This M104 3.4-liter 24 valve gasoline inline-6 engine was originally built for a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300CE 3.4 AMG which spent time in Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and most recently the United States. The car was purchased by the previous owner from a known collector and the engine/transmission removed simultaneously in preparation for an engine swap. The auction includes the engine and transmission mated together along with the alternator, ancillary pumps, drive belts, and AMG M104 airbox. The engine and transmission are noted to be in good working order with video showing it turning over. Power steering fluid and engine oil have been drained. This M104 3.4-liter AMG engine is now offered on behalf of the seller out of Marietta, Georgia and includes a steel rig and particle box with lid for shipping and transportation, reducing packaging costs for the winning bidder.
This AMG 3.4L 24v M104 engine number reads 104980-12-035697 and is complete. These engines produced 268 horsepower and 243 foot-pounds of torque when new. The engine numbers are shown in the gallery. An AMG M104 airbox is installed and included in the sale. Two of the plastic rivets on the air box were damaged during shipping, but the airbox can be repaired with epoxy with no issue. Also included in the sale is the alternator, water pump, oil pump, A/C compressor, A/C lines, wires, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, and transmission mount.
The attached transmission is a 722.5 5-speed automatic. The .5 variant was produced for European Market examples in the C124 and, per the datacard, was originally paired to the engine and subsequent chassis. The transmission number reads 722501-03-764057 and a photo of the stamp is included in the gallery.
This engine and transmission pairing were removed from the car with 105k kilometers (~65k miles) shown on the odometer. The datacard indicated matching engine and transmission numbers along with the 957 AMG data code. They are offered for sale on behalf of the current owner out of Marietta, Georgia. Local pickup is an option as well as crate shipping with expenses paid by the buyer. A crate and steel engine rig are included which will drastically reduce cost of shipping.
The seller has included the following video showing the engine turn over by hand with good compression and includes a general walkaround:
Early M104 engines are an absolute treat compared to the later iterations which were a little benign in comparison. A 7,000 RPM redline and tons of power up top made it feel like a European BMW S50 motor. 957 option code was incredibly expensive to check off with a lot of that money going into the engine cost. With a modified bore/stroke of 91.5 mm × 84 mm and a crankshaft out of the W140 3.2-liter M104.990, these engines put out very good power. This engine sports low mileage and the 722.5 transmission itself is very valuable which was also used on the automatic R129 300SL. The seller shows no head gasket issues and the lower oil pan is dry. Included are new looking engine mounts and all of the ancillary items needed for A/C, power steering, electricity, etc. This is a very cool piece of AMG history that is ripe for any project of your dreams, be it a R129, C124, or handing it off to Matt Kwiek to stick in a much earlier Mercedes-Benz for a OEM+ Frankenstein build. It is all up to the imagination on this one and that’s exciting.

Hey everyone! I love hosting parts on here as much as cars and this is a very special combination of parts. Early M104 3.4 liter engine from AMG. It's a pretty self explanatory auction as I took a lot of pictures and did a quick video of it turning over by hand. These are hard to find as is the 722.5 transmission. If you have any questions, let me know. All of the stuff to ship it (crate and stand) are included, so that saves a ton on shipping costs if someone needs to have it shipped. Thank you and let me know if I can help in any other way!$1,000 bid placed by @Youngclassicamg
