This 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300GD was originally sold new to the French Military before being imported to the United States and later purchased by its current owner in 2019. Finished in its original Green Camo paint over Black vinyl, power is provided by a 3.0-liter five-cylinder diesel engine sending power to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. Features include front and rear lockable differentials, fog lamps front and rear, a trailer hitch with a trailer plug socket, seatbelts for all four seats and a lockable glove compartment. The current owner had work performed to the interior including black vinyl upholstery, black carpets and Dynamat sound deadening. The truck will receive an oil change by the owner before the sale with the most recent oil change occurring 1k Km ago. Now showing just 43k kilometers (~27k miles), this 300GD is offered for sale by the current owner with the original import bill and a clean Florida title.
The exterior wears the original Green Camo finish and features fog lights front and rear along with a trailer hitch and trailer plug socket at the rear. A zinc coating as well as a fresh coat of black paint was recently applied to the frame under current ownership. The seller notes that some rust is present near the roof.
18” five-spoke alloy wheels from a later W463 are fitted and wear a satin black finish wrapped in Yokohama Geolander all-terrain tires measuring 265/60 on all four corners. A full-size spare is mounted to the rear door.
The cabin was reupholstered in Black vinyl which lines the seats, door panels and headliner. Matching black carpets have been fitted along with Dynamat sound deadening to reduce road noise. All four seats are fitted with seatbelts. Interior features include climate control with a front windshield defroster, lockable front and rear differentials, manual windows and a lockable glove compartment. Mounted on the center console is a manual hand brake, controls for the four-wheel drive system, the gearshift for the 5-speed manual transmission and two cup holders. The current owner had an AC system installed and notes that it is currently not functional.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 180 km/h speedometer along with gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Lights for the differential lockers can be found mounted in the center. The five-digit odometer currently reads 43k kilometers (~27k miles) with just 1k kilometers added by the current owner.
This G Wagen is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-five cylinder diesel engine which is factory rated at 87 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The car will receive an engine oil change before sale by the current owner with the most recent oil change being performed within the past 1k kilometers.
The invoices from the interior work are included by the seller along with photos of the old interior included in the photo gallery. Photos of the zinc coated and painted frame have been included as well. This 1980 300GD is now offered for sale in Miami, Florida with the original import bill and a clean Florida title in the owner’s LLC.
A video including a walk-around, cold start and driving demonstration has been included.
The G-Class is instantly recognizable from any angle and has played an important role in Mercedes-Benz history serving as far more than just a luxury SUV. Starting as a military vehicle, it was first sold to civilians in 1979 at the suggestion of the Shah of Iran. Their modern counterparts adorn the finest in modern luxuries from head to toe and for some, represent a departure from their utilitarian beginnings. Fitted with leather seats, manual windows and seatbelts, this 300GD offers only the essentials but retains all of its overlanding qualifications. Originally sold to the French Military, this example is a true embodiment of where the now legendary G-Class started, and by some standards, its purest form.

For those who asked about AC. Update on the AC; the system would need new evap, condenser, and blower to make it work. Whoever buys this can choose to upgrade the unit that is in the car or fully redo it with something else and use the OEM vents in the dash for a cleaner install. The car also just got the transfer case fluid swapped out as of yesterday when we shot the undercarriage.
Welcome to the closing day ladies and gentlemen! Should any of you have any further questions in regards to the car, please feel free to contact us. We've spoken to quite a few interested parties and we are looking forward to seeing this go to a new home!
Detailed photos of the undercarriage, frame and stampings have been added to the gallery. Thank you.
Happy hump day ladies and gentlemen! Pictures of the undercarriage of the car are being added shortly. All part numbers that I was able to reach were shot including the frame stampings. The car looks as solid underneath as it does on the exterior with no signs of leaks. We are currently diagnosing the AC and seeing what it needs exactly to be in working order.

Nice looking G. It has the later trapezoidal (not rounded) engine mounts so this would not be a 1980 frame unless the mounts were changed.

@kfine I’m going to reach out to G Mercedes once more to see if they can help clarify some questions since they’re the ones that brought it in and everything the owner has on the car records/info wise is what’s in the listing.
@rhoskins I’m going to take it to the shop to shoot underneath the vehicle to have some pictures for the auction. While there, I will ask to see what it is about the AC unit that isn’t working. It’s an aftermarket one that can be removed should someone wish to not have it in the cabin and redo the AC using factory vents.
Is just the body ex-French military? The vin plate is in the wrong spot. It should be in the holes above where it is. When a data card is pulled it lists Switzerland as the delivery location and paint code color 9001 (creme) with an upgraded trim option in brown (V22). The hood sticker reads 461. Is this a 461 body and engine on a 460 frame? Does the engine match the mileage on the body?
Hey there! I see it’s fitted with an A/C but it isn’t currently working. Do you have any information on why it’s not operational? Appreciate it, thanks!
FYI: its Manual transmission not Automatic! Cool!
@ajxk no the original steel wheels were corroded. Date codes on the tires are 2016 with healthy tread and not showing any signs of dry rotting.
Does the truck come with the original steel wheels?
Does it have a block heater? Can you give us the dates on the tires? Thx.
