This 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a North American-Market example that shows long-term family ownership since 1975. It was purchased by the father of the current owner in 1975 and gifted to the current owner in 2018. Finished in Light Beige (181) over Tobacco MB-Tex (103), power is provided by a 2.8-liter fuel-injected inline-six paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include a brown soft top, period-correct wire wheels, disc brakes, a lockable glove box, and a Becker Grand Prix radio. Records from 2020 are included with the car along with a workshop manual for the 280SL. Recent services include a new shift rod, battery cables, a throttle linkage adjustment, timing adjustment, brake flush, and steering box service. The odometer shows 4k miles with one rollover presumed. This 280SL “Pagoda” is offered by the selling dealer on behalf of the current owner with an additional set of OEM wheels and center caps, lambswool seat covers, a service manual, various W113 marketing materials, recent records, and a clean Georgia title.
The exterior is finished in Light Beige (181) with a contrasting Brown fabric soft top and original brightwork. According to the seller the car shows original paint and glass and a two-tone pinstripe accents the body lines. Exterior features include a driver-side door mirror, fixed beam headlights, chrome brightwork and a dual-exit exhaust. The body is rust free with minor rock chips shown on the nose of the car and the soft top components show light surface corrosion. Detailed photos of the exterior are included in the gallery.
While the original 14” steel wheels and paint-matched hubcaps are included, the car was fitted with wire wheels when purchased by the seller’s father in 1975. The wire wheels measure 14” in diameter and wear Michelin Defender tires measuring 195/70 at all four corners. Four-wheel disc brakes are fitted as standard. A full-size spare is fitted in the trunk along with the factory jack.
Tobacco MB-Tex (103) lines the dash, door panels and manually-adjustable seats which are fitted with inertia-reel three-point seatbelts. The paint-matched dashboard houses a VDO analog clock, a lockable glove box, controls for heating and ventilation, and a Becker Grand Prix radio. The cabin shows general wear indicative of the age of the car with a small crack on the driver seat present. The dashboard, veneer, and brightwork inside the cabin shows nicely with little wear noted. A set of aftermarket speakers have been fitted to the rear parcel shelf.
The two-spoke black steering wheel fronts a 140mph speedometer along with a 7k-rpm tachometer and a central multigauge with readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 4k miles with TMU noted.
This W113 Pagoda is powered by a 2.8-liter fuel-injected M130 inline-six which is rated for 168 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. Records from 2020 are included with the car along with a workshop manual for the 280SL. Recent services include a new shift rod, battery cables, a throttle linkage adjustment, timing adjustment, brake flush, and steering box service. The seller notes the car runs and operates but is in need of some refurbishment mechanically including: an injection rebuild, a new muffler, various oil leaks, suspension bushings, and a differential leak. Detailed photos of the underside are included.
