This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic (172) over Gray Leather (278) and is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. This R129 was sold new out of Oklahoma and shows subsequent registration in Missouri, Washington, and then Georgia. Equipment includes a body-color removable hardtop, a hydraulic-folding black soft top, power-adjustable seats with memory, power operated roll bar, headlight wipers, cruise control, and automatic climate control. Recent maintenance items addressed include new battery, A/C service, spark plug wires, coolant flush, timing chains, head gaskets, timing cover gasket, oil pan gasket, timing chain tensioner/guides, water pump, and valve cover gaskets. This R129 500SL now shows just under 96k miles and is offered on behalf of the seller in Marietta, Georgia with service records, a Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.
The exterior is finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic (172) and features a matching removable hardtop, an electric-folding black convertible soft top, headlight wipers, fog lights, fender vents, and a power antenna. The paint matched hardtop exhibits no headliner sag. The top hydraulics are inoperative and will need servicing by the next owner. The driver door shows some clear coat issues and the seller has added paint meter readings in the gallery. Detailed pictures are provided in the gallery showing every panel and body gap in detail. There is a small ding on the top of the hard top on the front passenger corner. The seller states there is some concrete that was kicked up and has hardened on the lower body cladding shown in both the video and gallery.
18” ATS GT3 Style Two-Piece wheels are painted gray with a polished lip and are mounted with Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus tires measuring 235/40 front and 275/35 rear with 2021 date codes. The car is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and automatic slip control (ASR). Brake fluid was last done in 2022 at 90k miles along with a power steering pump. Currently a power steering line has a leak. The provided driving video shows the suspension is tight and the alignment is straight.
The cabin features power-adjustable seats with memory upholstered in Gray leather (278) along with matching floor mats, carpets, and door panels. The upper dash is finished in black soft-touch plastic along with a black leather steering wheel. The center console and door cards are accented with burl wood trim that show in good condition with a light crack across the ashtray cover. Equipment includes power windows, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a Continental retro Bluetooth headunit. The air conditioning has been converted to R134 and operates as designed with a recent service in 2024 at 95k miles.
The black leather wrapped steering wheel frames instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and a digital thermometer along with auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, instant economy, and coolant temperature. The six-digit odometer shows just under 96k miles.
The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was factory rated at 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. Early R129s were fueled using Bosch CIS fuel injection which was carried over from the M117 and are widely regarded as the fastest year of the R129 produced. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed 722.3 automatic transmission. Maintenance performed during the owner’s 5-year tenure is as follows:
Detailed engine bay and underside pictures are included along with an underside walkaround/inspection by the seller.
The Carfax report indicates two accidents early in its life – one in 1997 and another in 1998. This R129 500SL now shows just under 96k miles and is offered on behalf of the seller in Marietta, Georgia with service records, a Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.
We love an early CIS powered R129. “AMG Light” is an accurate descriptor from the video as these engines are responsive, have immediate power, and carry an air of urgency on the road. While not as economical as later LH cars, this one makes a ton of power over all other M119/M113 cars. This Anthracite 500SL appears to have been very well taken care of having been maintained at Revolution Benz and DC Motorwerks here in the metro Atlanta area. No one knows SLs better than these guys. The underside appears to be in excellent condition. Paired with the newer Bilsteins seen at four corners, the 18” wheels with sticky tires, and all the engine work, the hard stuff is done. With a little bit of mechanical knowledge, the soft top rams are no big deal. This is an excellent candidate for daily driving duties and to pile miles on as the video suggests it drives excellently.

What a sweet MB for the greatest time of the year for a ‘vert.
Our photographer and video guy just got distracted while holding the phone, car cranks on first try.
@Moto_Escape Can you please confirm why you had to crank it twice in the video to start the engine? Sounded like it started on a high rev the first crank

@Swabian - Just spoke to our Storage & Social member (owner)and he shared that the top is in good shape and no cracks in the window when he put the hard top on back in June of this year
Is the soft top fabric in good shape? Any cracks in the plastic windows?

I got to spend the evening with this car doing the video and photoset and my reaction driving it is genuine. The wheel combo and the healthy engine and tight suspension made this a riot. It’s such a great driving R129.

Appreciate the bids so far on this great driving SL. It is safely stored at Moto Escape just north of Atlanta. This purpose built enthusiast facility ([email protected]) will safe guard the SL until transportation can be arranged for its new owner. If you have any questions in the final day of the auction, please let us know. We will be sad to see this one leave our social & storage club, but our member is ready for his next automotive purchase!

@Mecho69 - thanks for your interest in our members SL. The hose is either the low pressure hose, which is a pretty easy and inexpensive fix or if it is the high pressure hose it may be a few hundred dollars at an indy shop. On the concrete on the lower cladding, we have reached out to our detailer and would recommend a concrete dissolver and some elbow grease and most/all should come off.
@CraigSu I believe it's tied to the same hydraulic system that powers the soft top.
@Stuttgart_Steel I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of this. Since it wouldn't be a track car like the example you referenced I presume the factory automatic rollbar operates independently of the soft top's presence or absence. That would be rather important.
Hi @Moto_Escape, what would it take to get the concrete cleaned up and cost of fixing the power steering leak? Thanks and GLWS
@CraigSu I'm kind of into this idea actually. This would be the perfect car to do it to. The top weighs a ton and I did a quick google search and there's some threads with people asking the same thing. This guy did it to a dramatic extent: https://thembmarket.com/1999-mercedes-benz-sl500-10
Perhaps a sacrilegious question and better asked in the M-B forums but, how difficult would it be to delete the soft top and how much weight would be saved? I love the lines and the color combination here but have no interest in a convertible. Would I simply be better off looking for a C140 to stay with the same vintage and the M119 engine?
Additional service records have been added to the gallery.

I had a W126 AMG in this color many years ago. It is such a great color!
