This 1996 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG was sold new in California in January 1996 and remained there until 2006 when it moved to Florida where it currently resides. Finished in Imperial Red (582) over a Black/Anthracite (201) Leather interior, power comes from a 3.6-liter M104 AMG straight six paired to a custom swapped five speed manual transmission. This C36 is one of 338 units shipped for the North American market in 1996 and one of 1018 total C36’s in the market. Features include an electric tilt/slide sunroof, a ski bag pass through between the rear seat and trunk, an electric sunroof, and heated front seats. This C36 AMG currently shows 177,919 miles on the odometer and is offered with manufacturer's literature, two original keys, thorough maintenance records documenting the dogleg manual transmission swap, and a clean Florida title.
This W202 is finished in Imperial Red (582) and features AMG-specific ground effects including bumpers, side skirts, and AMG exhaust. Additional exterior features include a headlight wiper delete, a power sunroof, and factory smoked tailights. The OEM hood ornament has been deleted and replaced with a Mercedes-Benz flat badge and a close up shot of a dent on the hood has been provided by the seller. Other blemishes noted includes chips on the front bumper and a touched up chip on the front right fender. Aftermarket clear corner lights have been added to the front of the car and the roof has been wrapped in gloss black vinyl.
The 18” staggered AMG Monoblock wheels feature a painted face and polished lip and measure 18x8 up front and 18x9 in the rear. The wheels wear Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 tires measuring 225/35 and 255/35 respectively. The AMG-specific brakes behind the wheels have been painted red.
The cabin is trimmed in Black/Anthracite (201) Leather across the seats, door cards, head rests, shift knob, and steering wheel. All leather surfaces are reported to be original and nicely kept. The steering wheel retains original Black leather accented with silver lower leather while the stock C36 AMG shift knob has been replaced as a result of the transmission swap. The shift knob currently mounted shows a standard shift pattern while the swap is a dogleg. Due to the rarity of the dogleg knob, the owner has had a difficult time sourcing a proper knob in the desired condition. Original C36 AMG embroidered floor mats remain in the cabin and are included in the sale. The center console, door cards, cup holder, and upper dashboard are accented with Burl Walnut veneers. Features include power adjustable mirrors, power adjustable and heated front seats, automatic climate control, and an aftermarket Pioneer head unit. All weather W202 floor mats will be included in the sale as well.
The digital odometer shows 177,919 original miles. Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer with a 6,800k-rpm redline, and a digital odometer with trip function. Additional gauges include fuel level and coolant temperature. The gauges are trimmed with AMG-specific grey housing and AMG text screened onto the speedometer.
The 3.6-liter M104 inline six was rated at 276 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque when new and is paired with a Getrag 717.450 dogleg 5-speed manual transmission. A complete set of receipts are included in the sale outlining service and maintenance on the C36 since 2006 when the car had 95k miles on the odometer. The swap was performed in Novemebr of 2019 and includes an upgraded dual-mass flywheel sourced from Rennsport in the UK, new shifter bushings, and fresh fluid. The seller notes both the pilot and release bearings are new and maintain a tight shift action with no play in the movement. In order to make this swap function properly, the driveshaft was lengthened. The car has been lowered on H&R Sport springs with Koni Yellow shocks. All services are up to date including fluids.
This C36 AMG is offered with manufacturer's literature, two original keys, thorough maintenance records documenting the transmission swap, and a clean Florida title.

@charlieger Head gasket was replaced at 138,861 miles. I do not have any documentation on the wiring harness.
@benzer I have only the receipts for the parts installed.

I would also be interested in any history on head gasket service and wiring harness repairs. Thanks
Any history of the head gasket failing or being replaced? And any documented history of the wiring harness being repaired? I understand those are two pretty well documented weak points on these C36's. Any info is helpful!
@1man1engine just to follow up on J4177's question, are there any actual invoices/work orders/pictures documenting the transmission swap or just receipts from the parts?
@J4177 The swap was completed November 3rd 2019, the car had 163,xxx miles on the odometer at the time of completion, the trans is from a euro spec 300ce-24 m104 980 engine, 717.450 getrag dogleg. The same trans used in the r129 SL300 in the US. There are other transmissions that will work but wanted to be sure I sourced a trans that I would not have to replace because of weakness. The flywheel is dual mass, both the trans and the flywheel were sourced from rennsport factory in the UK. Shifter bushings, both pilot and release bearings are new so there is no slop in the shifter, transmission fluid was also replaced at the time of the swap. Unfortunate I was unable to source the oem dogleg shift knob and boot which is rare so the shift pattern on the knob does not indicate it’s a dogleg. The driveshaft had to be lengthen and the car was down for about a year because I wanted the swap done right. The swap was not done by me but by a friend of mine that’s a well accomplished tech and has worked on all of my cars.
Gorgeous car. Which pictures show the “thorough maintenance records documenting the transmission swap”? I assume the receipts are in chronological order but the invoices skip from October 2019 to 2020. I see parts receipts but no labor invoice. Was the swap performed by the owner? Thanks

Unfortunately the car was purchased with the dent in the hood. I have not attempted to fix it.

@1man1engine thank you for the reply. Do you know what caused the dent on the hood and have you made any attempt/inquiry to fix it?
@mji1984 It is so much more enjoyable. My biggest concern was swapping the wrong transmission. I initially purchased slk 717.460 trans only to find out the M104 has too much torque. Doglegs aren’t readily available in the US so had to source the transmission from the UK.
@benzer No accidents recorded on the car. The paint is in good condition and absolutely no rust. The car has spent all of its life in the wormer parts of the U.S.
@Jeb105 The trans is from a 300CE, 717.450. This transmission was also available in the R129 300SL. 1 of 2 gtrag transmissions available from Mercedes at the time.
What kind of transmission was put in the car during the swap?
Quite a lot of paint correction on this car (and some needed) but otherwise all body panels appear to match. Hopefully no accidents!

I bet this is a hoot to drive. Used to have a dogleg 16v and it was so much fun despite being painfully slow. I imagine the 3.6 is considerably quicker.

Very very nice. I picked up a imperial red a couple months back with 95k miles. And then 2 days later a complete c230k for the 6 speed manual to be swapped into the c36. Can't wait to see what this goes for.
