunken megalomaniac for one of her Top 3 obtainable dream cars. It will pair nicely with her concourse condition 2002 CLK55 AMG already in the garage and is a long term vehicle for the fleet. Head bolts will get done soon and she's going to take care of all the other little issues to take this from a 90% car to 100%. They don't make vehicles like this anymore. What exist in the world are what we have to choose from. It's slim pickings at this point with only 153 in the states -- less, I'm sure, at this point, 15 years later. Thanks @blakleyleonard for listing a car we've always dreamed of obtaining and we appreciate the website for existing. It's never been so easy to buy collector grade Mercedes-Benz. We are going to be fine stewards for this machine.
@gavenchaknYou literally can't go wrong with a black on black AMG S-Class. I'm enamored by this spec. A ton of car for the money.
This is such a hard to find spec with this color combo and options. Amazing car.
The monoblocks on the W163s are super cool. One of my more favorite wheel designs AMG did and to see them on a SUV is a thing to behold. This is genesis for the sports SUV segment that is so popular today. It's a neat piece of automotive history. Plus you get an AMG M113 attached to it. This will be a good buy.
I've seen and driven this particular example and for the miles it's super nice. The owner has it dialed in with a bunch of new parts that need changing at these miles and had a 55-years-experience MB master tech go through the car to straighten out a few hard to diagnose issues. This is a super cool thing.
I am loving this battle. Truly a case of "find another." Should mention I bought a car from United Imports last month and had a good experience. The crew down there really loves quirky Euro cars.
Really good buy. If I had one of these, this is everything I'd do to it as well. Incredibly tasteful!
I can't help but love these Japanese market cars with the little engines and cloth seats. They're so endearing and unique here in the States.
Just want to comment that I love how high mileage, thoroughly documented W202 AMGs still fetch a nice premium since at these miles, a proper caretaker of these cars will go through all the suspension bushings and wear items to make them drive like new again. I have 165K on mine and the thing still feels like a billet of steel since it's been well taken care of. W202s age really well.
@AmgjunkieI imagine. My stock C43 feels light on its feet with the 4.3 M113 stuffed under the hood already. This would rip.
Curious to see how this auction ends. I imagine driving one of these back-to-back with my C43 AMG would be an interesting experience.
@DelucaRIt absolutely does wake up the car. It jumps off the line like an electric car and pulls like a savage all the way to redline. These engines are very impressive and incredibly slept on. Their time will definitely come.
Good buy! This was such a complete car that had every trouble area addressed.
This one has a cool story behind it too that wasn't covered in the ad. Whoever wins it, ask @gasmotorcars about it and they will tell you all about it.
@Jim_RosenthalThey feel so contemporary compared to everything else from that era. I've driven this one and it's tight as a drum. The road holding is incredible. The brakes grab high, steering is heavy and precise, and the road noise is pretty low.
I hope this goes to a good home! It's such a fantastic car.
Well that was my first auction car I've ever won. That was terrifying. And exciting?
@DavisB I'm an Atlanta native and have actually seen your car in passing a few times and I want to say I've seen it at the Mercedes tent at C&O a few years ago unless there's an identical one rolling around. I've always wanted one of these and remember trying to find one back in 2012 when they were about $7k. It's been in my Top 10 obtainable dream car list for ages now. Hopefully we'll be getting together later this week to finish the transaction. I'll be here at 5:00 battling with these friendly LA people. Good luck to everyone!
I always told myself if I were to buy another C126, it would be a Euro market car. And this one has my all time favorite wheels on it. Amazing spec.
@UI_Classics Do you know if the car has been converted to R134a or is still running on R12 refrigerant? You should be able to tell by looking at the schrader valves at the high/low fill points. I appreciate it -- thanks!
This is probably one of my favorite cars I've seen listed on The MB Market. Amazing spec.
It's funny seeing my dad's old car on here that we sold back in 2017. Story goes, I found this car for him on Auto Trader in 2013. We're Mercedes fanatics like everyone else here and were trying to find a W124 500E. But my dad was missing his 560SECs from years ago, so we added in a C124 to the short list of cars since it was basically a baby C126. We found this one and flew from Atlanta to Seattle to buy it. It had I think 64K miles on it, owned by a local architect and was beautifully garaged kept parked next to a red R230 Sport. The accident damage that is noted on the CarFax was, as Owner #3 told us, caused from a scratch in a parking lot -- it wasn't an accident. Since he was meticulous, he brought it to a Mercedes dealership and had them fix it with an open wallet. The repair is nearly impossible to spot. Happy with that, we bought it, shipped it back, and enjoyed it. German Auto Sales and Service did the work on the car as did us since we know these inside and out since it seems half our family are classic Mercedes technicians. All of our services should still be with the car. The car was garage kept until my dad sold it to my sister (owner 5 on the CarFax) since the A/C compressor went out on her W210 E320. I remember telling her to keep up with maintenance and wash it often. It only lived outside during those 10 months of ownership when she traded it in on a 2017 Jetta, a car that suited her lifestyle more than a classic Mercedes since I relentlessly hounded her to take care of it. Hope that helps fill in some history on the car. We loved it and took very good care of it. It's funny seeing it here on The MB Market. I'm almost tempted to bid on it since I know it's a good one...

EDIT: Air suspension video should be up tomorrow when we're near the car again.

Stuttgart_Steel said:

It was both a cosmetic and mechanical restoration. I am sourcing the service records for this car as we speak and will get them translated and posted in the gallery very soon.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 300SD
Stuttgart_Steel said:

Thank you!

To all interested parties, I was going through the pictures and a few photos of the front seats make the Designo leather look dirty.

@Jim_RosenthalThey feel so contemporary compared to everything else from that era. I've driven this one and it's tight as a drum. The road holding is incredible. The brakes grab high, steering is heavy and precise, and the road noise is pretty low.
