This M104 3.4-liter 24 valve gasoline inline-6 engine was originally built for a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300CE 3.4 AMG which spent time in Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and most recently the United States. The car was purchased by the previous owner from a known collector and the engine/transmission removed simultaneously in preparation for an engine swap. The auction includes the engine and transmission mated together along with the alternator, ancillary pumps, drive belts, and AMG M104 airbox. The engine and transmission are noted to be in good working order with video showing it turning over. Power steering fluid and engine oil have been drained. This M104 3.4-liter AMG engine is now offered on behalf of the seller out of Marietta, Georgia and includes a steel rig and particle box with lid for shipping and transportation, reducing packaging costs for the winning bidder.
This AMG 3.4L 24v M104 engine number reads 104980-12-035697 and is complete. These engines produced 268 horsepower and 243 foot-pounds of torque when new. The engine numbers are shown in the gallery. An AMG M104 airbox is installed and included in the sale. Two of the plastic rivets on the air box were damaged during shipping, but the airbox can be repaired with epoxy with no issue. Also included in the sale is the alternator, water pump, oil pump, A/C compressor, A/C lines, wires, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, and transmission mount.
The attached transmission is a 722.5 5-speed automatic. The .5 variant was produced for European Market examples in the C124 and, per the datacard, was originally paired to the engine and subsequent chassis. The transmission number reads 722501-03-764057 and a photo of the stamp is included in the gallery.
This engine and transmission pairing were removed from the car with 105k kilometers (~65k miles) shown on the odometer. The datacard indicated matching engine and transmission numbers along with the 957 AMG data code. They are offered for sale on behalf of the current owner out of Marietta, Georgia. Local pickup is an option as well as crate shipping with expenses paid by the buyer. A crate and steel engine rig are included which will drastically reduce cost of shipping.
The seller has included the following video showing the engine turn over by hand with good compression and includes a general walkaround:
Early M104 engines are an absolute treat compared to the later iterations which were a little benign in comparison. A 7,000 RPM redline and tons of power up top made it feel like a European BMW S50 motor. 957 option code was incredibly expensive to check off with a lot of that money going into the engine cost. With a modified bore/stroke of 91.5 mm × 84 mm and a crankshaft out of the W140 3.2-liter M104.990, these engines put out very good power. This engine sports low mileage and the 722.5 transmission itself is very valuable which was also used on the automatic R129 300SL. The seller shows no head gasket issues and the lower oil pan is dry. Included are new looking engine mounts and all of the ancillary items needed for A/C, power steering, electricity, etc. This is a very cool piece of AMG history that is ripe for any project of your dreams, be it a R129, C124, or handing it off to Matt Kwiek to stick in a much earlier Mercedes-Benz for a OEM+ Frankenstein build. It is all up to the imagination on this one and that’s exciting.

@gsxr Just going from experience I have had the same experience you talking about I was happy with thier service I used on on couple of my cars and I know other people that used them and were happy with them Your opinion is valid for you Good luck to the winner This is a great and reputable seller@Shark07747 - I missed your previous comment. EZL's cannot be repaired, refurbished, or remanufactured. Any place that claims this, is doing nothing but cleaning a used EZL and - hopefully - testing it in the appropriate vehicle/engine combination. RMT did nothing to repair 500E SLS shocks either, except clean them and lighten the wallet of the customer. Thanks @smcase22 that number sounds about right.Shipping to NJ should be around $500. Roughly. Crate and frame are built and ready to go.Is this an EZL forum? There a place in Florida the refurbishes EZL ITS CALLED RMT@Jeffreyis the EPC does not show an AMG-specific EZL for the 3.4L M104 engine.$2,550 bid placed by @Vlad600sel
How much is shipping to nj?@Jeffreyis It came off the car the engine was removed from. I'm assuming it's all software mapping and not physical changes hence no HWA numbers.Hmm that’s an AMG Ezl? I don’t see any HWA part number or AMG markings, is there something I don’t know here?Well the previous owner has the EZL and we will be including it with the sale of the engine! I’m really happy it turned up since that’s been the main point of contention. @Jeffreyis @DLL58 @YupididitA photo of the now-included 3.4-specific EZL has been added to the gallery.$2,500 bid placed by @Miiick

Okay sorry for the silence. Been talking to the owner of the engine and checking with a bunch of different experts in the sphere to get a concrete, real answer. Here's what I know and here's what I found out: Any EZL from a 3.0-liter M104 will let the engine run and the car will drive and operate BUT since these 3.4s had different mapping and tuning, it will not unlock its full potential. A 3.4-liter EZL is required to to make full power. The current owner of the car does not have the EZL. I went to the warehouse where it's stored today to double check and see the bit of harness where it plugs into the EZL, but there's no EZL. The previous owner said he sent it with the car, but we don't have it. Maybe it got lost in transit? Not sure. The ECU from the 3.4 is NOT required to run this engine from what I've been told. The EZL is the important part. While they're hard to find, I'm sure with enough brain power and research a 3.4 EZL can be found. I know enough people in the space to have us help look for one both here in the States and overseas where it most likely is. Had a conversation with a bidder today on the phone and he's also going to ask Pierre Hedary for his input as well. I'll post his findings here when I hear back. I hope that helps! An additional photo has been added to the gallery.Yes this engine sold back in May of this year, https://thembmarket.com/m104-amg-3-4-liter-engine-1 @smcase22 maybe you still have the ezl and ecu? And why wasn’t it used then?@Jeffreyis you are correct. This engine requires the correct EZL to run, at least properly. It Might run on a regular M104.980 EZL but will not realize it's full power if it does. If I'm not mistaken, this exact engine & transmission sold a few months back, I don't recall if this or a different site. If so, it legitimately came from a running AMG car undergoing a swap, and the EZL discussion took place during that auction too.@Yupididit sorry didn’t mean to flag comment, fat fingers. This is very constructive actually. From what I understand no you cannot use a standard m104.98 Ezl for this it will need the special AMG 3.4 ezl and ECU to work properly? Maybe someone with a little more expertise can chime in?@Stuttgart_Steel it’s A Ke Jetronic same as regular m104.98 engines HFM didn’t happen until later, after 1993 I believe.Did these required a specific EZL? Possibly the same EZL that the m104.980 and m104.981 required? Both of which are getting harder to find these days.I hope someone puts this in a 5 speed manual 190e. What a unique little ripper that would be.@Jeffreyis I'll get a better picture of the rivets uploaded in a few days. The air box took a hit in shipping and split the short snorkel, sheering the rivets. It's pretty minor damage. I asked the owner about the EZL prior to listing since I didn't see it and he said it never came with it.@Bimmerguy It's a 1992. I was wondering about this same thing since it's quite different looking than the later 3.2 engines. I'm inclined to say no, but that's just to be safe since that answer requires some more research. I'll look into it.Also does this include the specific ignition module (ezl) for this engine?Sorry little confused about the plastic rivets that were mentioned as damaged on the airbox, are they pictured here?$1,250 bid placed by @EncierroSS
What year is this motor from? Wondering if it is KE Jet fuel system compatible or rather the later HFM from 93’ onwards?Hey everyone! I love hosting parts on here as much as cars and this is a very special combination of parts. Early M104 3.4 liter engine from AMG. It's a pretty self explanatory auction as I took a lot of pictures and did a quick video of it turning over by hand. These are hard to find as is the 722.5 transmission. If you have any questions, let me know. All of the stuff to ship it (crate and stand) are included, so that saves a ton on shipping costs if someone needs to have it shipped. Thank you and let me know if I can help in any other way!$1,000 bid placed by @Youngclassicamg
