Alt767Gelt bid $30,000
Such an interesting car. I have memories of riding in my mom's as a very young child (1973 450SEL). One of the issues these cars had was the sunroof air disruption auditory discomfort at certain speeds. This example seems to have a tasteful aftermarket remedy installed. My SLC has the same engine and I can tell you that if this example has had the good fortune of having spent its life under the care of owners who maintained it as it appears to have had based on the description, the next owner will enjoy decades of reliable power as these engines truly are the equivalent gasser to the venerable OM616 diesel. While it is hard to beat the bamboo interior found on the W116, this red interior is pretty cool. Question: Was the shift on the column an option at some point for cars destined for the USA? I've only seen a few examples (online, never in person) on the W116. Interesting. Good luck with the auction. Someone is going to be very happy with a wonderful S-class next week.
Had I not just purchased the last 126 in this same color combo (1985 500SEL) on the MB Market, I'd be bidding here. The dash and woodwork tell the story of a car that has not been left out in the sun. Look at that instrument cluster! One of the reasons I'm a fan of the first generation of 126 (81-85 in USA) is the leather interior and seat stitching. This example gives you that classic style/feel while also offering the updates that pay dividends down the road (ex: wheel size that actually allows you to purchase replacement tires by brands such as Continental/Michelin/Dunlop etc and a more fuel efficient V8). For the purist out there; you can purchase the period correct Becker (and while you are at it have updated on the back end to BlueTooth) radio which I feel would make this car fit in at a concourse event or MB club section get together. Heck, I'm tempted to bid on it anyway. Good luck to all involved.
Rare 126 here. Great combination of engine and long wheelbase. Best of luck to the bidders out there.
