This 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG 6.0 was reportedly modified in period by AMG Japan and is one of the earliest known examples with a 1989 build date. The car relocated to Canada in 2009 and was later imported into the United States in 2015. The original M119 V8 was increased in displacement to 6.0-liters by AMG and power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. Finished in Astral Silver (735) over a Anthracite Leather (271) interior, the car features a full AMG body kit, OZ Racing Aero III wheels, AMG exhaust, 300kph AMG gauge cluster, extended wood, floor mats, and painted trim. Additional features include a black folding soft top, a removable paint-matched hardtop, automatic climate control, rear kinder seats, and original Euro-spec lighting. Extensive maintenance has been performed since 2022 including rebuilt top hydraulics, front & rear brake pads and rotors, flex discs, power steering fluid, vacuum hoses, injectors, seals, fuel filter, kick down switch, motor mounts, transmission mount, spark plugs, and much more detailed below. Thorough receipts and documentation is included. Now with 101k kilometers (~63k miles), this premerger AMG is being offered by the seller in Illinois with a removable hardtop & stand, service records, wind deflector, one infrared keys, two valet keys, premerger AMG literature, original tool kit, and a clean Illinois title.
The body is finished Astral Silver (735) with matching lower body cladding and a full AMG body kit. The Gen 1 AMG kit consists of both front and rear bumpers, extended side skirts, and a 3-piece ducktail Heckspoiler. All parts are stamped with HWA AMG part numbers. Additional AMG touches include painted headlight and windshield wipers along with a paint-matched front grille. An authentic AMG exhaust is fitted and shows period correct AMG tips at the rear. The car benefits from a recent rebuild of all top hydraulic cylinders and operates with no issues. The seller notes the soft top is in good condition with the exception of the plastic windows which need to be replaced. The original hardtop is included along with matching stand. Minor rock chips are noted and the front bumper has been refinished in the last 2 years. Detailed photos are provided in the gallery highlighting any imperfections.
The M119 V8 was reportedly bored and stroked to increase displacement by AMG to 6.0-liters, resulting in a rating of approximately 375 horsepower. Inside the engine, the cam sprockets are engraved with "AMG" with photo evidence provided in the gallery. Additionally, the stroke was measured and confirmed to be a 6.0 at 95mm. An authentic AMG airbox sits atop the engine and premerger "AMG" labeled engine relays are also found under the hood. Extensive maintenance has been performed since the owners acquisition in 2022 as outlined below:
Detailed videos provided by the seller give an indepth look at the car.
Premerger AMGs have officially transcended into highly desireable collector pieces among automotive enthusiasts from all walks. The original W124 AMG 6.0 Hammers have been trading hands for over $1 million followed by C126 widebody cars which aren't far behind. As the market evolves and more people start to understand just how special these premerger cars really are, the same effect is now happening with the R129. It's believed approximately 50 or less of the early R129s were converted to 6.0L AMGs making them among the most rare models produced.
This example looks stunning in Astral Silver and has all of the right accoutrements from AMG including a fully stamped body kit, Aero III wheels by OZ, a Sebring AMG muffler with proper AMG tips, mono-painted wipers and grille, extended interior wood trim, and a 300kph gauge cluster. The extensive list of maintenance done to this R129 over the owner's prior two year ownership is impressive leaving little for its next caretaker to address. There's absolutely no secret where the future values for these cars is going. Just as we've seen with prior premerger 6.0 AMG's, the R129 is now following suite. Now is the time to buy, before they're too far into the six figures and further out of reach.

@Smcase22 Yes the AC works as intended .
Ok. Does the AC work properly?
@Smcase22 I am not by the car but the fender in my option is great, car tracks straight there has been no cause for concern regarding the fender.

@Youngclassicamg Do you have a paint meter? If so, could you check the passenger side fender? i could be wrong but the gap seems to be a bit inconsistent. Again, could just be the photos.
@Smcase22 I have not checked with a paint meter . The only thing that wasn't up to my standards was the front bumper which I had repainted. No signs of rust anywhere .
Have you checked the paint on this car with a meter? Do all panels seem to be original? Any sign of rust anywhere?
Such a neckbreaker , this is a piece of AMG history and a delight to see. Such a one of a kind , not your like general run of the line AMG. Looking forward to watching the bids flowing in and somone will definitely be happy with this in their stable.
Well talk about a find... al the goodies and verification of what is unmistakably AMG Japan all over. I am salivating.

@ammaraj24 it does not have an AMG Japan vin on the door. This was one of the very early conversion done so it is a possibility the vin plaque was introduced at a later time. Japanese builds all varied from what I have seen on many premergers and I think others can concur. You’re more than welcome to come see the car in person. Thank you
Can you please post a pic of the Amg Japan vin plaque in the drivers side door sill? I have a 91 500SL 6.0 AMG from Japan and I know for a fact it should have one there.
@gsxr Thank you ! I did not see any, I know some of the really early builds did not have any markings on the block.

Looks sharp! Any photos of the AMG stampings on the engine block? Might need a borescope to view as they may be located on the rear, on early engines like this.
